Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. This tower is 634 meters tall and can be found in the capital city of Japan. In fact, it is called the ______ Skytree. What city name goes in the blank?

Answer: Tokyo

The Tokyo Skytree was completed in 2010, becoming the tallest tower in Japan and in the world (beating out the 600-meter-tall Canton Tower, which you will meet later in the quiz). As tall as it is, though, the Burj Khalifa (a building, not a tower) in Dubai in the United Arab Emirates is still taller (829.8 meters).

The Skytree was designed by architect Nikken Sekkei.
2. The 435-meter-tall Milad Tower is also known as the Tehran Tower. In which Middle Eastern country can it be found?

Answer: Iran

Designed by Mohammad Reza HAFEZI, the Milad Tower (named after the birthday of the Lord of the Time Imam Mehdi) was completed in 2007 and was the fourth tallest free-standing telecommunication tower in the world at the time. It was also the tallest structure in southwest Asia at that time. Since then, it has slipped down the ranks of both of those lists.
3. The CN Tower (the CN stands for Canadian National) stands 553 meters tall, and can be found in Canada's biggest city. What is its name?

Answer: Toronto

Originally, the 'CN' in the CN Tower referred to the CN Rail Company that built it, but since then they sold it to the Canada Lands Company. Now, the 'Canadian National' title is a little more all-encompassing of Canada and Canadians.

Designed by John Andrews, Webb Zerafa, and Menkes Housden, the CN Tower was completed in 1976, at the time becoming the world's tallest free-standing structure and world's tallest tower, titles which it held until 2009.
4. The Ostankino Tower stands 540 meters tall and is named for the Ostankino district of Moscow. In which country can it be found?

Answer: Russia

The Ostankino Tower was designed by Nikolai Nikitin and was completed in 1967. When it was built it became the tallest free-standing structure in the world (until the CN Tower was completed in 1976).
5. Called the Sky Tower, this 328-meter-tall tower can be found in the city of Auckland, on the North Island of this Southern Hemisphere country. Which one?

Answer: New Zealand

The Sky Tower was finished in 1997, becoming the tallest man-made structure in the Southern Hemisphere. It was designed by Gordon Moller of Craig Craig Moller, Ltd.

If you haven't seen it in person, you may have seen it during the 13th season of "The Amazing Race" (US) or in the 1st season of "The Amazing Race Asia".
6. The Stratosphere Tower is 350 meters tall and is one of the highlights of this southwestern U.S. city known for its casinos. Which city?

Answer: Las Vegas

When it was opened in 1996, the Stratosphere Tower was the tallest freestanding observation tower in the U.S., and the second tallest in the Western Hemisphere (after Canada's CN Tower). Originally planned to be built with a height of 553 meters, there were worries that it would interfere with flight paths into McCarran International Airport. Multiple architects were involved in the various planning stages that the tower went through.
7. The 600-meter-tall Canton Tower, also known as the Guangzhou Tower, can be found in which populous Asian country?

Answer: China

The Canton Tower in Guangzhou became the tallest tower in the world when it was completed in 2009, but it did not hold the title long. In 2010, the Tokyo Skytree took the honor away from China. And then, in 2013, it could no longer even claim being the tallest building in China, when the Shanghai Tower (a skyscraper) was completed.

The Canton Tower was designed by Information Based Architecture and Arup.
8. The Riga Radio and TV Tower is 368 meters tall, and is the tallest tower in Africa.

Answer: False

Riga is the capital of Latvia, one of the Baltic states in Northeastern Europe. The Riga Radio and TV Tower was completed in 1989 while Latvia was still a part of the Soviet Union. It was designed by architects Kims Nikuradze, Nikolajs Sergijevskis, and Viktors Savčenko.
9. It was going to be called the Kuwait Telecommunications Tower, but then the Gulf War happened. Afterwards, they decided to name this 372-meter-tall tower the Liberation Tower instead.

Answer: True

Construction on the tower began before the 1990 Iraqi invasion of Kuwait, and was already half built when hostilities began. After being liberated, the tower was completed (in 1996), and it was appropriately named the Liberation Tower.

It does not have the honour of being the tallest man-made structure in Kuwait, however. That distinction goes to the 412-meter-tall Al Hamra Tower (skyscraper).
10. At 324 meters tall, the Eiffel Tower is the smallest tower in the quiz, but it held the record as the tallest man-made structure in the world for 41 years! Where is it located?

Answer: Paris, France

The Eiffel Tower was designed by Alexandre Gustave Eiffel and erected in 1889 in time for the World's Fair. When it was built, it took the world record as the tallest man-made structure away from the Washington Monument, and held that record until the Chrysler Building was completed in New York City in 1930.
