Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Casey is a book-smart girl who decides to forego an academic career in favor of pursuing figure skating. Which film is this?

Answer: Ice Princess (2005)

Casey Carlyle was played by Michelle Trachtenberg in this film about pursuing your dreams. Originally, Casey's interest in figure skating, despite it once being a childhood hobby, is purely academic. In order to qualify for a Harvard scholarship she must present a project on physics... and after watching a figure skating competition she decides to do her project on skating. As she trains and develops, though, she decides instead to stick with figure skating... but will her decision ruin her life and relationships in the process?

"Ice Princess" also featured the talents of Joan Cusack (as Casey's mother) and Kim Catrall (as Casey's coach).
2. Lynn-Holly Johnson starred as Lexie Winston in this film about a girl who achieves success as a figure skater, only to see her dreams dashed when an accident leaves her blind. What is the name of this stirring film about overcoming adversity?

Answer: Ice Castles (1978)

This story is not only about overcoming adversity, but also about redemption. The character of Lexie Winston manages to make it big in the competitive field of figure skating on hard work a large amount of natural talent, but in the process she alienates her family and friends. It is only after her accident that she mends those fences, while also finding a way to continue striving for her dream of being a championship skater.

The original 1978 film was remade in 2010 with Taylor Firth in the starring role.
3. The Templars of Mithra control nearly all the water in the galaxy in this comic film that stars Robert Urich as the charismatic Jason and Mary Crosby as Princess Karina, along with John Carradine as the villainous Supreme Commander. Which film?

Answer: The Ice Pirates (1984)

With water such a rare commodity in the galaxy, it has an extremely high value. Ships are targeted for their cargoes of ice, and pirate leader Jason (Robert Urich) and his crew board a Templar ship to raid its shipment. When they also find a beautiful princess (Mary Crosby) in stasis, they also decide to kidnap her.

Jason and his crew get caught up in something bigger than pirating when the princess hires them to find her father, who went missing while searching for a 'lost' planet rich with water.

"The Ice Pirates" was written by Stewart Raffill and "Krull" (1983) author Stanford Sherman.
4. After a satellite crashes in the Arctic, Soviet and American forces race to be the first to recover a capsule that contains photographs of the locations of all the missile silos on both sides. What Cold War film is this, starring Rock Hudson, Patrick McGoohan, Jim Brown and Ernest Borgnine?

Answer: Ice Station Zebra (1968)

In the film, the 'Ice Station Zebra' of the title is a reference to a British civilian scientific weather station with the full title of 'Drift Ice Station Zebra' (it moves with the ice floe). After the capsule lands in the Arctic, Commander James Ferraday (Rock Hudson) of the submarine USS Tigerfish is tasked to rescue personnel from said weather station. In reality, his mission is a cover for the attempt to retrieve the capsule. As part of his mission, Cmdr Ferraday takes a few 'guests' on board: a British Intelligence agent (Patrick McGoohan), a troop of Marines with combat vet leader (Jim Brown), and a Russion defector (Ernest Borgnine). Tensions rise as the race for the recovery of the capsule turns lethal.

The movie is (loosely) based on the 1963 novel of the same name by Alistair MacLean. It was adapted for film by MacLean, along with Douglas Heyes, Harry Julian Fink, and W. R. Burnett.
5. John Cusack and Billy Bob Thornton play two thieves who steal from their mob boss, only to find that the roads are too icy to make their getaway. Which comedic film is this?

Answer: The Ice Harvest (2005)

"The Ice Harvest" is based on the novel of the same name by Scott Phillips and makes for a fun mix of comedy and film noir. Directed by Harold Ramis (of "Ghostbusters" fame), the movie is filled with a humorous collection of betrayals and booze, and murders and mishaps. John Cusack plays mob lawyer Charlie Arglist, while Billy Bob Thornton is his partner in crime (and pornographer) Vic Cavanaugh. Also appearing in the film are Connie Nielsen, Randy Quaid and Oliver Platt.
6. Sid the Sloth is abducted by a ferocious beast and must be rescued by his friends. Which installment of the "Ice Age" movies does this describe?

Answer: Ice Age: Dawn of the Dinosaurs (2009)

"Ice Age: Dawn of the Dinosaurs" is the third installment of the franchise, and it brings back the original cast from "Ice Age" and the additions from "Ice Age: The Meltdown" as they face a new threat - one they believed extinct!

With Manny and Ellie (voiced by Ray Romano and Queen Latifah) expecting a little mammoth, Sid the Sloth (voiced by John Leguizamo) feels the need to prove his parental instincts. Unfortunately, he finds three dinosaur eggs to be a parent to, complete with angry T-Rex mother. After Mom-Rex takes back her babies (and Sid, too), his friend mount a rescue to a hidden land of gigantic dinosaurs (below the ice).
7. Dominic Purcell is part of a team of scientists that discover three frozen bodies in the Canadian Arctic. All hell breaks loose when they wake up. What 'B' movie is this?

Answer: Ice Soldiers (2013)

"Ice Soldiers" has a decent cast in Dominic Purcell (of "Prison Break" fame) as the scientist Malraux, Michael Ironside as Colonel Trump, and Adam Beach as TC Cardinal, a local aboriginal.
The three bodies that are discovered are three Russian super-soldiers, engineered during the Cold War and deployed during the Cuban Missile Crisis (1962). Their plane crashes in the Arctic, and they wreak havoc to a military outpost before ending up as three popsicles. And what do you suppose happens when they are reawakened 50 years later?
8. Young Alice is drawn from her middle-class life in Donegal, Ireland into the underground racing world of the local bad boys. Which film is this?

Answer: Black Ice (2013)

The danger and rebelliousness of it all is the draw for Alice Watters (played by Jane McGrath), and despite the warnings of her brother Tom (Dermot Murphy), she gets deeper and deeper. Maybe the allure of scarred bad boy Jimmy Devlin (Killian Scott) had something to do with it, too. But, getting drawn into criminal activities has consequenses...

McGrath was nominated for Best Actress at the Irish Film and Television Awards (2014) for her performance.
9. Leslie Brooks plays Claire, a woman tired of working as a society reporter for a living and bent on marrying her way into wealth, whatever it takes. What film noir flick is this?

Answer: Blonde Ice (1948)

The character of Claire Cummings Hanneman was well-acted by Leslie Brooks. Based on the 1938 novel "Once Too Often" by Whitman Chambers, the film was described by movie critic Gary Johnson as "a deliciously nasty and audacious exposé on the twisted psyche of a truly lethal femme fatale."

After marrying into money, Claire's husband becomes suspicious of her relationship with co-worker (and 'former' lover) Les Burns (Robert Paige). He leaves her in the middle of their honeymoon and returns to Los Angeles, where he is found murdered the next day. Upon being questioned, Claire points the finger at Burns, but soon afterwards, the pilot (Blackie Talon, was played by Russ Vincent) that flew her to L.A. after her husband left tries to blackmail her. How do you suppose she handled that? Is anyone safe from Claire's machinations?
10. When a huge alien spaceship attacks the military academy on Jupiter's moon Io, the survivors flee to nearby research vessel Magellan. Suddenly, a spatial phenomenon flings them billions of light years away. Which movie is this?

Answer: Ice Planet (2001)

The Magellan research vessel was actually constructed after a mysterious crystal was found on Earth that had alien code embedded within it. The code gave instructions on the building of an advanced spaceship (the Magellan) and vague warnings of a dire threat to Earth (the huge alien attackers).

When the ship is mysteriously sent to another part of the universe, it is guided down to an ice planet, where further mysteries await them as to the identity of their alien benefactors and what they want.

The captain of the Magellan, Commander Trager, was played by Wes Studi.

This movie was made as a pilot for a proposed television series that never made it to the airways.
