This is an introduction to the Moomin family. Moominmamma tells us about her family and home. The language (as in the entire book) is very odd.

The hat had very interesting powers - it transformed objects when placed in it. When Moomin and Snufkin put it in the river and turn the water to raspberry juice, the fish accidentally swim inside.

" 'I'm not a canary!' peeped the nearest bird. 'I'm a roach!' 'We are respectable fishes, all three!' His friend twittered."

The Hattifatteners meet on their island each year - coincidentally on the day when the Moomins and friends visit.

"Once a year the Hattifatteners collect there before setting out again on their endless foraging expedition round the world."

The Snorkmaiden found her and showed Moomin because she wanted to impress him, but her plan backfired when he fell in love with it.

"Her cheeks and lips were red, and her round blue eyes smiled up through the clear water; she had blue hair, too, flowing in long painted curls over her shoulders."

The Snork accuses the Snorkmaiden of not understanding fishing because she is a girl - and then she comes up with the bait that finally catches it!

"At last he said: 'Of course if the Marmeluke eats pancake, then...' And everyone knew that the hunt would go on."

A trial is held to see who is the rightful owner of the suitcase and it's contents - Thingumy and Bob or the Groke.

" 'I wish to be their prosecutor,' said Sniff (who hadn't forgotten that they had called him a silly old mouse)."

They hid it in the same bush as the suitcase. Then they returned it saying they found it, and Moominmamma throws a party for the whole valley.

" 'I can't bear to see her so miserable,' said Thingumy. 'I suppose we must bake it tack' said Bob with a sigh. 'Pot a wity! It was so nice to sleep in the pittle lockets.' "

The whole valley is very afraid of the Hobgoblin to begin with, but then they realise that he is not too scary, he just wants his ruby.

"While the Hobgoblin was eating they edged a little nearer. Someone who eats pancakes and jam can't be so awfully dangerous. You can talk to him."

The Snorkmaiden wishes that her eyes were as big and beautiful as the figurehead's so that Moomintroll will think she is pretty. However they just make her look odd and she has wasted her wish asking for them, so her brother has to sacrifice his.

" 'Oh, all right!' said The Snork at last. 'You shall have them for the sake of the family. But I hope you're a little less vain in future' "
