This is a wonderful story about a mischievous, but brave boy named Tom Sawyer growing up in Missouri before the American Civil War. This heartwarming, but also very sad story was written by Anna Sewell. "Black Beauty" is the storyteller. Which story is mine?

Answer: The Wolves of Willoughby Chase

"The Wolves of Willoughby Chase" takes place in 19th century England. The title is a little misleading, because the hungry wolves are only featured in the first few chapters. Mainly, it is a suspenseful, fast moving and hard to put down book that tells the story of two cousins who are sent to an orphanage by an evil and mean governess. They escape and make a long, difficult journey back home. Bonnie's parents return home and the wrongdoers are caught and punished.
This book was written by Joan Aiken and published in 1963. It was also made into a film in 1989.

Answer: Lassie Come Home

A family in England is forced to sell their beloved collie, Lassie, to pay their bills during the depression in the 1930s. The son, Joe Carraclough, is heartbroken to lose his constant companion, Lassie, who would walk all the way to town everyday to meet him when school was out. Lassie is sold three times, but always escapes and finds her way home. Finally she is sold and taken far away to Scotland.

But the daughter of the wealthy duke who buys her, knows that Lassie is unhappy and homesick and allows her to escape. Lassie travels almost one thousand miles to return home.

Her journey takes her through rough terrain, bad weather, dog catchers and other perils. However, she also meets a number of kind people who treat her well and nurse her back to health, which enables her to complete her journey home to Joe.

When she arrives home, the Carracloughs are so amazed and happy to see her, they vow never to sell her again, no matter how bad times are.
9. My name is John Ridd. A clan of outlaws kill my father. One day, by accident, I meet the granddaughter of the lord of the clan. She is betrothed to the lord's heir, but I fall hopelessly in love with her. This is the story of our secret courtship, and my fight to save the girl I love from the evil gang of outlaws and take her for my wife.

Answer: Lorna Doone

This is the story of John Ridd, a farmer's son whose father is murdered by the fearsome Doone clan. While walking one afternoon, John accidentally finds a secret place on the Doone's land and there discovers Lorna, who is only eight years old at the time. In the years following John meets Lorna at the secret place and they fall in love. But she is destined to marry Carver Doone and fears for her and John's life if she disobeys. John finally steals her away and takes her home to live with his family. Sometime later, it is found out that Lorna was kidnapped by the Doones as a baby and she is actually the daughter of Lord Dugal. She is taken to London and she and John are parted, until he performs a heroic act against the Doones that earns him a knighthood. He and Lorna are then allowed to marry, but Carver Doone appears in the church and shoots Lorna. John takes after him and kills him. He returns home heartbroken, sure that Lorna is dead, but she pulls through and the story ends with the promise of happiness for both of them.

Richard Doddrige Blackmore wrote "Lorna Doone". It was published in 1869 and has become one of the most popular romances of all time.
10. A few of you may have read my story. My real name is Melanie, but my grandparents gave me a better nickname. I'm a rebellious young girl, who hates wearing dresses and being "ladylike". The year is about 1715 and while I am travelling on a ship to England, we are captured by pirates. I decide to join them! This is when I meet Anne Bonney and Mary Read. What is my nickname and the name of the book?

Answer: Jade

This is my favorite book of all. Written by Sally Watson, "Jade" tells the story of a young girl in 18th century Virginia, who hates the rules that go with being a lady. Being too hard to handle for her aunt and uncle, she is put on a ship bound for England, where she is to live with yet another set of relatives.

She finds out that the ship is carrying slaves, so hating slavery, she frees them. She is caught and sentenced to be flogged, but a gang of pirates capture the ship and Jade decides that she would rather be a pirate than a lady. So Jade joins the ranks of Calico Jack Rackham, Anne Bonney and Mary Read.

The story follows history through to the actual capture of the pirates, the hanging of Calico Jack, the death of Mary Read and the disappearance of Anne Bonney.
