Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Paul has $40. He spent $11 on a magazine, and then spent $3 on a pack of pencils. How much does he have now?

Answer: $26

You can work this out by adding $11 and $3 ($14) and then subtracting it from $40. And there's what Paul has now!
2. If you share $15 among 20 people equally, how much does each person get?

Answer: $0.75

One way to work this out is to convert $15 into 1500 cents and then divide it by twenty.
3. If I had a $50 note and spent $23.61 on a book, how much change would I get?

Answer: $26.39

You can work this by first subtracting $23 from $50 ($27). Then you subtract $0.61 from it. And there's your answer!
4. $10.98 was to be shared among 9 children equally. How much does each child get?

Answer: $1.22

The problem is a division: 10.98 divided by 9 is 1.22.
5. $286.80 is to be shared among 20 people equally. How much does each person get?

Answer: $14.34

When dividing a number by 20, all you have to do is move the decimal point one digit to the left, and then halve it. So if you move the decimal point one digit to the left from $286.80, the answer is $28.68. And if you halve that number, you will get $14.34.
6. Jason has $41,235. If he wants to buy a car that costs $50,000, how much more money does he need?

Answer: $8765

This is a subtraction problem: 50000 minus 41235 is 8765. Jason needs $8765 more.
7. Joe has $3.50. Emily has twice as much money as Joe. Sam has 5 times as much money than Emily. Julia has half of what Sam has. How much money does Julia have?

Answer: $17.50

If Emily has twice as much as $3.50, she must have $7.00 (3.5 x 2 = 7). If Sam has 5 times more than Emily, he has $35.00 (7 x 5 = 35). And if Julia has half of Sam, she must have $17.50 (35/2 = 17.5).
8. Sam has $200. He spent $28. What percentage (%) of his money did he spend?

Answer: 14%

You can convert this into a fraction (28/200). Percentages are out of 100 so we need to make the denominator 100 by halving it (you have to do the same to the numerator). And there's your answer!
9. Johnny had $8 pocket money. He spent $3.45 on eggs and $3.55 on a comic. How much money does he have left?

Answer: $1.00

$0.45 and $0.55 make up $1. $3 and $3 make up $6. You add the numbers and then subtract it from $8, which means Johnny has $1 pocket money remaining.
10. $1800 was to be shared between Joseph and his brother. Joseph was to get twice as much money as his brother. How much does Joseph get?

Answer: $1200

When Joseph gets 2 parts of $1800 and his brother gets 1 part of it, there is a total of 3 parts. If you divide $1800 by 3, you will get $600, which is 1 part. If Joseph gets 2 parts, you have to double $600 (1 part) which gives you $1200.
