1. What was the name of the meeting in which Winston Churchill, Franklin Roosevelt, and Joseph Stalin met to discuss the war?

Answer: Yalta Conference

The three leaders met three times during the war to discuss it. This was the second time they had met. They were mostly trying to establish an agenda for governing post war Germany.
2. Who was the fictional character that became the symbol of the working woman in U.S. during the time of the war?

Answer: Rosie the Riveter

The women were needed to work in the factories since about 16 million U.S. citizens went to war. This character was designed by Norman Rockwell.
3. Who designed the M1-Garand rifle?

Answer: John C. Garand

The M1-Garand was designed between 1923-1924 by John C. Garand. Approximately 5.3 million of these rifles came off the assembly line. It was the only rifle issued in large numbers to infantry soldiers.
4. What was one of the aims of Operation: Market Garden?

Answer: To secure bridges

This operation was not very successful as the Allies lost many men. Many paratroopers were involved in this operation. The result was a German victory.
5. What was the alliance of Germany, Japan and Italy (for a time) referred to as?

Answer: Axis

There was more than just those three countries in the alliance but I just named the three major ones. The Axis was defeated on September 2nd, 1945 when Japan officially surrendered.
6. What were the German submarines called?

Answer: U-boats

The U-boat was very effective in destroying merchant vessels and even battleships. Though when depth charges were added to most battleships and the allies cracked the German's radio code, being in a U-boat was one of the most dangerous places to be.
7. What was the codename for the D-Day landings?

Answer: Operation Overlord

These landings were very successful and the allies established a beachhead on Normandy. Now the allies could move through France in an attempt to get to the German capital of Berlin.
8. When did Japan sign the document to surrender, officially ending the war?

Answer: September, 1945

After Japan signed the document it officially ended the Second World War. Germany had surrendered on May 8th, 1945.
9. What was the name of the project to build the atomic weapons?

Answer: Manhattan Project

During the Manhattan Project the United States successfully developed the atomic bombs that they dropped on Hiroshima and Nagasaki bringing the war in the Pacific to an end. If they hadn't done that it might have forced an invasion of the mainland of Japan but that would have killed many more American soldiers.
10. When is V-E Day celebrated in the West?

Answer: May 8th

V-E Day is celebrated for victory in Europe, marking the date when Germany surrendered in 1945. The Soviet Union celebrates it on May 9th, mostly because of the time difference.
