Answer: September 1, 1939

Before Hitler attacked Poland, he had signed a document stating that he would not invade any other countries after his invasion of Czechoslovakia. He broke his promise which led Britain and France to declare war on Germany. This move is what started World War II.
2. Who did Hitler blame for Germany's loss during World War I?

Answer: Jews

When Germany lost World War I, Hitler was furious. He blamed the Jews for the loss so that he could rise to power. Once he got that power, he started rounding up the Jews and throwing them into concentration camps. This started what we now know as the Holocaust.
3. Which country's forces attacked the United States on December 7, 1941?

Answer: Japan

The United States didn't want anything to do with World War II. That all changed on December 7, 1941 when the Japanese attacked Pearl Harbor, Hawaii. Over 2,300 people died at Pearl Harbor. The next day, President Roosevelt asked Congress to declare a state of war.
4. What was the name of the biggest and the worst concentration camp?

Answer: Auschwitz

Auschwitz was a death camp. Many people were sent here and died either by the gas chambers, typhus, malnutrition or by working too much. This was a cruel thing to do. Auschwitz is still standing today. You can walk through the camp and see what the prisoners went through.
5. In what month did the US invade Guadalcanal?

Answer: August

The United States was determind to take Guadalcanal back from the Japanese. Guadalcanal would open the American campaign to force the Japanese back from their gains in the Pacific. In the end of the Battle for Guadalcanal, the victory belonged to the Americans.

Answer: Anne

While the Franks were in hiding, Anne decided to write down all of her emotions, feelings, and all of the stuff that was happening to her. After the Franks were captured, Anne was sent to Bergen-Belsen and died of typhus. Her diary was later found by her dad and is the most popular diary to emerge from the Holocaust.
7. What was the symbol of the Nazis?

Answer: A Swastika

The swastika was adopted by Hitler after he rose to power in Germany. Before he adopted the symbol, the swastika meant peace. But just as soon as he made it the Nazi symbol, the swastika meant fear and hatred against anybody Hitler thought were 'inferior'.
8. When did the US marines land on Iwo Jima?

Answer: February 1945

The Americans knew Iwo Jima woud be hard to take. They spent two months before the invasion softening up the defenses with near-continuous strikes. The pitiless warfare on Iwo Jima would make the battle famous and the marines who fought it heroes. The death toll was 5,93l Americans dead and 23,000 Japanese dead.
9. Approximately how many people died when the USA dropped the atomic bomb in Hiroshima?

Answer: 140,000

Japan just wasn't surrendering so after Roosevelt died, President Harry Truman decided to drop atomic bombs on Hiroshima and Nagasaki. This killed not only Japanese people, but it also killed forced laborers from Korea and more than 100 American POWs, thus ending World War II in the Pacific.
10. What battleship memorial can you visit today at Pearl Harbor?

Answer: USS Arizona

The Arizona was hit by a bomb which blew up its ammunition magazine. The attack took the lives of over 1,000 of its sailors. Today a memorial is in place so we can remember the lives that were lost on the Arizona.
