Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. If you place a piece of pumice (a type of rock) on top of some water will it sink or float?

Answer: It will float!

You might have thought that pumice would sink like most other rocks. Pumice is made in volcanoes. But, the way it is formed means that it is full of holes; because of this, it floats in water.
2. Does vinegar run (pour) faster than maple syrup, or is it the same all the way around?

Answer: Vinegar runs a lot faster.

Vinegar runs a lot faster than maple syrup. This is due to a property called viscosity, which is a measure of how liquids flow. Liquids with a high viscosity, like maple syrup, do not run very quickly. Vinegar has a lower viscosity, so it runs faster.
3. What kind of insect has spots and can fly?

Answer: A ladybug

A ladybug is a very colourful and spotted insect. It flies all the time to avoid predators.
4. If you put the North Pole to the South Pole of a magnet, what will happen?

Answer: They will stick together.

North and South are opposites. Therefore, they will stick together, because opposites attract!
5. Which of the following items can conduct electricity?

Answer: a piece of iron

Metals, like iron, can conduct electricity. The structure of metals is such that the electrical current can move through them. Substances such as styrofoam and wood cannot conduct electricity.
6. What affects how much cargo a boat can hold: which of the answers will allow for maximum floating?

Answer: The arrangement of the cargo evenly.

If you were to be stuck on thin ice or a little boat, you should lie down. This is because it arranges your weight (cargo) evenly, which minimises the possibility of the ice breaking.
7. In which place will the temperature be the highest?

Answer: the oven on high

You should never hide in the oven, even when it's off because if someone turns it on it will get really hot.
8. Which of the following colours can bees not see?

Answer: red

For some reason, red is a difficult colour for a bee's brain to focus on and see.
9. What happens when you heat sugar?

Answer: It gets bubbly and melts.

With help of a parent you can heat sugar and watch it melt. Sugar can burn if it is heated to a hot enough temperature. If you do it for a correct amount of time, it makes caramel. Be careful, though!
10. What happens when you mix vinegar and baking soda?

Answer: It can make a mini explosion.

Because vinegar is an acid, when you mix it with enough baking soda (a type of base), it explodes. Ask a parent for help and try this outside.
