Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Here I am on an abandoned desert island somewhere in the Pacific. Check out my Fun Trivia "Survivor" teammates - They've all got suspiciously false names. Look at Angelica Animals. I heard she's from Ecuador. She won't hesitate if she finds a Cavia porcellus or two to eat. She might therefore have an advantage. What is the common name for Cavia porcellus?

Answer: Guinea Pig

It seems abhorrent, that Guinea Pigs (not related to pigs nor from Guinea either - they are from the Andes), are domesticated animals bred for food in South America. They appear to be a domesticated variant of the Brazilian Guinea Pig (C. aperea), a longer and thinner version of the rodents which are found wild in the foothills of the Andes and have no known predators. The Guinea Pig was brought to Europe by traders in the 1500s. Their docile nature and easy-to-care-for routine, along with their size, made them ideal pets. The term "Guinea Pig" when someone is put forward to test something new, comes from their ideal characteristics as research animals.

Llamas, from the Andes region of South America, are bred as pack animals, for their wool, and also for their meat.

Wild boar (Sus scrofa) is the ancestor of the domesticated pig (Sus domesticus). The wild boar probably originated in Southeast Asia around Indonesia and the Philippines. It was domesticated over 10 000 years ago. It is still a source of meat in the Pacific but its propensity to harbour parasites make its meat consumption unsafe relative to domestic animal consumption.

The Black Rat (Rattus rattus), probably originated in South-East Asia or India. It is widespread around the world. In the Pacific traditional cultures of the Hawaiians and the Polynesians, rat was an everyday food for the common people but royalty was not allowed to eat same.
2. Look at that girl over there, her so-called name is Sally Celebrity; she is carrying on like a rock star. She looks like Katy Perry to me. But then Katy Perry is not Ms Perry's real name either. What is Katy Perry's real name?

Answer: Katheryn Elizabeth Hudson

Katheryn Elizabeth Hudson was born in 1984 and originally sang gospel music. She released an album, "Katy Hudson" in 2001. This was not commercially successful. She moved to Los Angeles the following year and changed her name to Katy Perry to avoid confusion with Goldie Hawn's daughter, Kate Hudson. Success did not come quickly but in 2008 with the release of her second album, a pop/rock record called "One of the Boys", she had two hit singles, "I Kissed a Girl" and "Hot n Cold". She never looked back.

Florian Cloud de Bounevialle Armstrong is the real name of Dido.

Shania Twain's real name is Eileen Regina Edwards.

If you knew Katy Perry's real name you might be a little young to know that Mary Isobel Catherine O'Brien was Dusty Springfield's real name.
3. OMG, that person over there cannot be real. Eliot Entertainment indeed: bragging about winning an Oscar, a Grammy, an Emmy and a Tony. That can't be right. There is only a handful who have actually achieved this. Who "won" their "EGOT" in 2002?

Answer: Whoopi Goldberg

An EGOT is an acronym for an "imaginary" award by a person who has won all four major annual American entertainment awards in a competitive, individual category such as the Emmy (television), Grammy (audio recording), Oscar (film), and Tony (theatre). The rules are strict: Honorary awards and group awards do not count.

Whoopi Goldberg was the tenth person to win when she was awarded a Tony in 2002 for Best Producer in "Thoroughly Modern Millie". Also in 2002 she won a daytime Emmy for Outstanding Special Class Series "Beyond Tara: The Extraordinary Life of Hattie McDaniel" when she was the host. She earned Golden Globes for Best Actress in 1986 for "The Color Purple", and Best Supporting Actress in 1991 for "Ghost". She won the 1991 Oscar for Best Supporting Actress in "Ghost". In 1985 she was awarded a Grammy Award for Best Comedy Recording for "Whoopi Goldberg: Direct from Broadway."

Al Pacino (2004) and Jessica Lange (2016) have both achieved the Triple Crown in Acting ("won a competitive Academy Award, Emmy Award and Tony Award in the acting categories" - that is, no Grammy, so to speak).
Hugh Jackman won a Tony for "The Boy from Oz" in 2004, and an Emmy and Grammy for "Les Miserables" in 2012, and was nominated for an Oscar in the same movie.
4. Jessica Geography looks to be a smart cookie. Her Geo knowledge could be useful in a game like "Survivor". I wonder if she will share information. I found a Survivor game clue which states that if I go to the only narrow strip of land with sea on either side, forming a link between two larger areas of land on the island, I will be rewarded. What is the geographical term for this land feature?

Answer: Isthmus

An isthmus is a narrow strip of land that connects two larger masses of land and separates two bodies of water. Perhaps the two most famous isthmuses in the world are Panama connecting North and South America, and Suez which separates the Mediterranean Sea from the Red Sea. Both these places are famous as they have canals connecting the two bodies of water. Seattle in Washington is also located on an isthmus between Puget Sound and Lake Washington.

An estuary is an area of a lower river valley, mouth or delta influenced by tides.

A peninsula a piece of land almost surrounded by water or projecting out into a body of water.

A headland is a narrow piece of land that projects from a coastline into the sea. A cape is a larger headland that changes the coastline.
5. What a show pony. Horace History is telling anyone who will listen that he's a history professor at the University of Sydney. He says this island looks like Yap and is therefore part of the Federated States of Micronesia and as such, we are still on Australian soil. Is this factual information?

Answer: No, The Federated States of Micronesia are an independent country

The archipelago of Micronesia covers 607 islands spread over a million square miles in the Pacific Ocean. The archipelago belonged to the Spanish, then Germany in 1899 and Japan after WWI. A huge battle took place at Truk in WWII (Operation Hailstone) and afterwards, the island group was run by the United States under United Nations oversight in 1947 as a component of the Trust Territory of the Pacific Islands, becoming a becoming a sovereign state after independence was achieved on November 3, 1986.

Yap is not an island but one of the four federated states of Micronesia (as represented by one of the four stars on its national flag) Yap is the most westerly state and comprises about ten main islands.
6. Harry Hobbies is a big guy. He's pretty quiet but he's actually a mate of mine from Australia called Spit. Spit will find food anywhere, including on a deserted tropical island: Wildflowers, crustaceans, frogs you name it. Which one of the following edible foodstuffs is the MOST poisonous?

Answer: Fugu (puffer fish)

Fugu or Puffer fish, also known as blowfish, is a delicacy in Japan. However there is some risk that if the fish is not prepared correctly there may be a residual poison left. This poison a tetrodoxin which causes muscle paralysis including respiratory muscles and is deadly when consumed - there is no antidote. Deaths in Japan from fugu are rare but not unknown.

In Korea, Sannakji octopus has the potential to choke the consumer. The octopus is served fresh immediately after killing the animal. The tentacles are still moving. There are reports that the tentacles and suction cups can wrap around the necks of diners and choke them to death. While this is an exaggeration, the cut tentacles are moving and have knocked many a pair of spectacles off their owner's face.

Tapioca is made from cassava root. If the cassava is not properly prepared, cyanide consumption is possible. Just don't eat it raw. (Apple seeds and bitter almond contain the same chemical)

Rhubarb is a family desert favourite but only eat the stems! The leaves contain oxalic acid, a compound found in bleach, cleaning products and anti-rust products.
7. Hannah Humanities is telling Sally Celebrity that "Survivor" is a metaphor for "mixed". She explains that when you put a group of strangers together, from all races and cultures in a isolated system, you understand why "Survivor" is so popular. Which of the following words is not a synonym for "Mixed"?

Answer: Separate

"Mixed" is a very versatile word. It has a variety of meanings. One could say "Mixed " is a mixed word!
The range of meanings can be classified in to three broad groups:
1) Consisting of different types or qualities. e.g. blended, diverse
2) Consisting of different types of the same thing. e.g. impure, hybrid
3) Consisting of a mixture of both positive and negative outcomes or elements.
e.g. contradictory, uncertain

Separate as an adjective means forming a unit on its own or discretely. You could say it also means "unmixed".
8. Cynthia Sci-Tech seems a smart cookie. She has already made a fire, now she telling everyone how to find water. What does she tell people she needs to obtain drinking water?

Answer: A plastic sheet and a container to capture water

Dig a small hole 40 cm deep and place the container in the bottom. Take the plastic sheet, weight with a small rock in the centre to form an inverted cone. Place directly over the container and then anchor the edges of the sheet around the upper rim of the hole with the soil you dug out of the hole. Overnight you will have enough water for about half of one person's requirements. A piece of tubing leading down to the container is useful as you do not disturb the humid environment you have created. This is not essential but your water yield will not be optimal without it.

Boiling water is recommended when your water is not fresh but it's not going to help you if it is not freshwater: Boiled seawater still is saltwater.

A portable desalination plant is an oxymoronic term.

Quinine tablets do keep malaria away. Actually drinking Gin and Tonic was recommended for British officers posted to tropical regions as tonic water contains quinine. However tonic water contains 15mg/L so you would need to drink 67 G&Ts a day to get a therapeutic dose of 1000mg or 1 g!

A better option would be to drink a glass of a mixture of Cinchona bark and alcohol (made by soaking brandy or gin for a few days). Taken twice a day it would have provided at least 1-2g quinine per day.
9. Sebastian Sports is such a jock. He's telling everyone he plays for the NFL. Assuming that bird on his shirt is the nickname of his team, which city is Sebastian LEAST LIKELY to be from?

Answer: New York City

The United States have more birds for nicknames of major sporting teams than perhaps any other country: Baltimore has two, Ravens (NFL) and the Orioles (MLB); as does Atlanta with the Hawks (NBA) and the Falcons (NFL); the Eagles (NFL) belong to Philadelphia.

New York City has more major sporting teams within its metropolitan area than any US City with eight: New York Giants and Jets (NFL); New York Yankees and New York Mets (MLB); New York Knicks and Brooklyn Nets (NBA); New York Rangers and New York Islanders (NHL). One could argue the the New Jersey Devils (NHL) also come under this umbrella. Nevertheless, eight or nine teams with no bird for a nickname.

None of the MLS (Soccer) teams, including the two from NYC, have birds for nicknames.
10. Tommy Television is saying he has watched every episode of "Survivor" (He must be really old). He says that "Survivor" is the granddaddy of all reality TV shows. Which one of the following debuted in the United States first?

Answer: Survivor

Reality television is hard to define, but supposedly it relies on putting a disparate group (mixed, if you will) of non-professional actors together and observing the interactions (supposedly unscripted) that unfold. This, then makes it different from a documentary as emphasis is on the drama to unfold rather than on educating viewers. The genre has the potential to be exploitative as "clever" editing can be made to make a person look better or worse than they are in real life. Also the off-camera work can change situations to provoke certain group members and/or their reaction. Some may think that "Survivor" and "Big Brother" (itself, based on a book ['1984'] that demonstrated human exploitation) were early versions of reality TV but in fact, "Candid Camera" (commenced 1948), "You Asked for It" (1950-1959) and the "Seven Up" series (commenced 1964) all fit the definition.

However it was in the late 90s when the genre took off: "Survivor" commenced in the US in 2000 as did "Big Brother", both based on earlier, similar European franchises. These two were probably seen as the "early" examples of the genre as both shows went to extremes by limiting almost all external interaction of contestants by either filming in remote locations ("Survivor") or closed up in a house [full of cameras] ("Big Brother").

"The Amazing Race" followed in 2001. This show won every Emmy between 2003-2009 for "Outstanding Reality-Competition Program", possibly as emphasis was on racing teams of two people who had to complete local tasks that were typical of the country they were racing in. Little airtime was given to the drama that unfolded between contestants and between other teams.

"American Idol" premiered in 2002 and is probably the prototype for all singing reality shows.

"The Apprentice" was a series-long job interview commencing in 2004, conducted by Donald Trump before he won the 2016 Presidential election.
