Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. You can generally find scales on snakes, that is a trait they have. They also go through a process where they shed their scales when they outgrow the skin melded to them. What is the scientific name for the shedding/moulting of scales?

Answer: Ecdysis

A walk through the wilderness may unveil evidence of a snake having gone through ecdysis if you find a snake skin lying on the ground. Ecdysis also describes the shedding or moulting process that some insects and arthropods go through as well.
2. In music, scales are sets of musical notes that have fundamental orders. There are many scales that have been developed in history, but there is a musical scale that is entirely made of semitones (half notes), using every pitch within an octave. What is the name of this particular scale?

Answer: Chromatic scale

There are twelve different pitches in a standard chromatic scale, the equivalent of playing every note on a piano octave. Melodic major scale is the one that is demonstrated in "The Sound of Music", during the song "Do Re Mi". The other two are harder to describe and understand without a music degree, and are not often used in traditional music. Those are just two of many experimental scales, and some even involve tuning an octave so it has more than twelve notes. Those take some serious getting used to when heard.
3. There are several varieties of scales on fish, based on the shape and stylings that the species of fish have evolved into. Bony fish have usually one of three types of scales while sharks and other cartilaginous fish have one specific type. Which of the scale types below are shark scales?

Answer: Placoid scales

Placoid scales are also found on skates and rays, and deep sea chimeras. As for the others listed, cycloid scales are associated with salmon and carp, ctenoid scales are found in perch, bass and swordfish, and ganoid scales are found on sturgeon, gars and bowfin varieties. Fish scales have evolved over time for their purpose to be more than skin; they serve as reflectors or coloration for either camouflage or breeding purposes. Eels are one of few fish that do not have scales.
4. A British actress took the last name Scales professionally but kept her unique first name. She appeared in movies such as "Howard's End", and was nominated for a BAFTA award for her portrayal of Queen Elizabeth II in "A Question of Attributes". But she is best known for her role as Sybil Fawlty in the classic British sitcom "Fawlty Towers". What is her full moniker?

Answer: Prunella Scales

Prunella Margaret Rumney Illingworth changed her name and began her acting career in the 1950s. She is married to actor Timothy West. Her career has been very diverse, never really doing much mainstream work but always having something to do.
5. Scales also dominate 1/12 of the astrological cycle, as it is one of the twelve signs. Which sign is it?

Answer: Libra

Libra represents the astrological period between September 22 to October 23. The term Libra is Latin for "scales" or "balance". The constellation on which Libra is based sort of resembles what a house would look like if built on a steep hill (one wall longer than the other) and then the hillside went completely vertical.
6. A term in architecture is scale ratio, defined as the ratio between the actual size of an object and the dimensions drawn of it. For example, if a drawing of the FULL length of an American football field was two feet long, what would be the scale ratio of the drawing?

Answer: 1:180

The full length of a football field in American football is 120 yards (100 yards for play area and ten yards for each end zone) or 360 feet. So 2 feet to 360 feet, or 1:180.
7. Scales on a mammal are very rare, but there is a species that lives in Asia and Africa that has distinct scales. They resemble an anteater fully engulfed in chain mail armor. What is the collective species called?

Answer: Pangolin

Pangolins are sadly very endangered. There are eight varieties that are all on some form of the endangered species list. Pangolin illegal trafficking is rampant; they are one of the most trafficked animals in existence. Pangolins are nocturnal animals, and are generally insectivores.
8. Spring scales are the most commonly used devices for measuring the weight of things. The earliest documented design for a spring scale date back to a "seasoned" scientist in 1770. What was the name of this scientist?

Answer: Richard Salter

In Bilston, England, Richard Salter's early methods of making spring scales eliminated the need to go to the steel yard to weigh something. His business is still working today, as Salter Housewares. Spring scales are affected by changes in temperature and alterations in the gravitational field and altitude. This is why balance scales are used much more in science.
9. Limescale is a substance often found around hot water boilers and central water heating systems. As limescale is a layman's term developed over the years, it has replaced the actual scientific name of the substance. What is the primary compound that limescale is composed of?

Answer: Calcium Carbonate

Calcium Carbonate, or CaCO3, is also the component in eggshells and pearls. Limescale is commonly formed when hard water is heated in boilers or heating systems, where the water has evaporated and the hard water deposits have remained.
10. Balance scales are associated with Lady Justice, the personification of the judicial system. She holds the scales to weigh the strengths of a case's support and opposition. Lady Justice also holds an item in her other hand that doesn't hold the scales. What item is that?

Answer: Sword

The sword is the symbol that justice can be swift and final. Justitia is the Roman Goddess of Justice and is who Lady Justice is taken from. Previously to Justitia, the goddess Isis from Egyptian mythology also was shown holding scales. Lady Justice also wears a blindfold to show impartiality.
