Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. At 14.10 on 5 December 1945, five TBM Avengers comprising Flight 19 left Fort Lauderdale, FL and disappeared in this area.

Answer: Bermuda Triangle

A legendary triangle of Ocean lies between three places in the Atlantic Ocean. The places are Bermuda, Puerto Rico and the United States (Fort Lauderdale). Ships, people and aeroplanes have been reported mysteriously disappearing off the face of the earth whilst traveling inside this triangle.

It soon acquired the name 'Devil's Triangle' owing to superstitions that the devil was at play on this stretch of ocean and gobbling up weary and lost travelers with great delight, but what actually was at play inside this triangle of rough water, is it really the devil, or perhaps aliens are using this spot as their home base on earth? Maybe it really does contain a mystical vortex that sucks people down into a third dimension.
2. This is the name commonly given to the small aliens with large heads, large dark eyes and little or no hair.

Answer: Greys

Among the mysteries of modern UFOlogy is the origin of the entities know as the Greys. These small beings are the most commonly observed entities reported by abductees aboard extraterrestrial craft, and are believed to be the ones most responsible for human abductions.

There are many things that we do know about the Greys, derived mostly from abductee reports, but there is far more that we do not yet know or understand.
3. Begun on December 30, 1947 and lasting only 15 months, this project, later to become Project Grudge, was the first official attempt by the military to investigate the UFO phenomena.

Answer: SIGN

In the late 1940s, the Air Force Office of Intelligence Requirements (AFOIR) began the process of investigating reports of unidentified flying objects from the public. The division within the AFOIR was known as the Collections Office (AFOIR-CO) and was headed by Colonel Robert Taylor, III.

This division would assemble the reports and prepare them for the AFOIR. As reports were gathered at the AFOIR-CO in the capacity of an interim project, personnel within the Pentagon began calling the project, 'Project Saucer'.

This name would later be used to identify press releases by the Air Force. Even though Project Saucer was only an interim in-house project by the AFOIR, the term, 'Project Saucer', would be used by the public throughout the late 1940's and well into the early 1950s. What was not known at this time was the fact that Project Saucer would evolve three more times, spanning just over 17 years.

Its first genesis came to be an official secret investigation that would be code-named: Project SIGN. By 1949 Project SIGN's code name would change to Project GRUDGE and in 1952, it would become known as the infamous Project BLUEBOOK, which it would keep until its demise at the recommendations of the University of Colorado's Condon Report in 1969.

This was the same year that the United States Air Force 'officially' absolved itself of the UFO phenomenon investigations. But in the beginning history pointed in a different direction. The project would shed its interim status and become OFFICIAL and very SECRET.
4. On September 19, 1961 this couple from Portsmouth, New Hampshire claimed to be abducted by aliens while traveling home from a vacation in Canada on US Route 3 near the village of Lancaster. They claimed an object hovered over their car and then they heard a sound like a tuning fork which caused them to fall asleep. When they awoke, they were in Ashland, nearly two hours away.

Answer: Betty and Barney Hill

Betty and Barney Hill were returning from a vacation in Montreal, driving through the White Mountains of New Hampshire, in the vicinity of Cannon Mountain, when they observed a bright moving light in the sky. Initially dismissed as an aircraft or satellite, the couple noticed the light appearing to become brighter and get closer.

They drove on, and as they passed Cannon Mountain they observed that the object seemed to be moving with them and still getting closer. Barney stopped the car and got out, and as he did so, the object swung in a silent arc across the road at an estimated distance of 100 feet. Barney ran back to the car and they drove away, with Barney in near hysteria.

The object seemed to have disappeared, but when they looked out the window, the stars above seemed blocked by darkness.

Then the Hills heard a strange electronic-sounding beeping that vibrated the car with an irregular rhythm. Ten days after the sighting, Betty began to have vivid dreams and nightmares for five days.

In those dreams, which she wrote down, she experienced their car being stopped by the occupants of the object, and her and Barney being taken on board the object, where they were subjected to a medical examination.
5. On June 30th, 1908, something exploded here, 8 km above the ground and destroying nearly everything for about 2,150 square kilometers. It is still unknown what that something was.

Answer: Tunguska

The explosions were heard in the early morning hours of June 30, 1908. It was a drama that has occurred countless times in Earth's history, and that is sure to play again. Those Tungus tribesmen and Russian fur traders who happened to glance into the southeastern Siberian sky that fateful morning must have been startled to see a fireball streaking through the atmosphere toward their trading post of Vanavara and leaving a trail of light some 800 kilometers long.

The object, whatever its nature, was approaching from an azimuth of 115 degrees and descending at an entry angle of 30 to 35 degrees above the horizon.

Their gaze followed the bright fireball as it continued along a northwestward trajectory until it seemed about to disappear over the horizon.

Then it shattered in a rapid series of cataclysmic explosions lasting about half a second over a distance of 15 to 20 kilometers.
6. The name given to the objects sighted by military pilots during the Second World War.

Answer: Foo Fighters

The famous Foo Fighters of World War II were bright balls of light, about a foot in diameter, of different colors, that appeared mostly over Germany to both German and Allied pilots. Although the Foo Fighters could maneuver around and through bomber formations with apparent ease, they were nuisances rather than physical threats. Most of the Foo Fighter reports made by Americans came from the 415th Night Fighter Squadron. If the Foo Fighters were a natural phenomenon, one would expect at least a few modern reports from the thousands of commercial and military aircraft in the skies.
7. On June 24, 1947 this Idaho businessman observed nine shiny objects weaving in and out of the Cascade Mountain Range near Mt. Rainier in the State of Washington.

Answer: Kenneth Arnold

Arnold was in a single-engine Cessna searching for a missing military transport plane when he noticed the objects flying in and out of formation about 3pm. He clocked them as they moved between Mount Rainier and Mount Adams and estimated their speed at 1,200 mph.

The objects appeared to fly almost as if fastened together - if one dipped, the others did, too. He described the objects as each as big as a DC-4 passenger plane, 'flat like a pie pan,' and so shiny that they reflected the sun like a mirror. People have reported seeing mysterious objects in the sky for hundreds of years.

But it wasn't until this case in the Pacific Northwest, that 'flying saucers' began to make headline news.
8. Located near Groom Lake, Nevada this secret military installation is believed to be home to actual alien aircraft.

Answer: Area 51

The Groom Lake facility has been known by many names since its construction. Kelly Johnson named the place 'Paradise Ranch'. When his flight test team arrived in July 1955, they simply called it 'The Ranch'. In fact, the secret base was formally named Watertown Strip, after the town in upstate New York where CIA director Allen Dulles was born.

In June 1958, it was officially designated Area 51 by the Atomic Energy Commission (AEC). The adjacent AEC proving grounds became known as the Nevada Test Site and divided into such numbered areas.

The base is now known worldwide as 'Area 51' (thanks to numerous mentions in Hollywood shows and movies), though officially this designation was dropped in the 1970s.
9. On November 5, 1975 this logger was supposedly abducted by a UFO while his friends watched. His story is the basis for the movie 'Fire In The Sky'.

Answer: Travis Walton

On November 5, 1975 a group of loggers in the mountains of northeastern Arizona observed a strange, unusually bright light in the sky. One of those men, Travis Walton, recklessly left the safety of their truck to take a closer look at the large UFO it turned out to be. Suddenly, as he walked toward the it, Walton was blasted back by a bolt of mysterious energy.

His companions fled in fear. When they reported an encounter with a UFO - something they would have considered impossible if they had not witnessed it themselves - the men were suspected of murder. For five days authorities mounted a massive manhunt in search of Walton - or his body.

Then Walton reappeared, disoriented and initially unable to tell the whole story of his terrifying encounter.
10. In July of 1947, a UFO crashed near this town in New Mexico. According to reports, the bodies of several aliens were found near the ship. The Army reported to have a 'flying disc' in its possession and later changed its story claiming it was just a weather balloon.

Answer: Roswell

One of the most famous stories in 'UFO history' is that in 1947 an alien craft crashed in the New Mexico desert near Roswell and that civilians arriving at the scene witnessed dead and injured alien bodies. When the military arrived they captured the craft and aliens and initiated a massive cover-up.
