Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In 1949, an automobile company introduced the model Eighty Eight, and it remained in production for over fifty years, ending in 1999. Often matched with sub-names, including Royale and Delta, which auto manufacturer made the Eighty Eight?

Answer: Oldsmobile

Oldsmobile Eighty Eight was their most popular model for twenty five years. The high performance V8 engine used early on makes some people consider the Eighty Eight the first muscle car.
2. One of the most common references to the number 88 is the number of keys on a standard piano. The keys are separated between black and white, but how many of the 88 keys are white keys?

Answer: 52

52 white keys interspersed with 36 black keys create the musical instrument invented in 1700 by Bartolomo Christofori. There are seven full octaves of 12 notes apiece, with an extra C note on top and three notes on the bottom to make 88.
3. One of our planets in our Solar System orbits the Sun in 87.97 Earth days, rounded up in scientific circles to 88. Which of these planets has an 88-day orbit?

Answer: Mercury

Mercury orbits the Sun in less than half the time as any other planet. But its day lasts 58 days, so relative to its orbit, a Mercurial year lasts only about 1.5 days. Mercury is rarely visible from the Earth due to its proximity to the Sun.
4. The mystery thriller motion picture "88 Minutes" was released in Europe in 2007 and in America in 2008. It involved forensic psychiatrist Dr. Jack Gramm getting threatened with murder on the phone, with the doctor hearing he had "88 minutes to live". Who played the forensic psychiatrist lead role in "88 Minutes"?

Answer: Al Pacino

Sadly, Al Pacino and the rest of the talented cast were almost across the board given low ratings for this movie, mainly due to its contrived plotline. In fact, Pacino received a Razzie nomination for WORST actor, something he in his career was not used to being associated with.
5. Marie Curie would be proud to tell you what the 88th element on the Periodic Table is, had she not DIED from her research on it. What element is it?

Answer: Radium

Curie in her extensive studies of radioactivity also discovered Element 84 on the Periodic Chart, Polonium. Her research on radioactivity earned her second Nobel Prize for Chemistry in 1911; her first was earned eight years earlier in the field of Physics. She died from acute anemia from overexposure to radiation in 1934.
6. The number 88 has a dark side. In written correspondence, some groups use "88" as shorthand for what reprehensible phrase?

Answer: Heil Hitler

This shorthand was developed due to the letter H being the eighth letter in the alphabet. "88" is code for "HH", short for "Heil Hitler". White supremacists and NeoNazi groups have been using the term to be less overt, but it is common knowledge that is what the term represents.
7. Having a rather prominent role in a movie, this defunct make of car, while very sporty looking, earned a reputation for not being able to exceed 88 miles per hour. What make of car fits this bill?

Answer: DeLorean

Dr. Emmett Brown elected to add some "style" to his time machine by using a DeLorean in the "Back to the Future" trilogy. As he told Marty McFly, "when this baby hits 88 miles per hour, you're gonna see some serious..." But this extra feature eliminates going ABOVE 88 mph. That's not a lot of pickup.
8. The record for most tour wins in the field of professional golf for either gender was set at 88 in 1985. What professional, retired since 2005, set the bar of tour victories at 88?

Answer: Kathy Whitworth

Kathy Whitworth started in 1962 racking up tour wins, and in 1985, chalked up number 88 on the LPGA tour. Tiger Woods tied Sam Snead for the most tour wins on the PGA at 82, in 2019. Jack Nicklaus, while the leader in majors wins, ended his golf career with 73. And Nancy Lopez finished her career with 48.
9. The draw poker hand known as the "Dead Man's Hand", features an 88, as one prominent characteristic of the hand must include a pair of eights. What is the other pair of cards that must be present to be dubbed a "Dead Man's Hand"?

Answer: Aces

The term "Dead Man's Hand" comes from the final poker game played by Wild Bill Hickok in Deadwood, South Dakota. He was shot in the back by Jack McCall, a disgruntled gambler who was not even involved in the game at the time. Hickok was holding two pair, Aces and Eights, or "88's and Bullets".
10. 88 is a prominent number on sports jerseys. Tony Gonzalez, Michael Irvin, and Marvin Harrison all spent their pro careers wearing #88, and all of them are now members of their sport's Hall of Fame. What sport did they achieve the ultimate individual achievement in?

Answer: American Football

Tony Gonzalez reached the pinnacle in 2019. Michael Irvin reached the Hall in 2007. Marvin Harrison reached in 2016. NFL offensive players who are eligible to catch the ball as a receiver or tight end most often have two-digit numbers in the eighties, and more common now in the tens.

The other sports don't have a commonality with numbers in the eighties, so rounding up numerous high-end players with the number 88 is significantly more difficult.
