Answer: Tigers

The University of Missouri is home to the Tigers of course! The mascot appeared in 1890 when Missouri's first football team was assembled. The name Tigers was chosen to honor a local militia group that had used that name during the Civil War. Missouri's official Tiger mascot waited 94 years to be named. He's now known as "Truman the Tiger" after Harry S Truman.
2. Columbia is home to the first college for women west of the Mississippi, what was it's original name?

Answer: Christian Female College

Christian Female College is now known as Columbia College and has been co-educational since 1970. The original building, Williams Hall, predates the college's 1851 opening!
3. This College was founded in 1833 as a finishing school for women called Columbia Female Academy. What is it now known as?

Answer: Stephens College

Stephens became a full-fledged college in 1856 about five years after Christian Female College. In the 1860s when James L. Stephens gave $20,000 to the college, the college was then renamed in his honor. Two well-known graduates of Stephens College are actress Annie Potts, and news broadcaster Paula Zahn.

Audrain, Callaway and Moniteau County all border Boone County. Boone County is also home to the towns of Ashland, Centralia, Hallsville, and Harrisburg. The County is named for Daniel Boone.

Jane Froman was considered an American hero after she survived a plane crash while traveling to entertain American troops during World War II. Susan Hayward played Jane in the movie "With a Song in My Heart". Jane Froman retired to Columbia in 1961 and passed away in 1980.

Answer: William Jewell

William Jewell College is located in Liberty Missouri. William Jewell is buried at the Jewell Family Cemetery in Columbia. Also buried there is a former Missouri governor, Charles Henry Hardin.

Answer: Sam Walton

Sam and his brother Bud, both graduated from Hickman High in Columbia in the 1930s. after moving to Missouri from Oklahoma. J.C. Penney is also from Missouri, he was born in Hamilton, Missouri.
8. Which well-known NASCAR driver is a native of Columbia?

Answer: Carl Edwards

Carl Edwards started his racing career on dirt tracks around Missouri as a teenager and later began racing in the NASCAR truck series before moving in Nextel Cup and Nationwide racing in 2004.

Beetle's creator, Mort Walker, graduated from the University in 1948. The statue stands, well Beetle actually sits, outside Reynolds Alumni Center.
