Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The Gasparilla Pirate Festival, complete with pirate ship and other buccaneer-related activities, occurs every year in which Florida city?

Answer: Tampa

The Gasparilla is an annual celebration in Tampa, Florida. Held at the end of January, the festival includes an entry into Tampa Bay by legendary pirate Jose Gaspar and his "Krewe" of men. They meet with the mayor of Tampa, who turns over the keys of the city, and a large parade then ensues through the streets of downtown Tampa.

This festival also includes a child's parade, a night parade, pyrotechnic show, a beauty pageant, and lots of good food. This festival started in 1904 and has had an average attendance of over 400,000 people.
2. Sooner or later, you might decide to go to which state, home of "The World Cow Chip Throwing Championship"?

Answer: Oklahoma

You would need to travel to Beaver, Oklahoma, which proudly claims the (undisputed) title of "The Cow Chip Throwing Capital of the World". This western-style festival of fun was started in 1970, and includes a chili cook-off, parade, horseshoe throwing, carnival rides, golf tournament, and, of course, the highlight of everyone's day, The World Cow Chip Throwing Championship.

The wearing of sandals is not recommended at this American party!
3. For an event that is out of this world, you might visit Roswell, New Mexico to enjoy which of the following events?

Answer: Roswell UFO Festival

If you want to go to a unique little town, Roswell, New Mexico is the place to go. Every summer thousands flock to this enclave to celebrate the Roswell UFO Festival. On July 18, 1947 an unknown object fell out of the sky. Ufologists believed it was a spacecraft complete with aliens.

The military took over immediately, and the whole affair was left for the world to speculate upon. Almost every business or business name in this town is related to UFOs or aliens. This four-day, uniquely American festival includes a parade, an alien BBQ competition, lecturers, laser shows, music, and lots of folks dressed in unusual costumes.
4. One of the largest parties in the U.S. is the Mardi Gras, which is a week-long event that occurs in New Orleans, Louisiana every year, just before which religious observance?

Answer: Lent

Mardi Gras starts after the religious holiday of Epiphany and culminates on Shrove Tuesday, the day before Ash Wednesday. The date varies each year but is usually in February or March. This is a huge festival which includes parades, lots of nighttime drinking, some costume wearing, and a variety of food offerings at some of the areas many restaurants.

While Mardi Gras is celebrated in other towns in the U.S. and in other countries where it is often called Carnival, Mardi Gras in New Orleans is a one of a kind event and needs to be in your bucket list.
5. Don't let this become a sticky question for you, but which of the following celebrations would you be headed to if you were traveling in April to Michigan to join in the festivities?

Answer: Vermontville Maple Syrup Festival

Travel to the small town of Vermontville, Michigan in the spring and you can enjoy the Vermontville Maple Syrup Festival. This giant party includes two parades, a flea market, rides, and all kinds of food offerings made with maple syrup. If these don't sound good, you can try the arm wrestling competition, the princess pageant, the petting zoo or the illustrious and always fun "Pancake Derby"!
6. Which one of the following activities would you NOT find at The Summer Redneck Games in East Dublin, Georgia?

Answer: Peach cobbler eating contest

You would not find a peach cobbler eating contest at this wild and wacky Southern Festival. The whole party starts with the Oconee River Redneck Raft Race, which includes homemade rafts created from all kinds of unusual objects. There is music, food, beer, and a plethora of unusual activities other than the other options listed.
7. What is the name of the royal festival, sure to quench your hunger and thirst, that is held every year in Bell Buckle, Tennessee?

Answer: RC Cola and Moonpie Festival

Bell Buckle, Tennessee makes our list of places to go and things to see because it is home to the RC Cola and Moonpie Festival! If you visit you can see the world's largest Moonpie and then run in the ten-mile marathon. You can also take in clog dancing, watermelon seed spitting, moonpie tossing.

The RC dash, one of the festivals highlights, consists of people seeing how fast they can walk 20 feet with an open RC cola on their heads, without it falling off and soaking them in all its sticky sweet syrupiness. Sounds like fun in the summer to me!
8. To which American state would you have to travel if you wanted to enjoy the Kona Coffee Cultural Festival?

Answer: Hawaii

Hawaii is the only state in the U.S. where coffee is grown. Kona coffee is considered to be one of the finest coffees in the world. At this cultural celebration you can savor some of this nectar of the Gods, while watching the coffee picking contest. You can also savor some of the local food, watch hula dancers and see the Miss Kona Beauty Pageant.
9. Chandler, Arizona is home to a festival that celebrates the racing of which kind of animal?

Answer: Ostrich

There is nothing like ostrich racing in the desert! Watching grown men attempt to ride an ostrich, often after enjoying a beer or two, can make for some hilarious accidents. This large American get-together also includes lots of food, arts and crafts, parades, and an antique car show. All things ostrich can be bought at this festival. It is a truly unusual way to have fun in the sun.
10. First held in 1968, the "Spamarama" is a large celebration held in Austin, Texas, aimed at those who love computers.

Answer: False

Spamarama is actually a festival that celebrates, you guessed it, SPAM! (The kind you eat, not the kind that shows up on your computer.) In case you are a spam fanatic or simply looking for something different to do, just take a ride to Austin and get yourself a SPAM facial.

When you're done with that, just head over to the SPAM carving contest while munching on a SPAM flavored ice cream cone. There is also a SPAM throw and a tug of war over a SPAM pit. This celebration is usually held on April Fools Day...who'da thunk it?
