Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The logo on one of baseball's Minnesota Twins' baseball caps depicts two overlapping letters of the alphabet. "T" is one of them, what is the other?

Answer: C

The "T and C" stand for "Twin Cities", which is the nickname of the area that they are from (Minneapolis and St. Paul, Minnesota)

The Minnesota Twins have been playing baseball since 1901, when they were in Washington DC as the Senators and also the Nationals. They moved to Minnesota in 1961.
2. Which letter of the alphabet is used most often to begin the name of the 50 US states? (This letter is tied for the lead with the letter "N")

Answer: M

"M" and "N" each begin eight state names. A, I, and W are only at the beginning of 4 states each.
It is not surprising that "N" is at the top, as many states have been named with the word "New" as the first word. "M", however, was just more of a random chance of being popular.
3. Which letter of the alphabet is the name of one of the puppet characters in the children's television show, "Mr. Rogers' Neighborhood"?

Answer: X

"X" the Owl was one of many puppet characters used on this show. "X" lived in a tree with Henrietta Pussycat. Quite possibly this was one of the first condominium trees for puppets. Fred Rogers, the star of the show, died in 2003. The show produced 895 episodes over 33 years of airing.
4. In the game of "Scrabble", there are two tiles that are worth eight points. "X" is one of them, what is the other?

Answer: J

The letters "Z" and "Q" are each worth ten points and the "K" is worth five. Ten points is the highest point value of any letter in the game of "Scrabble".
Scrabble has been one of the most popular board games over the years of its existence. It has been sold in 121 countries with 29 different language versions.
5. In Nathaniel Hawthorne's novel, "The Scarlet Letter", which letter of the alphabet is the main character, Hestor Pryne, forced to wear on the breast of her clothing?

Answer: A

She was made to wear the "A" to identify her as an adulteress.
Hawthorne had this romance novel published in 1850. The phrase "Scarlet Letter" has been used since as a term for any mark of shame that someone is made to wear.
6. Which of the following letters is never used as a Roman Numeral?

Answer: R

In Roman Numerals, "C" represents 100, D represents 500, and M represents 1000. When you need to represent a much larger number in Roman Numerals, you place a horizontal bar over the letter, which makes the number 1000 times greater than its "non-bar" equivalent.
7. Which letter is considered to be one that is to be typed with your right hand, when using the conventional two handed typing method in the USA?

Answer: Y

With your fingers on the "home keys", your left hand should not strike any letter to the right of the "T", "G", and "B". The right hand should not strike any letter to the left of the "Y", "H" or "N".
8. In Morse Code, which letter is represented by ONLY dots and NO dashes?

Answer: H

"A" is represented by one dot and one dash, "J" is represented by one dot and three dashes, and "O" is represented by three dashes. The electric telegraph was developed in the mid 1800s by Samuel Morse and Alfred Vail. The code was later developed to allow operators to translate the dots and dashes that appeared on tape into text messages.
9. Up through and including 2007, which letter of the alphabet has been used as the first letter of the last name of a former US President?

Answer: V

The former President whose last name began with "V" was Martin Van Buren. Surprisingly, there are not too many unaccounted for letters that fit the bill for this bit of trivia.
Martin Van Buren was the United States' eighth President. He was the first President who was not of English, Irish or Scottish lineage. (He descended from the Dutch)
10. On the children's TV Show "Sesame Street", what letter did Cookie Monster sing was "good enough for me"

Answer: C

He sang "C is for Cookie, that's good enough for me". (He did, of course, love his cookies). Cookie Monster slowly became less of a focal point in the show than he had been. Elmo seems to have taken over some of that popularity in the more recent years of the show.
