Board Games Trivia Questions

1. What is the name of the man who designed the board game "Ticket to Ride"?

From Quiz
Ticket to Ride

Answer: Alan R. Moon

"Ticket to Ride" is a railroad themed board game for 2-5 players. The game was designed by Alan R. Moon, who was born in Southampton, England in 1951. "Ticket to Ride" was first published in 2004 and has won several awards including the prestigious Spiel des Jahres, which is awarded in Germany. Alan R. Moon also has several other award-winning board games to his credit including "Airlines", which was published in 1990 and "Elfenland", which was published in 1998.

2. BACKGAMMON. Assuming your opponent does not force the piece back to the beginning, what is the maximum distance you would need to move to have one of your pieces "bear off" or get off of the board?

From Quiz Really Classic Board Games

Answer: 24

References to a game specifically called backgammon date back to the 17th century. Ancestors of backgammon, however, can be found that are hundreds of years earlier. The maximum number would be 24 as can be seen by examining a backgammon board. A typical folding backgammon board is divided into half by the fold. On two opposite sides of that half are six elongated triangles which serve as the spaces for the pieces. If your piece starts on the first of these spots, the 24th move of your piece would bear it off. This is actually possible to do with one piece in a single turn if you roll double sixes. The roll would be doubled and six times four equals 24.

3. The cards Command Warren (may battle during daylight) and Cobbler (may move during evening) belong to which suit?

From Quiz Root (Board Game) [4]

Answer: Rabbit

Each of the three suits has a different focus. The mice cards are about intelligence, with Scouting Party preventing the use of Ambush cards, and Codebreakers letting players look at their opponents' hands. The rabbit cards are about logistics. Apart from Command Warren and Cobbler, they also have Better Burrow Bank, which lets them and another player each draw a card. The fox cards are about economy, with Stand and Deliver letting players steal cards from each other, and Tax Collector letting them trade a warrior for a card. The Bird cards generally help in battle, adding extra hits, or preventing some hits.

4. When a player has tokens or buildings in a clearing without warriors, it is considered defenceless. What effect does this have?

From Quiz Root (Board Game) [3]

Answer: Attackers deal one extra damage

When attacking a defenceless tokens and buildings, the attacker is guaranteed to score at least one hit (even when they roll a 0). If there are lots of buildings or tokens in the clearing (e.g. a Marquise de Cat's lumber camp), it may take multiple attacks to destroy all the tokens and buildings.

5. The Riverfolk Company is a band of otters that sell their services to the other players. With what do players pay for services?

From Quiz Root (Board Game) - The Riverfolk Expansion

Answer: Warriors

When a player buys a service from the Riverfolk Company, they pass over warrior meeples from their supply to the otters' payments box. The Riverfolk player can set the price for each of their services between one and four warriors. Purchasing services can lead to future challenges if the Riverfolk Company never releases those warriors back to the original player. Vagabonds pay for services by exhausting their own items, and then the Riverfolk player moves warriors from their own supply into the payments box.

6. What is the difference between buildings (square pieces) and tokens (round pieces)?

From Quiz Root (Board Game) [2]

Answer: Buildings can only be placed in slots

Each clearing has from one to three square slots in it that buildings must be placed in. If there are no available slots then a building cannot be built. There is no limit to the number of tokens that can be placed in a clearing (though faction-specific rules may prevent this, such as the Woodland Alliance who may have only one sympathy token in a given clearing). Both buildings and tokens, when destroyed, grant one point to the player who destroyed them. The number of tokens available is still limited by what comes in the box; new substitutes are not added.

7. Each playable clan in "Rising Sun" has a set Honor Rank, which will determine the seating order and who will go first. Which clan will always begin the game with the highest Honor and will always go first?

From Quiz Rising Sun (Board Game)

Answer: Koi (red) - the clan that can use Coins as Ronin

The order of the five clans are: Koi - Lotus - Turtle - Dragonfly - Bonsai. The Starting Honor Ranks of each are: 1 - 3 - 4 - 5 - 7. The 2, 6, and 8 are used for the clans found in the expansion and in the Kickstarter exclusive content. Kickstarter was the crowd-funding platform used to fund "Rising Sun."

8. "Root" has a deck of cards with different suits: mouse, rabbit, fox, and which fourth suit?

From Quiz Root (Board Game) [1]

Answer: Bird

Bird cards are wild cards for most purposes in "Root." Each of the twelve clearings is associated with mouse, rabbit, or fox, which affects how different cards are used by different factions. For example, the Woodland Alliance uses cards of different suits to spread sympathy tokens to matching clearings, but can use bird cards to target any clearing.

9. What is the extremely popular two person board game that has pieces called knight, queen, king and pawns?

From Quiz Games I'll Never Play

Answer: Chess

"Chess" is a two-person strategic board game played on a square board with sixty- four squares (in an eight by eight grid formation). One person controls white chess pieces and the other controls black chess pieces. Each player has sixteen pieces that include eight pawns, two bishops, two knights, two rooks, a queen and a king. Pieces are set out in the bottom two rows closest to the player and move across the board, capturing each other's pieces through various plays. Pieces move in specific ways, for example, a bishop can only move diagonally. The object of the game is to checkmate the opponent's king.

10. Go is a game intended for two players with playing pieces called stones. Similar to chess, what are the traditional colors for each side's stones?

From Quiz The Game of Go

Answer: black and white

The game of Go is usually played with white and black stones, on a board made up of a grid of black lines. The standard board size has 19 rows and columns, although smaller sizes are useful if players wish to play a faster game or are beginners to the game and want to simplify situations while still learning the rules and strategy of Go.

11. This will guarantee that you get no points in "Sushi Go". What a raw deal!

From Quiz How to NOT win modern board games

12. In this game players have to determine who the murderer is, where the murder took place and the murder weapon used. What's this classic game of bluffing and investigating?

From Quiz What's the Name of the Game?

Answer: Clue/Cluedo

Known as Clue in North America, this game was originally created in 1943 in the UK and has evolved into the game that up to six people can play, assuming the role of one of the suspects and rolling dice to move around rooms of a large mansion. When players enter a room, they can then ask a question to determine the killer, the room where the crime took place and the murder weapon used. It is a game of deduction, investigation, bluffing and paying attention to the information shared by other players.

13. What kind of game is "The Legends of Andor"?

From Quiz The Legends of Andor

Answer: Cooperative adventure board game

"The Legends of Andor" is a beautifully illustrated board game. The two-sided game board is a map of the land of Andor (the reverse side features the underground dwarf mines used in Legend 4). The story is told in six scenarios, called "legends", of increasing difficulty. The first (introductory) legend is a tutorial, which basically means you learn to play this game by starting to play (rather than reading the entire manual before you start). Everything is explained as you go along.

14. Debuting in 1972 was a game with a wide selection of sixteen (or 25 in the "Big" version) dice, but none of the dice are the same. And the dice feature letters. Players get three minutes to create as many words as possible. This game is...

From Quiz I Have No Time For Games

Answer: Boggle

Mixing sixteen letter-faced dice in a cube to make a 4x4 grid, you use adjacent letters one at a time to create three letter words or longer. The longer the word, the more valuable to your score. "Big Boggle" came around seven years after the original, and had a 5x5 grid of 25 dice. The other choices are all crossword-style word games.

15. What type of game pieces are used in Mah Jongg?

From Quiz Can you win at Mah Jongg?

Answer: Tiles

Although some of the terminology such as "hands" and "suits" is similar to card games, the game is played with rectangular tiles which are drawn and discarded.

16. In Farkle, there are many possible dice combinations--sets, straights, etc. What happens when you get a farkle?

From Quiz A Roll of the Dice

Answer: You lose your points for that round.

If you roll six of a kind on one roll you do get 3,000 points, but it does not have a special name like Yahtzee. A farkle, however, represents, having no dice that score on a particular roll. Single ones and fives score. Other dice need to score as part of a set of at least three. In Farkle, you start by rolling all six dice. If you score with some of your dice, you may set aside the die or dice that score and roll again with the remaining dice. If you are able to score with all six dice in either one or multiple rolls, you may pick up all of the dice and begin the process again, adding to your points. At any point you can stop and keep the points you have rolled on that turn. If on a particular roll, you score with none of the dice, that is called a farkle and you lose all of the points you have earned on that turn. There is no dice roll that causes you to skip a turn or double your score.

17. Derived from a game called "Halma", which is Greek for "jump", which traversal game is played on a board marked by 121 holes or indentations?

From Quiz No Luck Required

Answer: Chinese Checkers

You have a home base that holds 15 pieces. You need to move those 15 pieces across the board to your opponent's base, which sits directly opposite yours, before they get their pieces to your base. Now there are two ways that you are able to move your pieces; (i) by "stepping" into one of the six holes that surrounds your piece or (ii) by "hopping" or "jumping", as described in the question above, over another piece to cover a greater distance. The strategy that you would be looking to employ here is to set your pieces up in such a way to best use the hopping option and cover the greatest distance possible in a single move. A word of caution here - what may work really well for you can also be used against you. Sometimes you may need to stop short of covering the greatest possible distance because it may block you opponent and force them into taking a step. A Massachusetts surgeon by the name of George Monks created the game of "Hamla" in the mid-1880s, though his version was set on a square board. In 1892 a German based group called Ravensburger produced the star shape design that is prevalent today. The name of "Chinese Checkers" evolved as a marketing ploy created by the Americans in the 1920s to cash in on the country's fascination with all things Asian at the time.

18. Xiangqi originated in what populous Eastern country?

From Quiz Xiangqi

Answer: China

Xiangqi is sometimes called the most popular game in the world, and when you consider that it originated in China, it's not necessarily difficult to see why. It is one of several chess variants that arose as shatranj spread from India to the rest of the world. Xiangqi, shogi, and international chess are the three chess variants most recognized and played around the world, though xiangqi and shogi are relatively unknown outside of the Orient. The name "xiangqi" is pronounced as "shiang-chi" and means "elephant game."

19. Go is a game whose origins date back over 4,000 years to approximately 2,300 B.C. Which country is considered to have originated the game?

20. Cludeo or Clue was a popular game for my sisters and me when we were young. What though is NOT a name of one of the suspects in the UK version of the game?

From Quiz Board Games From My Childhood

Answer: Doctor Orange

It was not until when the games official release in 1949, that it got the name Cluedo. At the same time, the game was released in America as, "Clue", with only some slight changes to the characters names featured in the game.

Senet sets have been found in Egyptian tombs (including Tutankhamen's) dating to between 3000 and 3100 BC. Although the rules have been lost, it is believed that the main aim was to race your pieces across a board, using sticks that are thrown to determine how far a person moves (in the same way modern games use dice).

22. What is another common name for the board game checkers?

Checkers, also known as draughts, is a strategy board game which involve the diagonal moves of uniform game pieces and captures by jumping over opponent's pieces. Some cultures call the game draughts and some cultures call the game checkers.

25. In the UK this board game is called "Snakes and Ladders". What is it called in the USA?

From Quiz Last In, First Out

26. The beautiful game of backgammon is believed to have originated more than 5000 years ago and over the millennia various aspects of the game have changed. Traditionally, backgammon is a game for how many players?

From Quiz Backgammon: The Ancient Game

Answer: Two

Backgammon is a classic two-player board game that has intrigued and excited people for thousands of years. Knowing how long ago the game was played leads to the fascinating realisation of how long dice have been used in the pursuit of entertainment! An excavation, in what is now the east of Iran, unearthed remnants of the game. This archaeological evidence suggests that Persia may have been the birthplace of backgammon. Backgammon has evolved over the years and in the 20th century the rules of the game were standardised. One thing that hasn't really changed though is that the game is intended to be played by, and is indeed best played by, two people. That said, some modern backgammon tournaments have featured "doubles" matches with two teams, each consisting of two players, competing against each other for the victory.

27. Well I open one box first and see the contents. I see the Monopoly logo. There is a game board and play money with Mr. Krabs on them. There are 2 dice. There are properties which include the Krusty Krab. What edition of Monopoly is this?

From Quiz Family Game Night

Answer: SpongeBob Monopoly

The game is played almost like Monopoly. There is an optional Plankton twist where if you roll a one, he moves a space. When he gets to the Krusty Krab, the game is over.

28. Some people get lucky enough to have the money to buy lots of properties, some get stuck paying lots of taxes, some go to jail, it's just how they roll. Can you name the game?

From Quiz Life is Just a Game

Answer: Monopoly

In Monopoly, you roll the dice and move your marker around the board. You make many trips around during one game. While it's your turn, you end up doing things such as buying properties or paying to be on someone else's. When everyone runs out of money/properties, except one person, the game is over and the person with money wins.

29. In backgammon, what is a "lover's leap?"

From Quiz Basic Backgammon Vocabulary

Answer: an opening dice roll of six and five

A "lover's leap" in backgammon is an opening roll of 6-5 or 5-6. The best play for this roll is to move one of your back checkers from your back (24) point to your 13 point. Most experts agree that this is an unfavorable opening roll, since it forces you into a "running" game at an early stage in the game. It also leaves the back checker unprotected in your opponent's home board. Unfortunately, there is probably no better alternative move for this roll.

From Quiz Name That Board Game In Three Clues!

Answer: Trouble

"Trouble" was released in the United States in the 1960's and quickly became one of Milton Bradley's most popular board games. Developed by the Kohner Brothers the game shows a remarkable resemblance to Parcheesi in that both games feature a player trying to move four of their pieces around the board to safety before their opponents do. It's unique feature is the "Pop-o-matic" which is a clear plastic bubble found in the center of the board containing the die. Underneath the bubble lies a metal sheet which causes the die to tumble when the bubble is depressed. This way players never actually touch the die but instead press the bubble to determine their outcome. One of the advantages of this set up is that players can take turns in rapid succession and the sound of the clicking can add a frenzied tempo to the game. Parcheesi is the American version of the game Pachisi. Having originated in ancient India, Parcheesi is a cross and circle board game. In the American version players roll dice to move their pieces around 72 spaces to reach home in the center of the board with 12 spaces as safe havens where your pieces cannot be taken by your opponents. The first player to get all four pieces home wins and, traditionally, screams "Parcheesi!" Sorry! is also a cross and circle board game. While originating in England, Sorry! was released in the United States by Parker Brothers in 1934. Like Trouble and Parcheesi a player needs to move their four pieces home before their opponents. However, instead of a die, Sorry! uses cards with directions to move their pawn forward and backward including the Sorry! card which allows you to move your pawn to an opponent's space and send them back to start. Pay Day was introduced to the public in 1975 by Parker Brothers and was an immediate smash. Created by Paul Gruen, the game involves players moving around a gameboard with 31 spaces each representing a day of the month. Each space gives a player the opportunity to receive a Deal or Mail card on his way to reaching the Pay Day space where the player collects his monthly wages. The player who finishes the game with the most money becomes the victor.
