Answer: Latin

In Latin "aqua" means water and "mare" means sea, aquamarine is a combination of these two words. Aquamarine has many ties to the sea besides its rich sea-like colour; there are also many myths and superstitions involving the sea.
2. This important historical figure was gifted with a 1847 carat aquamarine, who am I talking about?

Answer: Eleanor Roosevelt

In 1935, the Brazilian government gifted Eleanor Roosevelt with a 1847 carat aquamarine. It is displayed at the Franklin D. Roosevelt Presidential Library and Museum.
3. If you were to purchase a piece of jewelry with an aquamarine setting, you would pay more for a "Santa Maria". What is a "Santa Maria"?

Answer: An aquamarine mined in Brazil.

"Santa Maria" aquamarines are the most famous on the market. The term "Santa Maria" indicated the location it was mined. These gems from Brazil are the most prized because of their rich sea-blue colour.
4. In Germany, aquamarines were at one time used in a unusual manner. What were they used for?

Answer: Lenses for glasses.

Thin slivers of aquamarine were mounted in frames and worn as eye glasses. These glasses were used to correct short-sightedness. Personally, I think that this is ingenious.
5. What form of mineral is the aquamarine?

Answer: Beryl

Aquamarine is a form of beryl. It is a cousin of the emerald which is also a type of the mineral beryl.
6. What is a nick-name for the aquamarine?

Answer: Poor man's diamond.

It is sometimes referred to as a "poor man's diamond" because of the hardness of the mineral. Aquamarine is also fairly easy to care for. While they require regular cleaning, they will resist damage.
7. Where is the aquamarine the official gemstone?

Answer: Colorado, United States

Aquamarine was chosen as the official gemstone for Colorado, United States in 1971. During that year Colorado had two state governors, they were Mark Anthony Hogan and John D Vanderhoof.
8. When aquamarine is mined, what shape does it generally grow in?

Answer: Hexagonal form ( 6 sides)

Aquamarine is formed by "hydrothermal process", this means that underground magma has been mixed with rain water. The shade of blue is determined by the amount of iron in the gemstone. Some of these gemstones can be made more blue by heating them, the heat will remove the undesirable colour leaving the more acceptable sea water color.
9. What month is the aquamarine the birthstone for?

Answer: March

It was chosen as March's birthstone, in 1912, by the American National Association of Jewellers. Several birthstones were assigned that year. Perhaps they had a convention to choose the stones.
10. In ancient times, how was aquamarine used to protect sailors?

Answer: Ancient sailors would often wear amulets carved from aquamarine, or have this stone as the main setting.

An amulet, from roughly 500BC, was one of the earliest finds of this nature. The amulet was of Greek origins and is a carving of the God Poseidon. These amulets were believed to have protective powers and symbolized safety to the sailors. During a storm, the sailors would throw their amulets overboard to appease the Gods and allow safe passage.

There are still some Thai cultures that believe wearing a aquamarine will save the wearer from drowning.
