Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What company developed a plug in device called a Firestick which allows the streaming of films, television programmes or music to a television?

Answer: Amazon

The Firestick (or Fire TV Stick) is part of the range of hardware developed by Amazon under the generic label Fire TV. This range allows us to access digital audio and video materials over the Internet to a high definition television. It can also be used to play video games.
2. In Roman mythology the god of fire is Vulcan. Who is his counterpart in Greek mythology?

Answer: Hephaestus

Hephaestus, son of Zeus and Hera, was born lame and ejected from Olympus as a result. However, he was later brought back by Dionysus. Hephaestus was the blacksmith who made armour worn by Achilles and the winged helmet and sandals for Hermes, the messenger of the gods.

He was also the husband of Aphrodite, the goddess of love and beauty, though she was famed for having many lovers including humans as well as gods.
3. The career of which American oilwell firefighter inspired the 1968 John Wayne film "Hellfighters"?

Answer: Red Adair

Paul Adair, known as "Red", became famous as a firefighter after his success in putting out a fire in a gas field in Algeria in 1962, the incident which inspired the film. He developed the technique of using explosives to put out fires by creating a high velocity blast which deprived the fire of oxygen.

Harold B. Hairston was the first African American Fire Commissioner for the city of Philadelphia, "Boots" Hansen worked with Adair in dealing with a huge blowout on a North Sea rig and Dennis Smith is a retired firefighter from New York fire department who has become a successful author.
4. Which country in the Caucasus mountain region has been known for many centuries as "the Land of Fire", probably because of spontaneous fires arising from leaks from its natural gas reserves?

Answer: Azerbaijan

Azerbaijan has taken "The Land of Fire" as its motto and used it in tourist promotions. Between 2012 and 2014 it appeared as the sponsorship logo on the shirts of the Spanish football club Atletico Madrid.

The name goes back to ancient times, perhaps as a result of the continuously burning gas leaking on the hillside known as Yanar Dag. There are references to the burning land in the middle ages and as early as the first century CE.
5. What is the title of the series of fantasy novels by George R.R. Martin of which "A Game of Thrones" is the first volume?

Answer: A Song of Ice and Fire

"A Game of Thrones" was published in 1996. By the time the fifth volume in the series had been published it had been adapted into an award winning television series, the first series of which made its appearance in 2011.

There is an enormous range to the story of the battle for power between various family dynasties, complicated by the need to defend the kingdom against external threat from supernatural forces from across the northern Wall. The involvement of a further subplot involving dragons gives an additional focus in a complex interplay of themes and characters.
6. The 1989 biographical film "Great Balls of Fire!" is about which rock'n'roll star?

Answer: Jerry Lee Lewis

The film takes its title from one of Jerry Lee Lewis' biggest hits, along with "Whole Lotta Shakin' Goin' On". His rock'n'roll career was damaged in 1958 when his marriage (his third at the age of 22!) with his 13 year old cousin Myra Gale Brown was made public.

This was only one of many controversies surrounding Lewis, but he continued to be successful professionally, switching to playing country and western and having many hits in the C&W charts. In 1989 he was awarded a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.

In the film, he was portrayed by Dennis Quaid.
7. Which open source web browser was created by the Mozilla Foundation and released in 2004?

Answer: Firefox

The Mozilla Foundation is a not for profit organisation which works with a community of open source web developers across the world. Profits are re-invested in new projects.

Firefox was developed first in 2002 and released in 2004 and for a time became a serious challenger to Internet Explorer.
8. Which band took the song "Fire" to number one in the UK charts and number two in the Billboard Hot 100 in the USA in 1968?

Answer: The Crazy World of Arthur Brown

Arthur Brown formed the band in 1967 and released "Fire", their second single, in the following year. With its distinctive shouted intro - "I am the god of hellfire, and I bring you ... Fire" - it was a huge international hit, achieving a gold disc for over a million sales.

The stage performances of the band were equally dramatic, involving spectacular makeup and even a burning helmet. However, they were never able to follow up the success of their first hit so remained one of the most memorable one hit wonders.
9. By what name is the seventh century Byzantine weapon known which could be thrown in pots or projected through tubes, and was used to devastating effect against ships?

Answer: Greek fire

Probably developed in the seventh century CE, no one knows precisely the chemical composition of Greek fire. It was some form of combustible chemical compound which probably contained naphtha. It was greatly feared as it could be projected through a brass tube towards enemy ships, which usually caught fire instantly. One terrifying feature was that it could continue to burn on water, so water could not be used to extinguish it.

Its last recorded use is in the early thirteenth century.
10. Which children's television character lives in the fictional Welsh village of Pontypandy?

Answer: Fireman Sam

Fireman Sam first appeared on the Welsh language channel S4C and on BBC One in 1987. The concept was developed by two former firemen and was developed in Cardiff by the illustrator Rob Lee.

The original series ran until 1994 but then disappeared until 2005. Both of these existences used stop motion photography but in 2008 a new version was created using CGI technology.
