Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Where in Italy is the Bocca della Verità (the mouth of truth)?

Answer: Rome

The mouth of truth is in the Santa Maria in the Cosmedin church. It is a big circular stone with holes where its eyes, nose, and open mouth are. According to tradition, liars who place their hand inside the open mouth will lose some of their fingers. The origin of the stone disc is unknown, but it dates back to the 1st century.
2. In which country did the world's first elephant hospital open?

Answer: Thailand

The elephant hospital is located in Northern Thailand in Lampang and was opened in 1993. Over 4,000 elephants have been treated at the hospital for a wide range of illnesses and injuries. Visitors can enter the hospital and look around, or help with caring for the animals.

Elephants live in Asia and Africa, not in New Zealand (which is in Oceania).
3. The red lionfish is native to the Indo-Pacific region. It was accidentally introduced elsewhere in the world in the 20th century and is considered an invasive species. Which of these island nations is taking action against the lionfish in an attempt to restore the native ecosystem?

Answer: Bermuda

People in Bermuda, along with other Caribbean nations, are trying to encourage the use of lionfish in the local cuisine. The invasive species has no natural predators in the area, and they are eating their way through the rest of the ecosystem. Lionfish hunting is encouraged in order to preserve the natural marine wildlife.

Lionfish are becoming a pest around the world. As the Mediterranean Sea grows warmer, they are moving northwards towards Cyprus and Greece, too.
4. Which mammal can be spotted on guided tours in the hills and mountains of northern Spain?

Answer: Iberian wolf

The clue is in the name! The word 'Iberian' refers to Spain and Portugal. Iberian wolves nearly became extinct towards the end of the 20th century due to hunting. As local people moved away, however, the wolf population started to rise again. Tour guides take people to remote locations in northern Spain in order to see the wolves in their natural habitat.

None of the other three animals listed are native to Spain.
5. Where in Ghana is the Boabeng-Fiema Monkey Sanctuary?

Answer: In the centre, in the Brong Ahafo Region

In Ghana, people living in Boabeng Fiema and Buoyem believe that the mona and black-and-white colobus monkeys are sacred. It is against local law to harm the monkeys, and the area has become a safe haven for the vulnerable species. Tourists can visit the Boabeng-Fiema Monkey Sanctuary, where the monkeys will climb all over you and eat out of your hand!

The Sahara desert is much further north than Ghana, and the Ghanaian coast is in the south, not the east.
6. Hong Kong has an iconic tram system. What are the trams called?

Answer: Ding dings

There are six main routes that visit the most famous tourist attractions on the island of Hong Kong. Trams have been a form of transport there for over 100 years, and they are very environmentally friendly. The trams themselves are iconic because they are all double-deckers.

Tuk-tuks are three-wheeled taxis often found in Thailand.
7. Which Chilean town is famous for surfing?

Answer: Punta de Lobos

The Chilean town of Punta de Lobos is well-known globally for surfing. The waves have been known to reach nine metres, so people go there from all over to surf. The town also has beautiful views, grey sand, and 50 metre-high cliffs. Its rocky outcrops are homes to sea lions. Conservationists are campaigning to preserve to natural beauty of the area in the face of growing tourism. Punta de Lobos translates as Wolves Point in English.

Buenos Aires is in Argentina, not Chile. Santiago and Curicó are inland; they are not on the coast so it would be hard to surf there!
8. Arreau is a village in France. It has an unusual way of making cakes. What is it?

Answer: The cake is made on a spit.

Cake on a spit is traditionally cooked in the regions of Aveyron and Hautes-Pyrénées. The process is over 200 years old, and according to tradition, it was brought back by Napoleonic soldiers returning from Russia. It is made with eggs, flour, sugar, butter, and rum, and takes five hours to prepare. The batter is poured over the spit as it is turned over an open fire.
9. Which of these archipelagos is in Canada?

Answer: The Magdalen Islands

The Magdalen Islands have lots of rocks lying just below the surface of the water. As a result, many of the people living in the area are descendants of shipwrecked sailors who ran aground in the area. People like to scuba dive to find shipwrecks and to look at the flora and fauna on the seabed.

The Hebrides are in Scotland, the Great Barrier Reef is in Australia, and Stockholm archipelago is in Sweden.
10. The Nalaga'at theatre group is based in Jaffa, Israel. What is it famous for?

Answer: It is a deaf-blind acting group.

Many of the actors in the groups suffer from the same genetic condition which means that they are deaf from birth and become blind over time. The actors use special cues and signals. For example, drums are used in performances because the actors can feel the vibrations. Supertitles are used to communicate with the audience. One of Nalaga'at theatre group's most famous productions was 'Not By Bread Alone'.
