Arthur Treacher (1894-1975) was an English actor known for specializing in "butler" roles, including two films featuring the fictional butler Jeeves. In later life, he was the announcer and sidekick for Merv Griffin on his talk show. The "Arthur Treacher's Fish and Chips" chain was founded in Columbus, Ohio in 1969.

By the late 1970s, the chain had expanded to approximately 800 locations.
