Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which of these famous ancient landmarks was NOT one of the Seven Wonders of the World?

Answer: Colosseum

Though undeniably one of the most impressive monuments of antiquity, Rome's Colosseum was never part of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World, as it was built much later. It was, though, included in some later lists, such as the Seven Wonders of the Middle Ages.

Of the remaining choices, the Great Pyramid of Giza in Egypt is the only one of the original Seven Wonders left standing, as well as the oldest. Both the Lighthouse of Alexandria and the Mausoleum of Halicarnassus were destroyed by earthquakes in the Middle Ages.
2. Which renowned Italian writer (winner of the 1934 Nobel Prize for Literature) wrote a play by the title of "Six Characters in Search of an Author"?

Answer: Luigi Pirandello

Born in Sicily in 1867, Luigi Pirandello is one of the few Italian authors widely known abroad - mainly on the strength of his plays, considered by many as forerunners of the Theatre of the Absurd. "Six Characters in Search of an Author" (Sei Personaggi in Cerca d'Autore), written in 1921, was highly controversial at the time, while now it is held as one of Pirandello's best works.

The other three choices are all major Italian writers, though none of them lived in the 20th century. Dante Alighieri (author of "The Divine Comedy") and Giovanni Boccaccio (author of "The Decameron") both lived in the 14th century, while Alessandro Manzoni (author of "The Betrothed") was active in the 19th century.
3. Which British new wave band released an album by the title of "Seven and the Ragged Tiger"?

Answer: Duran Duran

Released in 1983, "Seven and the Ragged Tiger" was Duran Duran's third studio album. According to singer Simon LeBon, "seven" refers to the five band members plus their two managers, and the "ragged tiger" to success. The album contains three hit singles: "The Reflex", "Union of the Snake" and "New Moon on Monday".

The remaining choices are all successful British bands of the Eighties, like Duran Duran still active to this day.
4. Which country's flag features a six-pointed star in its centre?

Answer: Israel

The flag of Israel was adopted in October 1948, five months after the State of Israel was established. The six-pointed star, whose distinctive shape is a compound of two equilateral triangles, is outlined in blue on a white background between two blue stripes. It represents the Star of David, the symbol of Judaism and Jewish identity.

The remaining countries' flags all have five-pointed stars in their centres.
5. Which of the following bodies of water was considered part of the Seven Seas in medieval Europe?

Answer: Black Sea

"Seven Seas" is an ancient phrase that denotes all the world's oceans. However, not surprisingly, the concept has changed throughout the ages, especially after the "discovery" of the New World and the age of exploration. The medieval definition was rooted in that of Greece and Rome, who were familiar with the Black Sea, but not with the other three.
6. Which of these animals has six legs?

Answer: bee

Bees are insects, and as such they have six legs. Scorpions and lobsters are arthropods, and have eight legs. Squid, on the other hand, are molluscs, and do not have legs, but arms - eight to be precise - as well as two longer tentacles.
7. Which Biblical character is said to have performed the Dance of the Seven Veils?

Answer: Salome

The historical Salome was the daughter of Herod II and Herodias. She was identified with the unnamed woman who, in Mark's and Matthew's Gospels, danced before Herod, leading to John the Baptist's death. In later tradition, she became the epitome of the "femme fatale", as depicted by many writers and artists.

The other three choices are all female characters of the Old Testament. Like Salome, Delilah is a temptress who betrays Samson to the Philistines. On the other hand, Rahab is a prostitute who helps the Israelites in capturing the city of Jericho, and Judith is the heroic young widow who kills the Assyrian general Holofernes.
8. Which of these sports involves teams of six players?

Answer: ice hockey

Ice hockey is played by two teams of six players. Basketball teams have five players, baseball teams have nine, and water polo teams have seven.
9. Which of these films tells the tale of a medieval knight who plays a game of chess with Death?

Answer: The Seventh Seal

Starring Max von Sydow and Bengt Ekerot, and set at the time of the Black Death, "The Seventh Seal" (1957) was directed by iconic Swedish director Ingmar Bergman. Its title refers to a passage in the Book of Revelation.

The other three choices are all well-known classic films, though Billy Wilder's "The Seven Year Itch" (1955) is definitely more light-hearted than the rest. "The Magnificent Seven", directed by John Sturgis and released in 1960, was a remake of Akira Kurosawa's "Seven Samurai" (1954).
10. Which form of entertainment would you associate with the name Six Flags?

Answer: amusement parks

Six Flags Entertainment Corp., the world's largest amusement park corporation, owns 18 properties in the USA. The company was founded in Texas in 1961, and its name refers to the flags of the six different nations that have ruled that state (France, Spain, Mexico, the Republic of Texas, the United States of America, and the Confederate States of America).
