Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Australia Day commemorates all BUT which one of the following?

Answer: The proclamation of 'Australia, realm of George III'

The word Australia did not exist for another fifteen years after the penal colony at Sydney was first established in 1788.
2. Amongst Aboriginal Australians, 26 January is sometimes called what?

Answer: Invasion Day

It is rather silly (and sad) that Australia's national day celebrates white settlement, to the exclusion of Aborigines.
3. International cricket matches are traditionally held in which city on Australia Day?

Answer: Adelaide

Either Test Cricket matches or One Day Internationals are held on the Australia Day holiday.
4. Australia Day was first celebrated with a public holiday under the name 'Australia Day' in which State?

Answer: Victoria

The first 'Australia Day' was celebrated in Victoria in the early 1920s. The colony and State of New South Wales has always counted its birthday from 26 January, but it only later joined in on the name 'Australia Day'.
5. Which of the following was not a plausible reason for Australia celebrating its bicentenary in 1988?

Answer: The constitution was turning 200 years old

Australia's constitution was enacted in 1901, upon Federation.
6. Quite a few people know what the capital of Australia is, but what was the first capital of the nation?

Answer: Melbourne

Melbourne was Australia's most populated city at the time of Federation (1901) and remained the capital until it was moved to Canberra in 1927.
7. Australia's population is closest to which of these figures?

Answer: 28,000,000

There is a general ecological controversy about the largest population that Australia can sustain, being made mostly of desert.
8. Which ethnic group is registered by census as the smallest ethnic community in Australia?

Answer: Hmong

The Hmong form a tiny minority in parts of Indochina and retain a distinct array of customs.
9. How many times have Australia's swimmers out-tallied all other countries in the World Swimming Championships?

Answer: Once

In 2001, in Fukuoka, Japan.
10. What is the only part of Australia ever to vote in favour of seceding from the Commonwealth of Australia?

Answer: Western Australia

During the Great Depression, Western Australia was a burgeoning State with a fierce sense of independence and actually voted in a plebiscite to secede. The matter was deferred to Whitehall, where it was decided that secession was not a constitutional possibility. Australia's Federal Government was forced to assuage Western Australian resentment by allocating more funds for development.

In New England, in north eastern New South Wales, there was a secessionist movement to become a state in its own right, but by the time a referendum of residents was held, the movement had lost momentum. Likewise in Far North Queensland, the Queensland Government has been successful in preventing a number of attempts to create new States since before Federation.
