Carl Lee Perkins was born in Tiptonville, TN, April 9, 1932. He played a significant part in establishing American rockabilly music. Rockabilly is a combination of R&B and country music that evolved in the early 1950s.
At seven years old he started playing a guitar his father made from a cigar box, broomstick and baling wire. He was very poor and struggling when he wrote "Blue Suede Shoes" in 1955. The song went to #1 on Billboard magazine's country music charts, it would be the only #1 hit he would have.
