Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Who would wear "something old, something new, something borrowed, something blue"?

Answer: A bride

Wearing one of each of these items is supposed to bring good luck to a bride on her wedding day. In ancient times blue symbolised faithfulness, purity and loyalty. Brides often wear a blue garter or have blue flowers in their bouquet.
2. In the nursery rhyme that begins "Little Boy Blue come blow your horn", where is Little Boy Blue to be found?

Answer: Under a haystack fast asleep

This nursery rhyme was first recorded in print in "Tommy Thumb's Little Song Book" around 1744, but has probably been around for much longer. The rhyme concludes - 'Where is the boy who looks after the sheep? He's under a haystack fast asleep.'
3. Who directed the film "Blue Velvet?"

Answer: David Lynch

"Blue Velvet" was written and directed by David Lynch and was released in 1986. It was a very controversial film at the time because of its strong sex and violence content but is now considered to be a cult classic. It tells the story of a college student who finds a human ear in a field and who gets drawn into the seedy underbelly of his home town while attempting to track down the origin of the ear.
4. If something happens "once in a blue moon" then it is a very rare event. What is a blue moon?

Answer: A second full moon occuring within a calendar month

On average there will be 41 blue moons in a century. The average length between moons is 29.5 days, so in order to have a blue moon the first full moon must appear at the very beginning of the month so that a second one can appear before the month is over. There can never be a blue moon in February because the month does not have enough days.
5. If your skin has turned blue because of a lack of oxygen in your blood, what would your condition be called?

Answer: Cyanosis

Cyanosis may be caused by severe lung disease, respiratory distress or respiratory failure. It is treated by giving the patient oxygen as quickly as possible. The word "cyanosis" comes from the Greek word "kyanosis" meaning "a dark blue colour".
6. Who painted the famous "Blue Boy" painting?

Answer: Thomas Gainsborough

Thomas Gainsborough is one of the most famous English painters of the 18th century. The "Blue Boy" is one of his most well known works. It is thought to be a portrait of Jonathan Buttall, the son of a wealthy hardware merchant and is called the "Blue Boy" because the boy in the portrait is dressed all in blue.

The painting can now be found in the Huntington Library, San Marino, California.
7. The "Blue Danube" is the name of a waltz by Strauss and refers to the Danube River. How many countries does the Danube flow through or by?

Answer: Ten

The Danube flows through or borders Germany, Austria, Slovakia, Hungary, Croatia, Serbia, Romania, Bulgaria, Moldova and Ukraine. It is Europe's second longest river, originating in the Black Forest in Germany and flowing east to empty into the Black Sea. It is the only river in the world to flow through four capital cities - Vienna, Bratislava, Budapest and Belgrade.
8. What did Levi Strauss call blue jeans when he first produced them in the 1870s?

Answer: Waist overalls

Levi Strauss established a company in San Francisco which imported dry goods such as clothing and bolts of fabric. In 1872 he was approached by a tailor named Jacob Davis who had discovered he could strengthen the trousers he made by using metal rivets at the points of strain. Jacob Davis was looking for a business partner so that he could patent and manufacture this clothing. Levi Strauss joined forces with him and in 1873 they started manufacturing their 'copper riveted waist overalls.' Blue denim was used as the fabric because of it's sturdiness.
9. The sapphire is a beautiful blue stone. For the sapphire to be your birthstone you would have to be born in what month?

Answer: September

The name 'sapphire' comes from the Greek word 'sapphirus' meaning 'blue'. One of the largest and most famous sapphires is the 563 carat "Star of India" which is in the American Museum of Natural History. It is a star sapphire. Star sapphires are cut to reflect light from within the stone in a six-legged star pattern.
10. Who had a US top 40 hit in 1978 with the pop ballad "Bluer than Blue"?

Answer: Michael Johnson

Michael Johnson is an American singer/songwriter. Although best known in the country music charts his biggest hit is the soft pop song "Bluer than Blue" which was written by Randy Goodrum. Barry Manilow, Nanci Griffiths and Zona Jones have all recorded cover versions of the song.
