Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Nick Bottom is a character in Shakespeare's "A Midsummer Night's Dream". He is one of a group of tradesmen known as "Mechanicals" who perform a play at a wedding. What was Nick Bottom's trade in the play?

Answer: Weaver

Nick Bottom was the weaver. The other members of the troupe were Snout the tinker, the joiner was Snug, the tailor was Starveling and there was also a bellows-mender called Flute. How appropriate that the bellows-mender is named after an instrument! They were lead by the carpenter called Quince.
2. From which Eminem song are the following lyrics? "My life is full of empty promises And broken dreams I'm hoping things will look up But there ain't no job openings"

Answer: Rock Bottom

"Rock Bottom" was from Eminem's second album. The album "The Slim Shady LP" was released in February, 1999. The album has sold millions around the world since its release. No, I can't explain that but to each their own ;-)
3. The British television show "Bottom" featured Rik Mayall and Adrian Edmondson as flatmates. Mr Edmondson played a character named Eddie. Who did Rik Mayall play in "Bottom"?

Answer: Richie

"Bottom" was the story of Richie and Eddie living on the dole and causing havoc around them. Three series were made in total. It debuted in 1991, the second series was made in 1992 and the final series in 1995.

Both actors often played characters with names similar to their own. Adrian Edmondson has played Edward "Eddie" Hitler (in "Bottom"), Ed Barnes and Sir Adrian Dangerous in TV programmes. Rik Mayall has played (in various shows) Richard Richard, Dick, Richard, Richard Rich, Richard Dangerous, "Rest Home" Ricky and of course, Rick in "The Young Ones."

Adrian Edmondson was in a band called.. wait for it... The Bum Notes and they provided the theme music for "Bottom". Seems quite apt really.
4. "Pygea" means relating to the buttocks. If I said someone has "steatopygea", what sort of buttocks would they have?

Answer: Fatty buttocks

"Steato" comes from a Greek word meaning tallow. It now relates to fat so someone with steatopygea has fatty buttocks. This can be due to a genetic characteristic seen in some people of African heritage. Some tribes consider it beautiful. The fat deposits can spread around to the front of the thighs and down to the knees. It generally affects women but men can have the tendency also.
5. The word "buttock" most likely comes from an old English word "buttuc". What did "buttuc" most likely mean according to the Oxford English Dictionary?

Answer: A short piece of land

I'm afraid the OED has spoken and said it meant a "short piece of land". "Callipygea" is the word for beautiful buttocks - think of calligraphy meaning beautiful writing. To butt heads with an ox is well, silly.
6. Washington D.C. has a neighbourhood near the Potomac River which suffers a high rate of mist and fog. George Washington University is located in this area. What is this locale called?

Answer: Foggy Bottom

Foggy Bottom's predisposition to have fog didn't stop the US Navy putting their first naval observatory there. Nowhere better to observe the fog I suppose. ;-) These days Foggy Bottom is the home of George Washington University, The Watergate Hotel, The Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts and several government offices such as the Headquarters of the Department of the Interior.
7. Feel like a tropical holiday in The Bottom? The Bottom is the capital of the island of Saba. With a population of about 500, in which body of water would you find The Bottom?

Answer: Caribbean Sea

The island of Saba is located in the Caribbean Sea. Saba is part of the Caribbean Netherlands and has a population of about 1,400 people with about 500 living in the capital. Please don't try to have a tropical holiday in the Southern Ocean.
8. "Bottom of the harbour" schemes were big news in Australia in the 1980s. What did they involve?

Answer: Tax fraud

The "bottom of the harbour" schemes were news headlines for months with the Australian Tax Office hunting down fraudulent businessmen. The scheme involved taking the assets and profits from a company and hiding them. The company then had nothing to declare in the way of income and nothing with which to pay any tax. The company vanished into the hands of an uninterested owner and sometimes the company records disappeared. In effect, the company and its records had sunk to the "bottom of the harbour".

Sydney does have a road tunnel under the harbour. It opened in 1992 but the development of it had no relation to the "bottom of harbour" schemes mentioned here.
9. Particle physicists discovered something now known as the bottom quark. It has another name though. What is the other name for a bottom quark?

Answer: Beauty quark

This is where I must confess my lack of knowledge about physics. Thanks to Georgia State University's website for the simplest explanation I could find about quarks.
http://hyperphysics.phy-astr.gsu.edu/hbase/particles/quark.html#c1
I gather that quarks and leptons are the elementary particles with which matter is built. The bottom quark was discovered in 1973 at the Fermilab near Chicago. There were calls for the bottom quark to be called the beauty quark but the term bottom quark dominated. That's what I could figure out. For more complex information please call 1800-PHYSICIST and ask for Mr Einstein. If I've made a mistake with my interpretation of quarks please let me know! :-)
10. The 1990s saw Noel Edmonds hosting a Saturday night television show in the UK. The show was set in the fictional town of Crinkly Bottom. What was the name of the show?

Answer: Noel's House Party

"Noel's House Party" was on television from 1991 to 1998. Entertainment included audience participation games such as Sofa Soccer, Cash for Questions and The Big Pork Pie. Celebrities would also appear on the show as guests or as victims of a prank arranged by the show.
