Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Anne McCaffrey began the "Dragonriders of Pern" series in 1967. Which of these books included the quote from which this quiz title is taken? "Black, blacker, blackest, And cold beyond frozen things. Where is between when there is naught To Life but fragile dragon wings?"

Answer: Dragonflight

This series is about a people living before industrialization. The dragons are thinkers, and their riders communicate telepathically.

Each of the books provided in the answers are part of the "Dragonriders of Pern" series. "Weyr Search" is the first book in the series and was released in 1968. "Dragonflight" was released in 1968, "The White Dragon" was released in 1978, and "All the Weyrs of Pern" was released in 1991.

Working with McCaffrey, Mike Freeman and Tania Opland created and published a collection of songs titled "Masterharper of Pern", which includes this verse as part of "Lessa's Ride".
2. When traveling to China, one might visit the site of the Nine Dragon Wall. But wait! There's more than one Nine Dragon Wall! Where is the oldest of them all?

Answer: Datong, Shanxi Province

Each of these walls includes the nine dragons, but the depictions are different (e.g., one has the dragons playing with a pearl, while another has the dragons playing in the clouds).

The Nine Dragon Wall (45.5 meters long, 8 meters high) in Datong was built in 1392 to block evil spirits from the residence of the prince, the 13th son Zhu Guidai of the first Ming emperor Zhu Yuanzhang. A second Nine Dragon Wall (25.84 meters long, 6.65 meters high) was built in Beihai Park, Beijing (I've not been able to determine when this one was built, have found dates of 1402, 1602 and 1756). One Nine Dragon Wall (31 meters long, 6 meters high) was built in the Forbidden City in 1773. In 2002, a fourth Nine Dragon Wall (75 meters long, 5 meters high) was built in Nanning, Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region.
3. The Public Broadcasting Service (PBS) aired a children's show called "Dragon Tales" where two human children visited Dragon Land to learn and play with dragons. Who made up the two-headed dragon?

Answer: Zak and Wheezie

The show "Dragon Tales" was first aired from 1999 to 2005. The children, Max and Emmy, travel to Dragon Land to play, participate in dragon quests, and work through problems with their dragon friends, Cassie, Ord, Zak and Wheezie. Zak (green) and Wheezie (purple) are brother and sister, and a two-headed dragon.
4. Ty Inc. has been making Beanie Babies since 1993, and there have been a few cuddly dragons. Which of these was the first? "_____ lives in a dream, The most beautiful that you have ever seen, Through magic lands she likes to fly, Look up and watch her, way up high!"

Answer: Magic the Dragon

Magic, a pure white dragon, was introduced in June 1995 and retired in December 1997. Each of the options used for answers were released as Beanie Babies, as were several other dragon characters. Each Beanie Baby comes with a label in the shape of a red heart and the character's poem inside.

The Beanie Babies have been collector items almost from the start. Some of the other products that Ty Inc. has produced are Baby Ty, Beanie Buddies, and even Valenteenies.
5. In the movie "How to Train Your Dragon", teen-aged Hiccup befriends a Night Fury dragon. What name does Hiccup give his new friend when he learns that the dragon can retract his teeth?

Answer: Toothless

This 2010 computer-animated film was directed by Chris Sanders and Dean DeBlois. It tells the story of an awkward teen-aged Viking named Hiccup and his friendship with the dragon Toothless. The movie idea came from a series of books about the adventures of Hiccup Horrendous Haddock III that were "translated from the Old Norse" by Cressida Cowell.
6. When touring Krakow, Poland, one site to visit is a metal sculpture of the seven-headed Wawel Dragon created in 1970 by Bronislaw Cromy. The sculpture included a design feature that allows what to occur every five minutes?

Answer: The dragon breathes fire

Tubing was built into the sculptured dragon's mouth and it carries natural gas which allows the dragon to "breathe" fire every five minutes.

The legend tells that the dragon terrorized folk unless he was fed a young girl child each month. This continued until the only girl child left was the King's daughter. The king offered her hand in marriage to any that could slay the dragon. A cobbler's apprentice filled a lamb with sulfur and left it outside the dragon's den. The dragon ate the lamb, but soon thirsty, went to drink from the nearby river until he exploded! Everyone else lived happily ever after.
7. Ronn Lucas has entertained many audiences with his ventriloquism performances, but what is the name of the dragon puppet he entertained us with on the "Late Show with David Letterman"?

Answer: Scorch

A television show for CBS was created for Scorch in 1992. Scorch, a living dragon, pretended to be a ventriloquist puppet. Though six episodes were filmed, only the first three were aired.

Ronn Lucas has headlined in Las Vegas, and had his own show on BBC in the early 1990s. His puppets are Scorch, Buffalo Billy and Chuck Roast. Drippy the Dragon is the puppet of ventriloquist Mr. Jim from Australia.
8. Dragons are mentioned in many musical theatre productions. During which show does Sancho sing about a dragon? "Oh, I haven't fought a windmill in a fortnight And the humble joys get duller ev'ry day, Why, when I'm asleep a dragon With his fiery tongue a-waggin' Whispers, "Sancho. Won't you please come out and play?""

Answer: Man of La Mancha

The song "A Little Gossip" is sung when Sancho visits Don Quixote while he lies in a coma. Until this point in the show, Sancho has stayed with Don Quixote but never wholeheartedly accepted him or his "mad" ways, and here it is shown that he has changed his thoughts.

As Don Quixote said, "When life itself seems lunatic, who knows where madness lies? Perhaps to be too practical is madness. To surrender dreams - this may be madness. To seek treasure where there is only trash. Too much sanity may be madness - and maddest of all: to see life as it is, and not as it ought to be!"
9. In which of these action-strategy video games would you play the dragon, collecting gold to gain more abilities?

Answer: Hoard

The game "Hoard", released in 2010 and published by Big Sandwich Games, Inc., was created for PlayStation and Microsoft Windows platforms. During play you can collect your treasure, kidnap princesses, and terrorize villages. The game can be played solo or against others.
10. One story that has captured folk's imagination over centuries is the tale of St. George and the Dragon. How does St. George travel to the lake where he will rescue the fair maid?

Answer: riding a horse

In the story of "St. George and the Dragon", George rescues a fair young maid and slays the evil dragon, saving all the local folk in the process. There are stained glass windows, sculptures, paintings, coins, music and more that have been created and keep the story alive in imaginations.
