Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which song written by Carole King and recorded by James Taylor is about being there for others, and being a friend for someone in need?

Answer: You've Got a Friend

Carole King included this song in her 1971 album Tapestry. The song never became a hit for King as she never recorded the song as a single, meanwhile it became a Billboard Hot 100 number one for James Taylor by July 1971.
2. The Book of Samuel in The Bible tells the story of two good friends. David was one of them, but who was the other?

Answer: Jonathan

The other name commonly associated with David is that of Goliath, the Philistine who he killed. Jonathan was also fighting against the Philistines and the two men formed a friendship, even though they were both rivals for the throne of Israel. Following the death of Jonathan, his crippled son, Mephibosheth, was taken into the court of King David to fulfil the pledge made to Jonathan.
3. Henry David Thoreau, perhaps best known for his time spent simply at Walden, gave us which of these friendship quotes?

Answer: The language of friendship is not words but meanings.

Many think of Thoreau as a loner, but in actual fact he was trying to live life to the full through the means of 'simple living'. "The only way to have a friend is to be one" was quoted from Ralph Waldo Emerson. Thomas Aquinas left us the memorable "There is nothing on this earth more to be prized than true friendship." Lastly, Oscar Wilde was quoted saying "True friends stab you in the front."
4. The British sitcom 'Just Good Friends' starred Paul Nicholas and Jan Francis as which of these characters?

Answer: Vince & Penny

The series ran from 1983 until 1986 and was written by John Sullivan, who was also responsible for 'Only Fools and Horses'. The story began with Vincent Pinner meeting Penny Warrender five years after he had left her standing at the altar. The show followed the pair's attempts to establish a friendly relationship, despite the differences between Penny's middle class background and Vince's rather more working class attitudes. Paul Nicholas has also appeared on the West End stage, most notably as the character of Rum Tum Tugger in 'Cats'.
5. Which single was recorded by Dionne Warwick, Stevie Wonder, Elton John and Gladys Knight in order to raise money for AIDS?

Answer: That's What Friends Are For

The song was originally recorded by Rod Stewart for the 1982 movie "Night Shift", and it was written by Burt Bacharach and Carole Bayer Sager. The version recorded by Dionne & Friends as it was called, won two Grammies for Best Pop Performance by A Duo Or Group With Vocal and Song Of The Year.
6. Which of these friends have been appearing in French comic books since 1959?

Answer: Asterix and Obelix

These very famous characters first appeared in the magazine "Pilote". They were originally written by René Goscinny and illustrated by Albert Uderzo. These satirical stories tell of Gaul warriors, Asterix and Obelix, as they fight against Roman occupation.
7. In the comic strip Peanuts who is Charlie Brown's best friend?

Answer: Linus Van Pelt

Linus is depicted as a philosopher who is usually not taken too seriously. He is always there to give Charlie Brown moral support, and is the only person who actually has a real say in Charlie Brown's actions.
8. The 1988 film 'Beaches' starred Barbara Hershey and which other actress, who also sang the theme tune, as her best friend?

Answer: Bette Midler

The film tells the story of two women who have been friends from childhood, despite leading very different lives. The serious illness, then death, of one of them leaves the other one re-evaluating her own life. The song from the film was 'Wind Beneath My Wings' which became a number one hit on the US Billboard Hot 100 and reached number five on the UK Singles Chart.
9. When A. A. Milne penned the "Winnie-the-Pooh" books, which of these characters were portrayed as best friends?

Answer: Winnie-the-Pooh and Piglet

These wonderful stories were first published in 1926 in the book "Winnie-the-Pooh". Many of the stories have been recreated in Walt Disney cartoons, bringing the charm of the Hundred Acre Wood to new generations.
10. Will Scarlet and Alan-a-Dale are among the friends and companions of which British hero?

Answer: Robin Hood

The legend of Robin Hood and his Merry Men is well established in British folklore, and may even have some basis in fact. Among the other names associated with him are his right hand man, Little John, the clergyman, Friar Tuck and Maid Marian. Their exploits in Sherwood Forest and battles with the Sheriff of Nottingham have been filmed numerous times, with the first movie being a silent from 1908 called 'Robin Hood and his Merry Men'. Among the actors to have portrayed him on the big screen are Errol Flynn, John Derek, Kevin Costner and Patrick Bergin.
