Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Comic Books: Which of the following super-hero teams belongs NOT in the Marvel Comics universe, but the DC Comics universe?

Answer: The Outsiders

The Outsiders, a team started up by Batman after he quit the Justice League of America in 1983 (real time), originally consisted of Black Lightning, Metamorpho, Katana, Halo, and Geo-Force -- as well as Batman himself, of course. The Avengers, The Defenders, and The Champions were all Marvel Comics teams.
2. Comic Books: In the DC universe, what planet does the dreaded villain Darkseid call home?

Answer: Apokolips

Apokolips, Darkseid, and all of the so-called "New Gods" were created by comics legend Jack Kirby in the mid-1970's.
3. Literature: Who wrote the novel "The Partner," in 1997?

Answer: John Grisham

Grisham, the author of many legal thrillers, is a consistent powerhouse on the "New York Times" Bestseller List.
4. Literature: Which of the following is the name of a novel written by science fiction legend Ray Bradbury?

Answer: "Dandelion Wine"

All titles listed are landmark SF novels: "The Stars My Destination" by Alfred Bester, "Foundation" by Isaac Asimov, "Childhood's End" by Arthur C. Clarke...and "Dandelion Wine" by Ray Bradbury.
5. Television: What was the title of the very first episode of the original "Star Trek" series ever shot?

Answer: "The Cage"

"The Cage," shot as the pilot for the original concept for the "Star Trek" series, never aired in its original format -- NBC rejected it in February 1965 for being "too cerebral," and demanded a major overhaul. The footage was later incorporated into "The Menagerie," a two-part episode whose first installment aired on 17 November 1966.
6. Music: Which woman was referred to, in song, as "pretty, pretty, pretty, pretty" by singer-songwriter Buddy Holly in 1957?

Answer: Peggy Sue

Holly, along with fellow musicians Ritchie Valens and The Big Bopper, died in a plane crash on February 3, 1959.
7. Movies: In which of the following films does actor Matthew Broderick portray a homosexual?

Answer: "Torch Song Trilogy"

Given the nature of the romantic relationships portrayed, Broderick clearly played a heterosexual in "Election", "Mrs. Parker", and "Project X."

In "Torch Song Trilogy" (1988), Broderick played the ill-fated lover of actor-writer Harvey Fierstein's character.
8. Movies: While Quentin Tarantino tends to get full credit for writing "Pulp Fiction" (1994), his frequent partner in writing and producing often gets overlooked as having written the vast majority of the segment of that film featuring Bruce Willis. What film was this underrated writer-producer's debut as a director?

Answer: "Killing Zoe"

Roger Avary, who wrote most of the segment of "Pulp Fiction" entitled "The Gold Watch," made his directing debut with "Killing Zoe" (1994), starring Eric Stoltz and Julie Delpy.
9. Movies: In "Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring," which of the following Middle Earth realms does the character played by Sean Astin call home?

Answer: The Shire

Astin plays Sam Gamgee, a Hobbit from The Shire (also known as Hobbiton).
10. Moment of truth. What celebrity is the common bond linking all of these clues?

Answer: Francis Ford Coppola

One of my favorite directors! (1) Coppola directed "The OUTSIDERS" (1983), based on the popular young adult novel by S.E. Hinton, as well as (2) "APOCALYPSE Now" (1979) and (3) "JOHN GRISHAM's The Rainmaker" (1997). (4) He also owns and operates a large and lucrative WINE company, whose products I recommend. (5) His nephew, Nicolas Coppola, is better known as superstar Nicolas CAGE. (6) Coppola also directed "PEGGY SUE Got Married" (1986), and is probably best known for directing (7) the "Godfather TRILOGY" in 1972, 1974, and 1990. (8) Coppola's production company, Zoetrope, is named after his daughter, ZOE. (9) His sister is Talia SHIRE, perhaps best known for playing Adrian in the "Rocky" films.
