Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In 1961, American actor, Paul Newman, was the lead in the classic flick, "The Hustler". In the movie, what was Newman's character's name?

Answer: Eddie Felson

Newman played "Fast" Eddie Felson. Prior to this movie, Newman was considered an 'OK' actor, but in this role, he shone and his career changed forever. Years later, Newman reprised the role as a more mature, experienced pool shark, in "The Color of Money" with Tom Cruise.

2. In 1986, what Australian golfer achieved the dubious distinction of leading all four "grand slam" events (The Masters, PGA Championship, US Open, and Open Championship/British Open) after 54 holes but winning only one of them, the British title?

Answer: Greg Norman

Norman, nicknamed "The Shark" both after the mighty fish who circle the reefs off his native Queensland and for his prodigious game fishing abilities, did end up leading the PGA in total prize money that year. He would go on to win the Open Championship/British Open again in 1993, capping a fine career marred only by his failure to win the major US titles despite contending nearly every year.

3. Sit-coms are notorious for staying around long after they should. According to urban legend, which of these TV show gave us the cliche for the exact moment when you realize that something has reached its peak and from that moment on it's all downhill?

Answer: Happy Days

The cliche is "jumped the shark". The urban legend as to how this saying came about was when a writer of "Happy Days" saw the scene of Fonzie overcoming his fear of sharks by jumping over a shark on water skis, that the show had gone on for a little too long and it was time to call it quits.

4. In Thomas Hardy's "Tess of the D'Urbervilles," whom does Tess marry?

Answer: Angel Clare

Angel marries Tess but abandons her when she tells him of her previous affair with Alec Stoke-D'Urberville. After Tess kills Alec, she and Angel are briefly reunited, until "the President of the Immortals, in Aeschylean phrase, ends his sport," and Tess is hanged.

5. Which peninsula is located in California?

Answer: Tiburon

Tiburon Peninsula is located in the San Francisco Bay area. It's a lovely former railroad town with shops and restaurants accessible by ferry. Tiburon is the name chosen for a Hyundai model in the 2000s. Otago Peninsula is located in New Zealand. The Old Mission, despite appearances to the contrary, is in Michigan on the lakes. The Fleurieu peninsula is located in South Australia.

6. Which of the following is a famous brand of teasmaid?

Answer: Goblin

The Goblin teasmaid was one of those much purchased but little used gifts, which woke you up in the morning with a hot cup of tea. If you do ever see a Freddy Krueger teasmaid (one of the wrong answers), I'd advise against buying it, as you won't wake up.

7. This college basketball coach won a national championship and the next year looked even better. That year he took arguably the greatest college basketball team of all time to the NCAA tournament undefeated but lost in the Final Four. He left his high profile position in disgrace yet was able to find a coaching job at his alma mater.

Answer: Jerry Tarkanian

You either love him or hate him. Some believe that Tark "the Shark" is a compassionate man who gives kids a chance to improve their lives. Others contend that he is a win at any cost coach that ignores serious moral deficiency in his players. In 30 years of coaching Long Beach St., UNLV, and Fresno St. his record is 778-202.

8. Australia's Elizabeth Kenny made one very noted contribution in the early decades of the 20th Century. Her pioneering work was adopted in many parts of the world. What was her profession?

Answer: Nurse

Elizabeth Kenny (1880 - 1952) was born in Australia and trained as an army nurse. In 1911 when she saw her first case of polio, she shunned normal treatment procedures and proceeded to use moist heat to help loosen muscles. The hotpacks also helped relieve pain and limbs were more easily stretched and strengthened. Kenny's work was finally recognised after lengthy battles with Australian authorities and she lectured in the United States to medical professionals all over the world.

9. The 1961 movie musical "West Side Story" (based on the Broadway musical) won ten Academy Awards, including Best Picture. Few of the movie's stars could cope successfully with the vocal demands of composer Leonard Bernstein's quasi-operatic score, and much of the singing in the film was dubbed. Which of these performers (who, by the way, took home one of the film's ten Oscars) was the only one to do all of his/her own singing?

Answer: George Chakiris (Bernardo)

Chakiris played the Hispanic gang leader Bernardo, whose sister Maria falls in love with Tony, a member of a rival white gang. A seasoned stage performer, Chakiris did all his own singing in the film, including the song "America" with Rita Moreno (Bernardo did not sing in this number in the original musical, but a new version was written for the film). Natalie Wood's singing was dubbed by Marni Nixon, who also dubbed for Audrey Hepburn in "My Fair Lady", Leslie Caron in "Gigi", and Deborah Kerr in "The King and I". Rita Moreno (Anita) did some of her own singing, but was unable to manage the song "A Boy Like That!"; she was dubbed by Betty Wand. Russ Tamblyn (Riff) was dubbed in the "Jet Song" by Tucker Smith. Also, the singing of Tony (Richard Beymer) was provided by Jimmy Bryant. George Chakiris won an Oscar for Best Supporting Actor for his portrayal of Bernardo. Chakiris had previously appeared onscreen in "Brigadoon", "Gentlemen Prefer Blondes" and "There's No Business like Show Business". Ironically, his film career declined after his Oscar win; he now appears primarily onstage and has achieved notable success as a nightclub performer. This question was produced by jouen58.
10. So, the Guild has presented its clues. We wish you luck in guessing the common bond.

Answer: sharks

Believe it or not, all of these questions relate to sharks in one way or another. "The Hustler" (#1) was a movie about pool sharks. Greg Norman and Jerry Tarkanian (#2 & #7) are nicknamed "The Shark". George Chakiris (#9) played the leader of the gang called the Sharks in "West Side Story". "Jumped the shark" (#3) is now a part of the American vernacular. Tiburon (#5) is Spanish for shark.

The angel shark (#4) has a flattened body and broad pectoral fins: it lives on the ocean floor and is not usually a hazard for humans.

There is a type of shark called a goblin shark (#6) - they're the ones that look a little bit like Gerard Depardieu. No one is sure how the nurse shark (#8) got its name; it might be because they make a sucking sound that is a little like the sound of a nursing baby.
