Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. One of my favorite Beatles songs is called 'Here Comes the Sun'. Which of the Fab Four was responsible for composing the lovely tune?

Answer: George Harrison

George Harrison was responsible for several wonderful songs during his career, including 'My Guitar Gently Weeps' and 'My Sweet Lord'. For more on his life and career I invite you to try my George Harrison quiz, to be found at the following URL:

2. Which of the following sun-related items would be useless without something called a 'gnomon'?

Answer: Sundial

Every sundial requires a gnomon, the piece that projects perpendicularly from the face of the dial, casting its shadow to indicate the time. The word 'gnomon' comes from the Greek word for 'indicator'.
3. What is the 'sun' name of a family of plants that captures insects, and is hence carnivorous?

Answer: Sundew

There are approximately 100 species of sundew, a plant with smallish flowers and round, flat leaves that bear sticky hair-like tendrils used to capture insects. The genus of the sundew family is 'drosera', Greek for 'dew'...clearly the nemesis of the fruit fly, aka 'drosophila' (dew lover).
4. Which 'sun' item would typically include fruit and nuts, and would be covered by a chocolate or other-flavored syrup?

Answer: Sundae

There are several theories about the derivation of the name 'sundae'. Etymologists believe that it is simply an alternate form of 'Sunday', and refers to the left over ice cream from the weekend, or that it refers to a dish that was sold only on Sundays. This shockingly important debate has still not been resolved.
5. Who directed the 1987 film 'Empire of the Sun', based in World War II China, about a young British boy surviving during the Japanese invasion?

Answer: Steven Spielberg

'Empire of the Sun' starred Christian Bale, John Malkovich and Miranda Richardson. It was filmed from the point of view of the young British boy who learns to survive by latching on with an American seaman. The title of the film refers to the Japanese empire.
6. There are several animals with 'sun' in their names, including the sun bear. What part of the world does the sun bear call home?

Answer: Southeast Asia

The nocturnal sun bear (aka the Malayan sun bear) is native to southeast Asia. This rather small bear has the taxonomic name is Helarctos malayanus. The sun bear is interestingly colored, typically having a brown to black coat with a light mark on its underside, from whence it gets its name.
7. Almost every ancient civilization came equipped with a sun god or goddess. Which of these was not among them?

Answer: Shiva (India)

Shiva was/is not the Hindu sun god, but rather is the destroyer god of that myth system. The other three gods listed were all the living embodiment of the sun for those respective ancient civilizations (Ra-Atum - Egypt, Amaterasu - Japan and Helios - Greece).
8. Which of these civilizations is associated with what we call the 'sun dance'?

Answer: North American Indian

A number of plains Indian tribes in North America perform the Sun Dance, a ritual that includes fasting and some self-torture as the participants danced around a pole (a symbolic link between the Earth and the universe). The Sun Dance was an annualized ritualistic dance in thanks for the sun's contribution to creating the universe. Some participants danced to the point of exhaustion and/or hallucination!
9. Which of these 'sun' items is not something that you could wear?

Answer: Sun bittern

At least I certainly hope you would not try to wear a sun bittern, it's a type of wading bird found in North America. A child wears a sun bonnet on his/her head to protect him/her from the sun, while a lady would wear the light, sleeveless dress called a sundress (sun dress). Any person could wear sunscreen (aka sun block or suntan lotion), a cream rubbed on the skin to protect one from ultraviolet rays.
10. From which book of the Bible do we get the phrase 'there is no new thing under the sun'?

Answer: Ecclesiastes

A more extended excerpt: 'The thing that hath been, it is that which shall be; and that which is done is that which shall be done: and there is no new thing under the sun.' Well I disagree, this quiz is a new thing, for example! Thank you for trying this quiz, I hope you enjoyed it and will try some of my other quizzes.
