quiz
Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. "Ground Control to Major Tom...": In David Bowie's song "Space Oddity", what were the first instructions given to the astronaut?

Answer: Take your protein pills and put your helmet on

"Space Oddity" was a track and single from David Bowie's eponymous 1969 album. The single was a UK Number 5, but despite being launched (sorry for that pun) to coincide with the Apollo 11 Mission, it ran out of propulsion at No 124 in the US charts.
2. Many young British boys were brought up on the adventures of the space traveller Dan Dare. In which comic did they first appear?

Answer: Eagle

'Dan Dare' first appeared in 'The Eagle' in 1950 and radio broadcasts were to follow. Original adventures were to appear in comic form until 1967. The main space ship for Dare and his dashing colleagues was Anastasia.
3. "Some people call me the space cowboy yeah Some call me the gangster of love Some people call me - Cause' I speak of the pompetous of love.." or so sang Steve Miller. Which of these names fills in the blank?

Answer: Maurice

Whatever else love may be, pompetous is not a real word. Miller did not invent it, though, he borrowed it from a song by The Medallions in 1954 "Let me whisper sweet words of pismodality
And discuss the pompitous of love". Unless anyone knows differently, I reckon "pismodality" is also a made-up word.
"The Joker" (sometimes mistakenly referred to as "Space Cowboy") was a Number 1 US hit in 1974 and in 1990 topped the UK charts after it was used in a commercial for a certain brand of jeans.
4. Which 1979 movie used the tagline "In space no one can hear you scream"?

Answer: Alien

Sigourney Weaver led the cast in the story of a space exploration ship that is invaded by an alien lifeform that kills the crew one by one (except Weaver, of course, otherwise there would have been no sequels).
The movie's most famous moment is probably when the monster suddenly busts out of the chest of the crew member played by John Hurt. All the movies mentioned were released in 1979.
5. "And I think it's gonna be a long long time..." Which piano man formerly noted for his colourful hairstyle and wide range of spectacles had a hit with "Rocket Man"?

Answer: Elton John

"Rocket Man" (lyrics by Bernie Taupin and music by Elton John) was a UK Number 2 in 1972 and reached number 6 in the US in that year. The British singer Kate Bush had a UK Number 12 with the song in 1991. In 2007,readers of the 'The Observer' newspaper deemed her version to be 'Greatest Cover of All Time'.
6. What was the name of the space ship whose crew aimed "to boldly go where no man has gone before"?

Answer: Enterprise

"Space: The final frontier
These are the voyages of the Starship, Enterprise
Its 5 year mission
To explore strange new worlds
To seek out new life and new civilizations
To boldly go where no man has gone before..." Surely one of the most famous spoken introduction in television history, and let's not worry about split infinitives...
The first "Star Trek" TV show aired in 1966 to a lukewarm reception. However, its reputation grew and it gathered viewers and spawned a number movies and TV sequels.
7. Na-Nu Na-Nu: What was the home planet of the space traveller who featured in the earthbound TV show "Mork and Mindy"?

Answer: Ork

"Mork and Mindy" was a spin-off based on the idea first seen in "Happy Days" of an alien, Mork, (played by Robin Williams, arriving on earth. Pam Dawber (Mindy) became his earthmate in the series that ran from 1972 to 1978.
"Na-Nu Na-Nu" was a catchphrase of Mork.
8. In 1978, a new space-travelling adventure series debuted on British television. What was the name of the ship that carried the freedom-loving "Blake's 7"?

Answer: Liberator

Fifty-two episodes of "Blake's 7" were shown in four seasons and the show developed cult status. These were the adventures of a bunch of free-thinking radicals who took control of a space ship after being sentenced to transportation to a space prison by a totalitarian earth Government. Which probably meant they then became free radicals!
(Red Dwarf was intended as, er, a red herring.)
9. In 1865, it was still quite an adventure to travel from one continent to another, but in that year a novelist suggested that humankind could travel "From The Earth To The Moon". Who wrote a book of that name?

Answer: Jules Verne

This was Verne's comedy story of an American who sets out to build a cannon that can fire a man to the moon. We read of his endeavours and the incredulity that they raise in some quarters. Eventually a projectile is launched with three men on board. Did they reach the moon? Why not read the book yourself to find out?
10. Which of these US urban areas officially adopted the nickname Space City?

Answer: Houston, Texas

By the early part of the 21st Century, Houston was the fourth-largest city in terms of population in the USA. Oil exploration and ancillary industries contributed to its commercial growth. The nickname came after NASA established its Manned Spacecraft Center in the city in 1961.
