Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What is the speed of radio waves?

Answer: 3 x 10^8 m/s

3 x 10^8 = the speed of light which is the same as the speed of radio waves. In the 1860s James Clerk Maxwell predicted the existence of radio waves. Nikola Tesla was the first person to actually discover radio waves but unfortunately he did not have the funds to prove it.

It was an Italian named Guglielmo Marconi who sent and received the first radio signal in Italy in 1895. The first successful transatlantic radiotelegraph message was in 1902.
2. I have a passion for the book called "Rattlers". Who is the correct author?

Answer: Joseph L. Gilmore

Rattlers is a fiction horror about rattlesnakes.

I used to own this book when I was younger and lent it to somebody but never had it returned. After years of not giving the book a second thought I recently went out and bought it again. It is a great book.
3. In which county will you find Stonehenge in the UK?

Answer: Wiltshire

Nobody knows exactly why Stonehenge was built. The best guess seems to be that the Stonehenge site was begun by the people of the late Neolithic period around 3000 BC.
4. On a recent holiday to Egypt we came across the scarab beetle. Its history of fertility fascinated us. What type of beetle is the scarab beetle?

Answer: Dung Beetle

The scarab beetle was believed by the Egypians to mean fertility and new life. We bought a few small scarabs for luck.
5. Do you know which country can take the credit for producing the triangle-shaped chocolate bar called Toblerone?

Answer: Switzerland

The Toblerone was patented in Switzerland in 1906 by Theodor Tobler.
"TOBLERONE" is a word play upon the names "Tobler" and "Torrone", the Italian word for honey-almond nougat.
6. The tallest structure in the world for many years was the CN Tower. Why is this tower considered a structure and not a building?

Answer: It does not have any floors

The CN Tower is found in Toronto, Canada. It is considered a structure rather than a building because it does not have any 'floors' as such.

Construction on the CN Tower began in 1973 and was completed in 1975. It cost $57 million to build. At a height of 553.33m (1,815 ft., 5 inches) it was the world's tallest structure from its construction in 1976 until 2009.
7. Where will you find a plimsoll line?

Answer: Hull of a boat or ship

The plimsoll line is situated on the side of the hull. If the plimsoll line sinks below the level of the water whilst being loaded, then the vessel has been overloaded.

This was something that I learned at school and have never forgotten.
8. The Isle of Man motorcycle races are held annually. The races are known as The Isle of Man TT. Do you know what TT is short for?

Answer: Tourist Trophy

The term Tourist Trophy was given after the first ever race on the Isle of Man in 1905.

The Isle of Man T.T. Motorcycle Races officially began in 1907. The Isle of Man is located in the middle of the Irish Sea.
9. When trying to quit smoking I was wearing NiQuitin CQ Patches and I was surprised to learn what substances are in them. Which of the following chemicals would you find in a patch?

Answer: All of these

Nicotine is the substance in tobacco which makes smoking addictive. The patches enable the smoker to still receive nicotine but through using the patches, the addictive nicotine is slowly eased out of the smoker's system. With the patches and will-power, the need to smoke a cigarette will eventually be eliminated.

They helped me, and I have not smoked a cigarette since the 17th January 2006.
10. My boxing hero when I was younger was the Irish boxer Barry McGuigan. Barry was born in 1961. I found out recently that he had a famous relative. Who is the famous relative and what were they famous for?

Answer: Barry's father represented Ireland in the Eurovision Song Contest

In 1968 Pat McGuigan represented Ireland in the Eurovision Song Contest and put Ireland into third place. Pat sang the song "A Chance of a Lifetime". Pat McGuigan was also in a band called The Big Four. Pat's pre-fight renditions of Danny Boy became legendary.
