Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. So let's ease into this with an easy popular children's riddle: What has four eyes but can't see?

Answer: Mississippi

Kids have been telling this one for as long as I remember. Mississippi not only has four S's but it also has four I's (eyes).

A potato has eyes but a couch potato, that is, someone who hangs out on the couch eating potato chips, watching TV, only has two eyes. A cactus may have needles, which have eyes, but the needles or thorns on a cactus have no holes like a sewing needle does. Maybe a Martian has four eyes, who knows, humanoid Martians are fictional. And besides the option was the whole planet Mars, not a Martian.
2. From the Skydeck of the Willis Tower skyscraper in Chicago you can see four states. Illinois of course is one of those states, and so are these others EXCEPT for which?

Answer: Ohio

The Willis Tower is the twelfth-tallest building in the world at 1,450 feet, the 2nd tallest in the Western Hemisphere. The twin antenna towers make it 1,730 feet high. It is 110 stories tall, and the Skydeck viewing platform is 1,353 feet above the ground. The building opened in 1973 and took three years to build.
3. What does the teasing insult mean when someone is called, "Hey Four Eyes, come here!"

Answer: They wear glasses

The phrase "four-eyes" was coined sometime in the late 1800s as a derogatory description of someone who wore glasses. The intention behind the insult itself isn't exactly defined aside simply pointing out that someone is wearing glasses. It's possible that it means the person has an extra set of eyes, ergo four eyes. Or, it could mean that person has two distinct sets of vision or it could mean that the person has "fore-eyes", that is, eyes in front of their eyes.
4. The comic book series "Four Eyes" takes place in 1930 Brooklyn. Enrico, a ten-year-old, is the title character who struggles to take care of his mother in America's Great Depression. He is even willing to work in a place he's been forbidden to go: The Ring of Fire, a training ground for dragons who battle for money and respect. Which comic book publisher puts out "Four Eyes"? (They're the third biggest and were founded in 1992).

Answer: Image Comics

Image Comics not only publishes "Four Eyes" but also "The Walking Dead" which has been adapted for television on the AMC network. I'm currently binge watching it, and I'm hooked solid. I've never screamed and yelled out loud so much watching a non-sports broadcast on TV! Image Comics also publishes "Kick-Ass" and "Kingsman: The Secret Service" both of which have also had successful movie adaptations
5. Lucky was the name of this animal born with two heads, having two noses, two mouths and yes...four eyes. She died in 2017 after only 108 days which actually broke the record for this type of animal born with two heads. What kind of animal was Lucky?

Answer: calf

Lucky, a two-headed calf, was born in September of 2016 and died 108 days later in Taylor County, Kentucky, on January 2, 2017. The condition of being born with more than the usual one head is called polycephaly, and most calves born this way live only a few days. The previous longevity record was 40 days until Lucky came along.
6. What is unusual about the Foureye butterflyfish?

Answer: It has a pair of false eyes

Also called the four-eyed butterflyfish, this fish is found only in the Atlantic Ocean. It feeds on invertebrates and worms and other such creatures, and it does not fly like a butterfly (nor sting like a bee). It does however, have a pair of big spots that very definitely resemble big eyes.

The spots are located at its tail, which serves to confuse predators. In addition to this confusion tactic this fish is not without defenses of its own--it has spines at the top of its back and it can turn and face its predator, lower its head and expose its spines to face the attacker.
7. From observation platforms in the Eilat Mountains of Israel, one can see four countries. Israel of course would be one of them, as well as each of the following EXCEPT for which?

Answer: Lebanon

The Eilat Mountains is a popular hiking destination for tourists. And indeed from various parts of the mountains and hotel balconies one can see Israel, Egypt, Jordan, and Saudi Arabia. But not Lebanon which is too far to the north. The city of Eilat is the very southernmost city in Israel, positioning it at a sort of triangle which makes it easier to be able to see multiple countries.
8. One of the biggest movie box office weekends in history was June 8-10, 1984 when you could see all of the following films in theatres in one day. Which of these quartets were all in theatres that weekend?

Answer: Ghostbusters, Gremlins, Star Trek III and Indiana Jones and Temple of Doom

Only "Ghostbusters", "Gremlins", "Star Trek III" and "Indiana Jones and Temple of Doom" were all in theatres during the same weekend, June 8-10, 1984. All the other movies listed as choices were from varying years from 1982 to 1987. Ironically, none of those four films in the correct answer was the overall top box office winner of that year. No, it was "Beverly Hills Cop" that made the most money in 1984. "Ghostbusters", "Gremlins", and "Indiana Jones and Temple of Doom" did finish in 2nd, 3rd, and 4th place for the year, in that order. "Star Trek III: The Search for Spock" finished in 9th place for the year, one of the biggest in Hollywood history.
9. Recently, scientists discovered the first jawed vertebrate that had four eyes; fossils of the extinct monitor lizard show that it had a third and fourth eye on the top of its head. What is the only existing vertebrate that uses four eyes today? Normally that is, not via polycephaly.

Answer: jawless lamprey

Those are all actual creatures, but only the jawless lamprey utilizes four eyes. Spiders have eight eyes, sometimes six. Dragonflies have the normal two eyes, and the colossal squid also has two, but they are the amongst the biggest darn eyes in the animal kingdom. According to "The Economist" (April 5, 2018) lampreys are the only existing vertebrate to have four eyes.

Their parietal eyes, aka third and fourth eyes, are also called pineal eyes.
10. Zaphod Beeblebrox is a two-headed science fiction character from a planet in near Betelgeuse who for a brief time was President of the galaxy, and was voted "Worst Dressed Sentient Being in the Known Universe" seven consecutive times. Where would you find Zaphod Beeblebrox?

Answer: The Hitchhiker's Guide To The Galaxy

Douglas Adams wrote this character into his hilarious iconic sci-fi comic novel "The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy". Sidebar: I have the distinction of having acted in the first stage adaptation of "The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy" performed in the United States, down in Washington DC.

There ya go. Anyway, Zaphod is a relative of one of the novel's protagonists, Ford Prefect. Zaphod was played by Mark Wing-Davey in the radio series and the TV adaptation. Sam Rockwell played him in the 2005 feature film.
