Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which of these greats of Western history warned us that 'flatterers are the most dangerous animals of all'?

Answer: Diogenes

Diogenes, the most famous ancient Greek Cynic philosopher, believed that a flatterer was more dangerous than a crow. Crows merely consume the carcasses of the dead, flatterers consume you while you are still alive. Beware of a person who throws about excessive flattery!
2. Which Roman Emperor hated civil war so much that he committed suicide rather than risk the lives of his men?

Answer: Otho

Otho was Roman emperor for a very short time, but gave way, via his suicide, to Vitellius. A friend to Nero, who also committed suicide, Otho came to power following the murder of Nero's successor, Galba. After a very short time on the throne, the general Vitellius was elevated by his troops to rival the claims of Otho and Otho committed suicide rather than risk the possibility of civil war. (This is one interpretation of his death, mind you...but it was widely believed by the Romans, who respected Otho much after his suicide death.)
3. Medusa was one of the three sisters of ancient Greek myth called the Gorgons. A mere look from her was enough to turn a person to stone. A yes or no question: Would Medusa be eisoptrophobic?

Answer: Yes

Naturally, her power would even work on herself, if a mirror or other reflecting surface were placed before her! An eisoptrophobic individual fears mirrors...an extremely reflective surface...
4. Which of these authors scored a literary success with his 'Parzival'?

Answer: Wolfram von Eschenbach

Eschenbach was a great German poet (perhaps the greatest of the medieval period) of the 12th and 13th centuries. His narrative poem 'Parzival' was the inspiration for Wagner's opera 'Parsifal', and remains a literary classic to this day.
5. The Biblical figure Saul of Tarsus was metaphysically transformed along the road to which city?

Answer: Damascus

While making his way to Damascus, Saul of Tarsus saw Christ and was commanded to preach the tenets of Christianity. He took the new name Paul at this time, and became the progenitor of the Christian religion. Thank you for trying this quiz...I hope you enjoyed it and learned something.
