Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What was the FIRST animal to be sent into orbit?

Answer: A dog

Laika is a Russian cosmo-dog. She was the first creature sent to orbit followed by Ham, the American chimp. I heard that they sent a jellyfish once but I'm not so sure.

Laika rode to orbit on "Sputnik II" on November 3, 1957. In tribute to this amazing quest, a lot of stamps were made honoring Laika. Countries like Albania, Poland and Romania made stamps with this cute dog's face in it.

Fruit flies are the first animal in space (thanks to Flossy50 for this information)
2. Who is the SECOND person to win "Time" Magazine's "Man of the Year" award?

Answer: Walter P. Chrysler

"Man of the Year" for 1928. Charles was the "Man of the Year" for 1927 making him the first, Owen D. Young became the third and Hugh Johnson as the seventh. Walter won the recognition because he improved massively from a mechanic to a big-time industrialist!

"Time"'s "Man of the Year" award has varied over time. Women, inanimate objects, and even us, won a spotlight as "Time"'s "Man of the Year"
3. What is the THIRD letter of the Hebrew alphabet?

Answer: Gimel

Daleth is the fourth letter. Kaf is the eleventh and lamed is the twelfth.

I don't really have a lot of information about this. However, I know "alphabet" came from the Greek letters but Hebrew's first letters are "aleph" and "beth" (how coincidental is that?) followed by gimel, daleth, he, vav, zayin, het, teth, yod, kaf, lamed, mem, nun, samech, ayin, peh, tzadik, kuf, resh, shin, and thaf in the correct order.
4. What song got the FOURTH spot on VH1's top video countdown for 2006?

Answer: "Sexyback" (Justin Timberlake)

"Buttons" by the Pussycat Dolls was number one in this countdown. "Call Me When You're Sober" lands as the tenth. "Move Along" is the fifteenth and "Walk Away" is the 30th.

The Best Hit Songs of 2006 is, of course, chosen by the people via text or email. Artists and performers with hit singles included in the top ten are:

The Pussycat Dolls (1)
Shakira (2)
Nickelback (3)
Justin Timberlake (4)
Dani California (5)
James Blunt (6)
Nelly Furtado (7)
The Fray (8)
Christina Aguilera (9); and
Evanescence (10).

Surprisingly, Natasha Bedingfield's "Unwritten" and any Black Eyed Peas song didn't make it to the list. The Pussycat Dolls also landed #22 for "Stickwitu". "Sexyback" is Justin Timberlake's only single that made it on the list.
5. What was the FIFTH most commonly used male/female name according to World English.org in the year 2003?

Answer: Daniel and Emma

Harry and Samuel were the 9th and 10th for boys in 2003. Jessica was the 4th for the girls. Hermione, John and Jane were not on the list. (The fact that John is not on the list wowed me!)
6. What is the SIXTH published book (novel, collection, nonfiction, or otherwise) authored by Stephen King and his aliases (or second personalities... as he would like to call them)?

Answer: The Stand

"Rage" was the 3rd.
"The Dead Zone" was the 6th novel published under his own name - Stephen King and 8th overall.
"Pet Sematary" was the 18th.

"The Stand" was published in 1978. "Night Shift" was also published in 1978. "Night Shift" was the first short story collection book authored by Stephen King.

"The Stand" is all about the world being infested with a deadly plague. Then, for those who survive, the evil separates from the good. Whoever prevails gets to rebuild the world. Pretty creepy.
7. What is the SEVENTH commandment on the Catholic version of "The Ten Commandments"?

Answer: You shall not steal.

"You shall not kill" is the fifth. "You shall not commit adultery" is the sixth. Lying is banned by the eighth commandment.

The Ten Commandments, however, are broken down by Jesus Christ (for Roman Catholics and Jesus-believing religions) into two great commandments: Love God and love your neighbors.
8. What was the EIGHTH most populous country in 2006?

Answer: Russia

Bangladesh is the seventh. Australia and Mali are sadly not on the list. China, India and United States are the top three on 2006. The top ten, in order, would include China, India, USA, Indonesia, Brazil, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Russia, Nigeria and Japan.

China and India didn't really surprise me considering their land area and its high reputation of having really dense populations. Mexico, however, shocked me for it was once on the top ten. This is so funny for I lived in the Philippines some time before and the place is very crowded... and it didn't made it to the top ten! What does this tell about the other seven in the list?
9. Who is the NINTH most corrupt leader of all time (by infoplease.com)?

Answer: Arnoldo Aleman (Nicaragua)

Mr. Abacha is the fourth while Mr. Estrada is the tenth. Nero is not on this list (I have no idea why... maybe he's not as corrupt as I think he is). Mohamed Suharto from Indonesia and Ferdinand Marcos of the Philippines topped the list. Most of the leaders on the list are from Africa. A few came from Asia, Europe and South America.
10. Who is the TENTH son of Jacob in the Bible?

Answer: Zebulun

Naphtali is the sixth. Dan is the fifth. Dinah is a girl, and technically, doesn't count as a "son" but she's the eleventh. Zebulon is Jacob's sixth son from Leah.

In my Bible, you can find this information in Genesis 29:31 - 30:24.
11. What is the ELEVENTH month in a Jewish calendar?

Answer: Shevat

The Jewish calendar starts with Nissan with thirty days. Nissan is equivalent to March and April and this is when Passover begins. It is followed by Iyar, Sivan, Tammuz, Av, Elul, Tishri, Heshvan, Kislev, Tevet, Shevat, Adar and Adar II. Each month is arranged in a pattern of 30-29-30-29 numbers of days. In leap years, Adar has 30 days. If it is not a leap year, it only has 29.
12. What is the title of the TWELFTH official James Bond movie?

Answer: For Your Eyes Only

"The Spy Who Loved Me" was the tenth while "Octopussy" was the thirteenth. "GoldenEye" was the seventeenth. Roger Moore plays James Bond in "For Your Eyes Only". It also featured Carole Bouquet as Melina Havelock and Topol as Milos Columbo. In my opinion, Roger Moore was a good 007 on this film.
13. What is the THIRTEENTH element of the periodic table (by atomic number)?

Answer: Aluminum

Magnesium is the 12th.
Calcium is the 20th.
Zinc is the 30th.

The atomic number of an element corresponds with the number of protons (and most of the time, electrons) of the element. It is just so fun that each element has their own unique atomic number! I mean, no two elements have the same atomic number.
14. What is the FOURTEENTH letter of the Greek alphabet?

Answer: Xi

Kappa is the 10th.
Omicron is the 15th.
Pi is the 16th.

Alpha and beta is where the term "alphabet" came from. These are the first two letters of the Greek alphabet. Greek letters had been turned into metaphors and allusions over time. Iota is something small. Pi is a mathematical terminating value. Gamma is a ray. Delta is a military code, along with alpha. "Alpha and omega" means beginning and end.
15. Who is the FIFTEENTH emperor of Rome?

Answer: Antoninus Pius

Hadrian was the 14th.
Aurelius was the 17th.
Macrinus was the 24th.

I never heard of this guy but the Roman empire is filled with controversial and memorable emperors. Octavian, a.k.a. Augustus is the first Roman emperor. He was followed on by various emperors like the corrupt Nero and Caligula; Constantine, the Christian; and Antoninus Pius. Never heard anything special about him though.
16. Who is the SIXTEENTH Roman Catholic pope?

Answer: St. Callistus I

St. Soter was the 12th pope.
St. Victor I was the 14th.
St. Pontain was the 18th.

Very little is known about St. Callistus I and most of the historian's knowledge about him is from his enemies, so I won't divulge into any of them. However, it is quite certain that unlike some popes, St. Callistus I is faithful to God and his religion and he isn't a corrupt and money-laundering leader.
17. What is the title of the SEVENTEENTH Disney-produced (not presented) purely-animated film?

Answer: One Hundred and One Dalmatians

"Alice in Wonderland" is the 13th.
"The Sword in the Stone" is the 18th.
"Robin Hood" is the 21st.

"One Hundred and One Dalmatians" featured the famous cruel villain named Cruella... Cruella de Ville. Her main goal is to turn 99 dalmatian puppies into a fur coat, but the heroes, Pongo and Perdita, also dalmatian dogs, go and brave the countryside and rescue them.
18. What is the title of the EIGHTEENTH episode of "Spongebob Squarepants" according to TVguide.com (including specials)?

Answer: Texas

"Texas" is number 18 along with "Walking Small."

"Suds" is fifteenth with "Sleepy Time"
"Hooky" is twentieth with "Mermaidman and Barnacleboy II"
"Arrgh!" is the seventeenth with "Rock Bottom"

In "Texas", Sandy, the squirrel gets homesick and wants to go to Texas. For those who don't watch, Sandy is a squirrel living in a tree dome underwater inventing ridiculous stuff. Spongebob and his best friend, Patrick, didn't want her to go so they decided (on their weirdest definition of "decided") to bring Texas to Sandy! Of course, the plan didn't work at first but since Sandy is a contracted character, she ended up staying.
19. What is the NINETEENTH commonly used English word according to World English.org?

Answer: his

I is the 18th.
But is the 31st.
Why is the 178th!

Why? I have no idea...

The commonly used words include "the" obviously. It is THE most used English word.
Other words that came in top ten are : of, to, and, a, in, is, it, you and that.
20. Who is the TWENTIETH winner of the Nobel Price for literature?

Answer: Knut Hamsun

Jacinto was the 22nd.
Henri was the 27th.
T.S. was the 48th.

Knut won his Nobel Prize for writing "Growth of the Soil" in 1920.
21. What is the title of the TWENTY-FIRST movie of Leonardo diCaprio (as an actor) according to imdb.com?

Answer: Blood Diamond

"Gangs of New York" is the 17th.
"The Aviator" is the 19th.
"The Departed" is the 20th.

Leonardo stars in this film as a diamond smuggler. The movie premiered in 2006.
22. What is the TWENTY-SECOND letter of the longest word in the English language according to the Oxford Dictionaries? (Invented words by writers are counted)

Answer: C

Aequeosalinocalcalinoceraceoaluminosocupreovitriolic. According to AskOxford.com, this is mentioned in the Guinness Book of World Records attributed to Dr. Edward Strother. The other letters are (about the) 22nd letter on the longest words of the English language.
23. What is the TWENTY-THIRD state of the United States (terms of joining)?

Answer: Maine

Alabama was the 22nd.
Texas was the 28th.
Wyoming was the 44th.

Maine became a part of the Union in 1820s and became the 23rd state. Maine is the largest New England state up until now. It is also known as the "Pine Tree State" for it is very bushy and forestry.
24. What is the TWENTY-FOURTH word in the national anthem, "The Star-Spangled Banner"?

Answer: and

Stripes is the 23rd.
Bright is the 25th.
Stars is the 26th.

"The Star-Spangled Banner" was written by Francis Scott Key and is the national anthem of the USA.
25. What is the TWENTY-FIFTH book of the KJV "Holy Bible"?

Answer: Lamentations

Isaiah is the 23rd.
Jeremiah is the 24th.
Ezekiel is the 26th.

Lamentations along with Ezekiel, Isaiah and Jeremiah are several books of the Old Testament in a Bible (not really sure about a Jewish bible, considering how they also believe in the Old Testament but not the New Testament).

Hope you enjoyed my second quiz... thanks for taking it.
