Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Freddie Mercury had an unforgettable voice and stage presence. His career was brilliant although he had which of these conditions?

Answer: Mesiodens

Freddie Mercury (1946-1991) became well known for his voice, his presence on stage and for his smile that drew attention, due to his dental protrusion, which occurred due to his condition of mesiodens. Supernumerary teeth or mesiodens, are teeth that appear in addition to the regular number of teeth. Freddie Mercury had four extra incisors right behind normal incisors, which pushed forward his front teeth, causing malocclusion.

Although he was bullied and perhaps uncomfortable with his teeth, he always refused to get his teeth fixed, perhaps fearing that the surgery would negatively affect his singing ability.
2. When African-American Elizabeth Jennings Graham, in 1854, was forcibly removed from a segregated street car in New York City, she appealed to the court. Who was her defense attorney?

Answer: Chester A. Arthur, future U.S. president

Elizabeth Jennings Graham (1827-1901) was an African-American teacher and human rights advocate. In July 1854, as she was late for church service where she was the organist, she took the street car of the Third Avenue Railroad Company, which provided segregated service. The conductor ordered her to get out and tried to force her out.

The incident had great repercussions in the black community and in the local and national press. On her behalf, her father filed a lawsuit against the conductor and against the company. In court she was represented by the law firm of Culver, Parker and Arthur and her case was handled by junior partner Chester A. Arthur, 24 years old at the time, future 21st U.S. president. In 1855, the court ruled in Jennings' favor by ordering the company to pay the costs of the lawsuit and a sum of money to Jennings.
3. Which of the philosophers mentioned was the great purveyor of the "theory of spontaneous generation"?

Answer: Aristotle

For a long time spontaneous generation was believed possible. Aristotle, based on the theories of other thinkers and his own observations, was a great purveyor of this idea. Only with the invention of the microscope and its improvements, together with the adoption of the scientific method, was this theory tested and proved wrong.
4. In which country was UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson born?

Answer: United States

Alexander Boris de Pfeffel Johnson, known as Boris Johnson, was born on June 19, 1964 on the Upper East Side of Manhattan, New York, United States. His English parents Stanley Johnson and Charlotte Fawcett moved to the United States in 1963 and in the following year, their first child Boris was born, who acquired dual citizenship.

Although he lived only a few years in the United States, Boris Johnson maintained dual US/British citizenship for more than 50 years. In the 2010s, Boris Johnson was asked by the American Internal Revenue Service to pay taxes for financial operations he had carried out in the UK. Initially he declared that he would not pay these taxes, but later his spokesperson declared that the dues were even. Boris Johnson then renounced his American citizenship, thus giving up the chance to run for president of the United States.
5. An Ukrainian friend gave my husband a vyshyvanka. What can my husband do with the gift?

Answer: Wear it

This embroidery has been around since the 5th century B.C. and is globally recognized for its artistic qualities. The vyshyvanka is a garment used as a talisman, often believed to increase the ability to survive adverse situations for those who wear it.
6. Clyde Tombaugh was an American astronomer who discovered the "planet" Pluto and other asteroids. When he died he was cremated. Where were part of his ashes placed?

Answer: Aboard the New Horizon spacecraft

Clyde William Tombaugh (1906-1997) was an American astronomer who in 1930 discovered Pluto and many other asteroids. He began his career building telescopes on his own and sending information to the Lowell Observatory, Arizona, until he was invited to work at the institution in 1929.

When he died he was cremated and some of his ashes and a message about him were placed aboard the New Horizons spacecraft, an interplanetary space probe, launched in 2006 as part of NASA's New Frontiers program, with the primary mission of studying the Pluto system.

8. In 1928, American travel writer and journalist Richard Halliburton performed a historic event for which he is remembered to this day. What is this historic event?

Answer: He swam along the Panama Canal

American Richard Halliburton (1900-1939) was a lecturer, travel writer and adventurer who from 1925 to 1938 enchanted many with his adventures. In 1928, he performed his best-known feature: he made the full transit of the Panama Canal.

He swam the 48 mile length of the Panama Canal, in 50 hours over 10 days. Although he was not the fastest swimmer he was the first to swim the 3 sets of locks. Halliburton's passage through the canal required as much mechanical work as a large ship. What's more, the fee to be paid for crossing the canal is based on tonnage. As Halliburton weighed about 150 pounds, he paid just 36 cents in 1928, the lowest rate paid in the history of the canal.

Answer: The new space telescope

The James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) was developed by NASA in collaboration with the Canadian Space Agency (CSA) and the European Space Agency (ESA) with the aim of performing infrared astronomy, to replace the Hubble Space Telescope, whose technology is already outdated in carrying out strategic space missions.

The JWST was launched on December 25, 2021 from Kourou, French Guiana for a mission expected to last 20 years.
10. When my uncle passed away he left me a collection of netsukes in his will. What did I inherit?

Answer: A collection of small Japanese art objects

Netsukes initially were a type of toggle carved in wood or ivory, attached to a small medicine box or bag which dangled from the obi of a man's traditional clothing. As only samurai could wear jewelry, wealthy Japanese merchants began to use netsukes as an adornment and make them with precious materials.

Although netsukes are now out of fashion as a clothing accessory, they are highly valued as art objects and collectibles. The novel "The Hare with Amber Eyes: A Hidden Inheritance" (2010) by the British ceramist Edmund de Waal, tells the story of his family's priceless netsuke collection that was saved from the Nazis.
