Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. If you had a saw horse, would you:

Answer: Cut timber on it

Yes. Well.... No, not SORE, SAW. It's a sort of framework for holding logs to be sawed.
2. The Pony Express could carry mail across 2000 miles of America in:

Answer: 10 days

2 days is quite good going now! 15 miles at full gallop, then change to a fresh pony and off again. I hope the ponies got a real rest before being sent out again. You'd never get away with it nowadays.
3. The first known ancestor of the horse is:

Answer: Hyracotherium

Those aardvarks keep getting in! Fred??? Hyracotherium used to be called Eohippus (Dawn Horse) and wasn't really suitable for riding unless you're a pixy. About the size of a poodle or a fox.
4. There were an estimated (that's a fancy way of saying guess) 30,000 horses in Victorian London. Would this cause a pollution and waste disposal problem?

Answer: Yes

'My aunt puts horse manure on her rhubarb.' 'I prefer custard on mine.' (If this is your first Baloo55th quiz - beware! The jokes can get worse. Oh, yes, they can!)
5. Dorothy and her friends in Oz met up with an unusual equine (that's educated talk for horse) in the movie. Was it a:

Answer: Horse of a different colour

Very well done in the Judy Garland film. Palominos are so beautiful, aren't they, though?
6. Alexander the Great (what do you mean - who?) had a horse called:

Answer: Bucephalus

Means ox head because he had a head like an ox. Or sort of. Don't think they really meant with big horns. Philip was Alexander's father. Pegasus was the winged horse of mythology. 'Samson Agonistes' is a poetic work by John Milton and nothing to do with it at all. Just sounded good.
7. Przewalski's Horse was:

Answer: The last truly wild horse

I wish I hadn't asked this one. Try typing that name! (Pronounced something like pzhe-val-ski.) Used to be wild on the prairie, sorry, the steppes, of Central Asia (the Horse, not the Major). There wasn't a Major thingy so far as I know. OK, prove me wrong!
8. All the thoroughbred horses in racing are descended from three Arab stallions.

Answer: True

The Byerley Turk, The Darley and The Godolphin.
9. The largest breed of heavy horse is:

Answer: The Shire

Shetland? Come on! The Mack is a truck, of course. Bigger than a Shire, but it doesn't count because it isn't a horse. OK?
10. A skewbald horse - which description is true?

Answer: Large patches of white with the rest any other colour than black

Well, only two real choices there... The one with black is a piebald - pie as in magpie, would you believe, or in the Pied Piper.
11. A sea horse is:

Answer: A very small sort of horse-headed fishy thing

The easy part of composing a quiz is finding the right answers. The hard part, apart from all the typing, is thinking up idiotic things that look partly convincing. Actually, I found out after I'd thought this one up that the Shetland Pony really does graze on seaweed in bad winters.

But it's not called a sea horse, so there! I invented the Palimoto Archipelago. Would make a good setting for a story - HANDS OFF! I thought of it first!
12. Where is the Spanish Riding School?

Answer: Vienna

Looks like something off a cosmetic company label, that. Originally set up with horses from Spain when there was a connection between the royals of Spain and Austria. The ones they use are now called Lipizzaners. I left Madrid out as a possible just in case someone has a three horse Riding School somewhere in the suburbs...
13. Dressage involves:

Answer: A skilled display of horse handling and training

I feel quite proud of the Lord of the Manor one... Dressage is highly skilled manoeuvring of a horse around an intricate course with almost dance movements coming into it. Changing your clothes at a trot is NOT recommended unless you work in a circus. There are fancy dress competitions at some gymkhanas and horse shows.
14. There are four basic gaits of a horse. Which of these is right?

Answer: Walk, trot, canter, gallop

Panic... Been there... OK, there are other gaits, but these are the BASIC ones. If you've got a pacer or stepper, OK. Not every horse will do these - but they'll ALL do the ones I've listed here. Unless they've got three legs...
15. All breeds of horse are bigger than ponies.

Answer: False

The Falabella (originating in Argentina) is an 'orse less than 7.2 hands high (or low) while the Shetland is around 9.2. Hope you learned something from this quiz. I did. If you didn't, I hope it was because you already knew it all...
