Harvey Nichols opened its first store outside London, in the Victoria Quarter in Leeds in 1996. Harvey Nichols has stores also located in Bristol, Dublin, Manchester, Edinburgh and Birmingham.

Answer: Thackray Medical Museum

The Thackray Medical Museum opened in 1997 and is located in the former Leeds Union Workhouse, in the grounds of St. James's Hospital. It includes a reproduction of a Victorian slum, including the smells, and visitors can follow the lives and treatments of eight Victorian characters of various ages.

Elland Road has been the home of Leeds United AFC, since it was founded in 1919. There is a statue of former player and team captain, Billy Bremner, who sadly passed away in 1997, erected outside the ground. The statue was unveiled on 7th August 1999.

Leeds Town Hall was opened by Queen Victoria on 7th September 1858. It is located on the Headrow in Leeds, this road was formerly known as Park Lane. Cuthbert Broderick, who designed the Town Hall was also responsible for the design of the Corn Exchange in Leeds.

Temple Newsam house and grounds, was bought by Leeds City Council in 1922 from Lord Halifax. The estate was acquired by the Knights Templar in the 12th century, and it is named after them. Lord Darnley, was born at Temple Newsam on 7th December 1545, he is also the father of James I.

The Ark Royal was adopted by the City of Leeds on 4th November 1941 and was sunk some ten days later. In the weeks following its sinking, the citizens of Leeds raised 9.3 million pounds for a new ship to be built. The Ark Royal was granted the Freedom of Leeds in 1973.

9. What are the natives of Leeds known as?

Answer: Loiners

Natives of Leeds are known as Loiners. The exact origin of this term is not known. There are three main theories as to how/where this term originated:

1. In the 8th century Leeds was known as Loidis and the term "Loiner" could be a derivative of this.
2. In the 19th century there were a lot of alleyways and yards in the Briggate area of Leeds, the back entrances to premises were known as "Low ins" or "Loins", hence the term "Loiner".
3. Again in the Briggate area, there were many lanes, which were colloquially pronounced "Loins". It is reputed that people gathered in these "loins" to tittle tattle, hence the term "Loiners".
10. Lotherton Hall is situated on the outskirts of Leeds in Aberford. What is it well known for?

Answer: Bird garden

Lotherton Hall was purchased by the Gascoigne family in 1825. In 1968 public access was granted to the City of Leeds and in 1970, following the death of Frederick Gascoigne's son in 1970, the estate was given to the City of Leeds. The bird garden, which is the home to many rare breeds, was opened in the 1970s.

The hall was previously the home Neville family, including the former Archbishop of York, George Neville, who was born in 1432. The estate also features a 12th century chapel.
