Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Are You Smarter than a _____th Grader?

Answer: 5

"Are You Smarter than a 5th Grader?" debuted in the United States in 2007 and quickly became an international phenomena. Over fifty countries have had a version of the format in their own languages. Canada, for instance, had two versions, one in English and one in French.

The contestants answer questions that a fifth grader should know. A panel of fifth graders is used in various ways to assist the contestant.
2. Commandments

Answer: 10

In the Bible, Moses carried the stone etched tablets of commandments from God down from Mt. Sinai. These are considered the basis for both Jewish and Christian law.
3. Spielberg's "Ready Player _____"

Answer: 1

"Ready Player One" is a 2011 science fiction novel by Ernest Cline that was adapted to the screen by Steven Spielberg in 2018. A billionaire dies and leaves his fortune to whatever computer hacker can solve the puzzle he left behind. On a four point scale the novel gets a 4.0 and the film a 3.0 from me.

The film gets a little bogged down with special effects and neglects the subtleties of the book.
4. Stitch in time, saves ____

Answer: 9

"A stitch in time saves nine" is an old adage. It has little to do with sewing. The general interpretation is if you are careful in your procedures, there will be fewer mistakes to correct later. My quiz editors tell me this from time to time.
5. Sex

Answer: 6

"Sex" is the Latin word for six. What were you thinking?
6. Karate virtues

Answer: 8

In karate, the martial art, the virtues are respect, honesty, courage, integrity, humility, compassion, patience, and peacefulness.
7. Deuce

Answer: 2

A deuce is applied to the playing card 2, pips on a die, a tie in tennis, and a two point shot in basketball.
8. Sherlock's sign

Answer: 4

Arthur Conan Doyle's second Sherlock Holmes novel is "The Sign of the Four"(1888). It has a complex plot involving service in India, the Indian Rebellion of 1857, a stolen treasure, and a secret pact among four convicts. It presents Holmes' drug habit and attempts to humanize him more.
9. Neutral pH value

Answer: 7

pH means the potential of hydrogen. It helps to discriminate between acids and bases. Seven is the neutral point. For instance, a drain cleaner is a base with a pH value of +14; battery fluid is a 0 (zero) acid; blood is a 7 (neutral) neither acid or base.
10. Richard without an equus

Answer: 3

According to Shakespeare, Richard III cried "A horse, a horse! My kingdom for a horse!" Richard is losing the battle with Richmond for control of the throne.
