Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. You come into work. For some reason, people are avoiding eye contact with you. Groups of people in conversations go silent as you pass them by. In general, people are avoiding you. According to the survey, what is going on?

Answer: They know that you are about to be laid off or fired.

People generally become withdrawn and evasive of a person who is going to be laid off; they can't pretend that everything is going to be all right. If it were a staff meeting or something that is going to happen to an entire department, people tend to become talkative and seek solace from each other. (NB-This answer and all the others come from a 2003 Department of Labor survey.)
2. According to a recent industry survey, 91% of the participants indicated that they engage in this activity in the office, but never do it outside the office. What is this activity?

Answer: Gambling

People who never gamble will participate in office pools (Super Bowl, NCAA, horse racing, etc.) much more frequently than the other activities. They will also kick in for lottery tickets which are legal but still gambling.
3. What activity have office workers said they love to do at home, but dread to do on the job?

Answer: Opening E-mail/answering the phone

Most respondents said that office E-mail is usually negative. Others believe a full E-mail box indicates a lot of work to come. The constantly ringing phone is perceived as just more bad news coming in. Why? Because these respondents are rarely given constructive criticism or positive reinforcement.
4. You feel as though your blood pressure has spiked about 50 points, top and bottom numbers. You've broken out in a mild sweat. Your palms are clammy and your jaw clenches momentarily. According to the survey, what's just happened?

Answer: Any one of these

Respondents indicated that any and all of these symptoms occur when the probability of bad news is forthcoming, whether in the boss' office or at an emergency meeting. And we've all experienced that frustrating rage when the computer crashes.
5. Most people surveyed said that they did not consider taking home minor office supplies--pens, stickies, floppy disks--to be a crime. Yet, technically, it is theft. How do employees justify committing this crime that they normally wouldn't commit?

Answer: All of these

Most employees claimed that this pilfering is a victimless crime. They become self-appointed Robin Hoods, working for themselves.
6. Violence in the workplace is an extreme aberrant behavior but, sadly, it happens all too often. According to the survey, some of the warning signs of an employee going over the edge are: preoccupation with discussions of murder or suicide; sudden seclusion; preoccupation with weapons; intentional damage to company property; and frequent belligerence with co-workers. What should you do if you've noticed this type of behavior in a co-worker?

Answer: Notify your supervisor or human resources immediately

As a co-worker, NEVER try to fix the situation yourself--especially with alcohol. Your good intentions may actually exacerbate the problem or trigger the violence. Most supervisors and human resources people are trained to react to these volatile situations.
7. Office workers tend to curse more in the public surroundings of their office than in the privacy of their homes.

Answer: True

People tend to be more frustrated in the office than at home. Also, participants indicated that if there were children in the house, they try not be a bad influence on them.
8. While we're on the subject, percentage-wise, who curses more at the work place as opposed to at home?

Answer: It is equal

It seems that the negative office environment is an equal opportunity employer. The percentage of men and women who responded that they curse more in the office than at home was equal.
9. To be fair, there are those who are happy at their jobs, but which of the following groups are the most satisfied?

Answer: Those at the bottom of the corporate ladder

Many of those at the bottom of the ladder expressed the freedom to "just do my job and collect my check." They also anticipate that, if they were so inclined, they could get a promotion. The next most satisfied group was the group at the top of the ladder but many of them complained about long hours and the awesome responsibilities. Middle managers fared the worst.

They complained of long hours and the responsibilities, too. But because they wanted to be in leadership roles, they feel they have little room for promotion because the elite executive level is difficult to reach.
10. One thing that irritated most respondents was the seemingly annual "team building", "team skills", "performance redesign", "workforce team empowerment" seminars. They sound okay, but why did most respondents hate them?

Answer: All of these

Having been through several of these ridiculous seminars myself, I agree with those respondents who resent them. The skills tend to deteriorate from lack of use. And I agree with the one respondent who replied, "With the money they spent on getting trainers and consultants, they could have given us bigger bonuses!" Workers of the world unite!
