Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What mystical tropical island is ruled by Bloody Mary according to Rodgers and Hammerstein's 1949 musical "South Pacific"?

Answer: Bali Ha'i

Bali Ha'i stands for every imaginary island which can be seen at the horizon but cannot be reached. James A. Michener, on whose "Tales of the South Pacific" the musical was built, was inspired by a real island when he created Bali Ha'i. During WWII he was stationed on Espiritu Santo and could see the island of Ambae on the horizon. This is located in modern Vanatu.
2. In the "Angry Birds" franchise, where do the birds reside?

Answer: Piggy Island

"Angry Birds" began as a video game which then grew to become a major animated motion picture in 2016. The birds share Piggy Island with the Bad Piggies, intent on stealing all their eggs. The precise location of Piggy Island is unknown. There is a pig-shaped mountain in the center of the island. Close comparative study reveals that the fictional Piggy Island shares many points of commonality with the real island of Greater Inaqua in the Caribbean Sea.
3. A young English teacher accepts a position on a small Greek Island in John Fowles' "The Magus" (1965). What is the name of the island?

Answer: Fraxos or Phraxos

In "The Magus," young Nicholas Urfe leaves one teaching job in Britain to take another at the Lord Byron School on a small and beautiful island called Fraxos or Phraxos. The author John Fowles had himself taught English for two years at the Anargyrios School on the Greek island of Spetses. The novel has been called postmodern, which means parts are hard to understand.
4. In the 1963 John Wayne movie "Donovan's Reef," what was the name of the island on which Michael "Guns" Donovan's bar was located?

Answer: Haleakaloha

The events of "Donovan's Reef" take place on a fictional island in French Polynesia named Haleakaloha. The meaning of this place name could be inferred from the Hawaiian language: Home of Laughter and Love. The name of the fictitious island sounds a bit like the name of the major volcano on Maui: Haleakala (which means House of the Sun). The movie was filmed on the Hawaiian island of Kauai.
5. Skull Island appears in which series of movies, books, comics, adventure parks and the like?

Answer: King Kong

Although the backstory varies, King Kong is generally depicted as being from Skull Island. In a few other instances, he is said to be from Kong Island. Skull Island is not firmly located but the original 1933 movie puts it off the coast of Sumatra, Indonesia. Another puts it in the Bermuda Triangle but that is an aberration.
6. To what remote island on the west coast of Ireland are Father Ted, Father Dougal and Father Jack exiled by Bishop Len Brennan in the British sitcom?

Answer: Craggy Island

The comedy series "Father Ted" (1995-1998) depicted the life of three Roman Catholic priests sent away to Craggy Island for their misdeeds, living in a parish house with their housekeeper Mrs. Doyle who keeps them provided with tea. This programme was one of the most successful in the history of Irish television. The Irish rock musician Bono asked to make an appearance in one of the episodes.
7. On what island was the original "Jurassic Park" (1993) and the rebuilt park in "Jurassic World" (2015) located?

Answer: Isla Nublar

InGen owned two islands -- Isla Nublar and Isla Sorna -- on which experiments to clone living dinosaurs from prehistoric DNA were carried out. The first park was to be located on Isla Nublar but failed because of containment breach. These islands are located off the west coast of Costa Rica. The end of the rebuilt Isla Nublar site was also due to containment failure.
8. In Ian Fleming's 1958 novel and the 1962 movie based on it, where was the secret lair of Doctor No?

Answer: Crab Key

"Doctor No" was the sixth James Bond novel but the first James Bond film, bringing together the team of Harry Saltzman and Albert R. Broccoli who would produce the franchise until 1975. Fleming wrote the book in Jamaica and the film was shot in Jamaica. Doctor No, who was Chinese, was portrayed by Joseph Wiseman, who was a Canadian Jew, in one of many instances where white actors were cast in ethnic roles. Doctor No owns Crab Key, an island on which a bauxite mine is located, which provides cover for his more nefarious activities.
9. James Michener invented an Aleutian island to tell part of his story in the novel "Alaska" (1988). What is the name of that island?

Answer: Lapak

Michener imagines a story within which Russian trappers captured Aleut trappers on Lapak Island and compelled them to come away to hunt sea otter. The Aleut women, left to survive as best they could, learned how to take a whale using kayak and harpoon.
10. Which Beach Boys song was written for the 1988 Tom Cruise movie "Cocktail"?

Answer: Kokomo

"Kokomo" is a song about a couple escaping to a fictitious island in the Florida Keys called Kokomo. There are real places called Kokomo: a town in Indiana, a town in Arkansas, a town in Hawaii. Several Florida resorts borrowed the name after the song was a success. The lyrics suggest that Kokomo is on a par with other well-known Caribbean resort areas: "Aruba, Jamaica, oh I want to take you to Bermuda, Bahama, come on pretty mama. Key Largo, Montego Bay, why don't we go?"
