Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What is the largest living marsupial?

Answer: Kangaroo

The kangaroo (along with the emu) appears on the Australian coat of arms, and the animal is inextricably linked to that country--Australian Aborigines have a long history of using the creatures for meat and fur. The largest species, the Red Kangaroo (Macropus rufus) can reach nearly seven feet in height and weigh 200 pounds.
2. On Showtime's "Dexter" (and in the series of books starring the likable serial killer, written by Jeff Lindsay), what is Dexter's last name?

Answer: Morgan

Dexter Morgan is a blood-spatter technician for the Miami police department and, yes, a serial killer. Orphaned at a young age and raised by a policeman who saw what he was turning into, he was taught to kill only those who were murderers or other irredeemable criminals themselves.

The television show on Dec 13, 2009 drew 2.6 million viewers, making it the most popular episode of any Showtime original drama at the time. Dexter Morgan is played by Michael C. Hall.
3. Umar Farouk Abdulmutallab was arrested on Christmas Day 2009 for attempting to bomb Northwest Airlines Flight 253, traveling from Amsterdam to Detroit. Where did he conceal the plastic explosives he tried to detonate?

Answer: Underpants

Abdulmutallab sustained what had to be some very painful wounds from his attempt to light the bomb. Passengers on the flight noticed him trying to ignite the explosives and restrained him, and the flight landed safely, without further incident. Previously, in December of 2001, terrorist Richard Reid had attempted the same type of attack, with the explosives secreted within his shoes.
4. This is defined as a celestial body orbiting a star or a burned-out star. It has enough mass to have its own gravity around it (but not massive enough to initiate thermonuclear fusion) and has cleared out its area of comets and the like. What is it?

Answer: Planet

In 2006, the International Astronomical Union came out with these rules for what is and isn't a planet, which left poor Pluto out in the cold (and it IS cold out there in the Kuiper belt). Pluto was reclassified as a 'dwarf planet'. There are eight 'real' planets left in the Solar system (that we know about), divided into 'gas giant' (Saturn, Jupiter, Uranus, Neptune) and 'terrestrial' (Mercury, Venus, Earth, Mars) classes.
5. Who is the Disney fish that splashed onto the screen in 2003 in a movie with his name in the title?

Answer: Nemo

"Finding Nemo" was Pixar's fifth feature film (after the two "Toy Story" movies, "A Bug's Life" and "Monsters, Inc."), and it was the most profitable of its time. The film about the lost little clownfish has made over $800 million worldwide, and is one of the best-selling DVDs ever.
6. Which of these songs appears in the musical "West Side Story"?

Answer: America

"Luck Be a Lady" was in "Guys and Dolls", "Take Me or Leave Me" was in "Rent", and "Summer Nights" comes from "Grease". "America" is sung by Anita and Rosalia in "West Side Story" (Anita and Bernardo in the movie), with the two singers alternately praising and damning Puerto Rico vis-a-vis America--and it's a hopping dance number!
7. Who is Harry's best friend in the "Harry Potter" series?

Answer: Ron

Ron Weasley is one of the great sidekicks in children's literary history--he is steadfast, brave and likable, and he saves Harry's bacon several times. In the later books, he and Hermione Granger (Harry's other great friend) become an item.
8. Which of these is an onomatopoeic word?

Answer: Crunch

Onomatopoeia refers to words that sound like the things they reference--animal noises, for instance ('meow', 'cuckoo', 'roar') or words like 'snap' and 'click'. 'Crunch' definitely sounds crunchy.
9. If you're on stage, and your act is bombing, you're in danger of getting something. What would it be?

Answer: Hook

"Getting the hook" is an old vaudeville saying, meaning 'to get dragged off the stage'. In those days (generally from the 1880s to the 1930s), there actually WAS a hook that people offstage (and thus invisible) would use to catch and remove the performer who was stinking up the joint.
10. All right, we're at the end of our voyage--what word goes with all nine of your answers?

Answer: captain

All the answers are famous Captains. Captain KANGAROO was a children's television show host (Bob Keeshan was his real name). Captain MORGAN is a brand of rum featuring the eponymous pirate. Captain UNDERPANTS is a superhero in a series of kids' books by Dav Pilkey. Captain PLANET (and his Planeteers) were cartoon character heroes who saved the environment on a weekly basis. Captain NEMO was the skipper of Verne's Nautilus, in "20,000 Leagues Under the Sea". Captain AMERICA is a superhero in Marvel Comics. Captain RON was a movie starring Kurt Russell. Captain CRUNCH is a seriously tasty breakfast cereal. Finally, Captain HOOK is Peter Pan's nemesis in the book, play, and movies.
