CB By Series Trivia Questions

1. Who won the singles tennis championship in Roland Garros (Paris) in 1989? It was his only grand slam victory in the singles category.

From Quiz
JanIq's Fifth Common Bond Quiz

Answer: Michael Chang

Michael Chang was born in the USA in 1972. His professional career in tennis started in 1987 and stretched until 2003. In 1989 he competed in Paris at the French Open, at the tender age of 17. After three easy victories (one over Pete Sampras), Chang faced in the fourth round the Czech Ivan Lendl, a terrific serve and volley player. In his most memorable match, Chang defeated Lendl in five sets, although experiencing muscle cramps from the third set onwards. A week later, Chang defeated the Swedish Stefan Edberg also in five sets and won the Grand Slam tournament. All in all, Chang played four Grand Slam finals, but won only his first final. At that time, he was the youngest player ever to win a Grand Slam tournament. Chang also was instrumental in securing the Davis Cup victory for the USA in 1990. Lendl (born 1960) won the Australian Open twice, the French Open thrice and the US Open thrice. Becker (born 1967) won the Australian Open twice, Wimbledon thrice and the US Open once. Edberg (born 1966) won the Australian Open twice, Wimbledon twice and the US Open twice.

2. Gadolinium, the Black Eye Galaxy, and a chessboard are all connected by which number?

From Quiz Can You Guess the Common Bond? #3

Answer: 64

Gadolinium is a lanthanide element with atomic number 64. A silvery metal, it has use in the field of magnetic resonance imaging, where it is used to help produce clearer images. Discovered in 1779, the Black Eye Galaxy has the Messier number 64 and is found in the Coma Berenices constellation, around 24 million light years away from Earth. A chessboard typically has 64 squares, arranged in an 8x8 grid and alternately coloured black and white. Players arrange their sixteen pieces on the two rows closest to them, with the queen sitting on the square bearing her colour.

3. According to a famous novel title, who "Came in From the Cold"?

From Quiz Another Common Bond by JanIQ

Answer: The Spy

John Le Carré (pen name of David John Moore Cornwell) published "The Spy Who Came in From the Cold" in 1963 and won the Edgar Award for best novel with it. The story is about a British spy who pretends to defect to East Germany, and there spreads the rumour that the chief of the East German Stasi is in fact a British double-agent. Father Brown is an amateur sleuth created by G.K. Chesterton. He appeared only in some short stories, not in a full novel. Samuel Colt invented the six-shooter named after him. Adam Opel founded a factory in Germany in 1862. Initially his firm produced sewing machines, but after Adam's death his sons changed to automobile manufacturing.

4. The Rijksmuseum is a famous museum and art gallery located in which European city?

From Quiz Dizart's 5th Common Bond

Answer: Amsterdam

5. The War of the Roses consisted of a series of wars fought between two dynasties, Lancaster and York, for the throne of England. Who helped start off the conflict by challenging Henry VI's right to the crown?

From Quiz Zorba's Common Bond # 6

Answer: Richard, Duke of York

Richard Plantagenet, the third Duke of York, was the great-grandson of King Edward III. The then ruling king, Henry VI, frequently had bouts of insanity. When he was thus incapacitated, the Duke, better known as Richard of York, took over the reins of the country as the Lord Protector. Richard died in battle a few weeks after he was promised that he would inherit the throne after Henry VI's death.

6. Which Italian painter created the triptych "The Battle of San Romano" in the 1450s?

From Quiz Animals I've Heard Of

Answer: Paolo Uccello

Only one of these painters was active in the given decade. It was Paolo Uccello (1397-1475) who left us the aforesaid triptych, which shows us the chaos reigning a battlefield. Uccello was born in Siena and built a career in Florence. He completed several frescoes in the Green Cloister of the Santa Maria Novella, as well as the equestrian portrait of Sir John Hawkwood that still decorates the Duomo. The "Battle of San Romano" is divided over three different museums: the National Gallery in London ("Niccolo da Tolentino Leads the Florentine Troops"), the Uffizi in Florence ("Bernardino della Ciarda Thrown Off His Horse") and the Louvre in Paris ("Micheletto da Cotignola Engages in Battle"). Ugolino di Nerio was an earlier Italian Renaissance painter. He started his career in Siena in 1317 and died there in 1349. The bulk of his production are biblical tableaus. Kitagawa Utamaro (1753-1806) was a Japanese woodblock printer who left us mostly images from the leisure sector. Maurice Utrillo (1883-1953) was a French painter, specialising in city landscapes.

7. The motel chain Motel 6 was founded in the year 1960, and has since become the largest motel chain spreading across the United States and Canada. Do you know which city and state Motel 6 was born in?

From Quiz Come Crack the Case of the Common Bond

Answer: Santa Barbara, California

In case you ever wondered how it got its name, Motel 6 originally only charged $6 per night for a room, and even though the room fees have obviously increased over the years, they are still one of the lowest priced motel chains around. Not only is that a good reason to stay at one the next time you are traveling, but if you are traveling with a pet, you'll be happy to know that Motel 6 is typically pet friendly.

8. "An Inspector Calls" is a famous play written in 1946 by which English dramatist?

From Quiz Dizart's 4th Common Bond

Answer: J. B. Priestley

9. What long-running syndicated comic strip's action takes place mainly in the fifth century?

From Quiz Vera's Common Bond #3

Answer: Prince Valiant

Hal Foster created "Prince Valiant in the Days of King Arthur" in 1937. It is a long-form comic which tells the adventures of a Danish prince who is a contemporary of King Arthur and his knights. Distributed by King Features Syndicate, the strip is seen in about 300 U.S. newspapers. While taking place in the 400s, the author took some creative liberties, such as using weapons that did not exist then.

10. Which French Minister created in 1981 the "fête de la Musique", a yearly festival for amateur musicians? If this question is too hard, ask Brooke.
