Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In June of 2013, FIFA president Sepp Blatter was given the key to the city of Port Louis, the capital of what small island nation?

Answer: Mauritius

Blatter was in Mauritius at the time for the 63st FIFA Congress meeting. Born in Switzerland, Blatter was elected to the presidency of FIFA in 1998. During his tenure, Blatter instituted that no FIFA-sanctioned match could be played above 3000 feet, and removed the ability for World Cup champions to automatically qualify for the next one. Blatter was the centre of controversy for awarding the 2022 World Cup to Qatar, and allegations of financial corruption.
2. Granted the freedom to the city of Portsmouth in 2008, Harry Redknapp was greeted with boos as he accepted the award. What is Redknapp's occupation?

Answer: Football manager

Redknapp had just led Portsmouth FC to the FA Cup, with a finals win over Cardiff City when he received the freedom to the city of Portsmouth. Just three days prior to the presentation though Redknapp had signed on with Tottenham as their new manager, which angered most of the fans in attendance at the ceremony. Redknapp did admit during his speech that "My timing has never been very good and, this week, it could never have been worse."
3. Irish rock band U2 was granted the freedom to the city in which they formed in. What city is it?

Answer: Dublin

Dublin also acts as the birthplace of both lead singer Bono and drummer Larry Mullen Jr. The band formed in 1976 at the Mount Temple Comprehensive School in Dublin and have sold over 150 million records since. The band was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2005, and held the most-attended and highest grossing concert tour in music history with their 360° Tour from 2009-2011.

They received the Freedom of Dublin from Lord Mayor Mary Freehill.
4. Charles Dickens was granted the Freedom to Edinburgh in 1841. At that time, Dickens had only published which of these novels?

Answer: Oliver Twist

"Oliver Twist" was the second novel published by Dickens when it was released in 1839. "David Copperfield" (1850), "A Tale of Two Cities" (1859), and "Great Expectations" (1861) were all yet to be released when he was granted the freedom to Edinburgh.

Born in Edinburgh, Dickens was living in London when he wrote "Oliver Twist", but returned in 1841 to attend a banquet. During his brief stay he was granted the freedom to Edinburgh. Oddly enough, Dickens never mentioned Edinburgh in any of his works.
5. Which American singer sold the key to Adelaide she was presented with in 1990 on eBay in 2012 for close to $100,000 US?

Answer: Cher

Cher was in Adelaide for the 1990 Australian Grand Prix when she was given the key to the city. However the key ended up on eBay in April of 2012, and the winning bid landed at US $95,900 (AU $92,030). Cher claimed that she didn't mean to post the key for sale, and this was a mistake by her office.

The move angered Adelaidians, including former mayor Steve Condolous, who presented Cher with the key said "If she didn't want to keep [the key], she should have returned it back to the city.".
6. Detroit has had a peculiar history when it comes to awarding keys to the city. Which one of these below has NOT been awarded it?

Answer: Fred Flintstone

Hussein donated hundreds of thousands of dollars to a local Detroit church, for which he was awarded the key to Detroit in 1980, 21 years before he became an enemy of the state. Each year at the conclusion of the city's Thanksgiving Day Parade, Santa Claus is presented with the key to Detroit. And finally, Elmo received the Key to Detroit in January 2010.
7. The NFL's Buffalo Bills made a big splash in the 2009 off-season, signing star receiver Terrell Owens to a contract. He was awarded the key to Buffalo, but it came on two conditions; that he would catch 10 touchdowns in the upcoming season, and lead the Bills into the postseason? Did Owens follow through on the terms?

Answer: No

Despite playing all 16 games, Owens only caught five touchdowns, and the Bills struggled to a 6-10 record. Owens only played that one season with the Bills, signing with the Cincinnati Bengals in the next spring. Although he did not meet the terms of the deal, he did not return the key to Buffalo.
8. After capturing their fourth championship in franchise history, the Rochester Knighthawks were awarded the keys to Rochester, New York. What league do they play in?

Answer: National Lacrosse League

The team was founded in 1995 and was a charter member of the NLL in 1998. The Knighthawks won the final Major Indoor Lacrosse League title in 1997, along with NLL Champions Cup victories in 2007, and three consecutive from 2011-2014. After their second cup in a row, they were awarded the keys to Rochester from Mayor Thomas S. Richards.
9. Canadian Prime Minister R.B. Bennett was awarded the keys to Saint John, New Brunswick while sitting in office. Bennett was Prime Minister through which difficult time?

Answer: Great Depression

Bennett served as Prime Minister from 1930-1935 and had little success alleviating the financial crisis in Canada. Bennett created relief camps across the country, where unemployed men could work for twenty cents a day. The living conditions led many in these camps to begin a protest walk to Ottawa that Bennett ordered stopped in Regina.

The protesters confronted policemen leading to a riot that killed two and injured dozens. After leaving the office, Bennett moved to England, where he lived for the remainder of his life.
10. After the SARS virus outbreak in 2003, the city of Toronto awarded the key to the city to which red-dirt Canadian province as a whole?

Answer: Prince Edward Island

To help recover the struggling Toronto tourism economy after the outbreak, PEI sent 20,000 pounds of mussels, 125,000 potatoes, 12,000 oysters to local restaurants. Along with the key to the city in return, mayor Mel Lastman sent a cheque for $50,000 to PEI to help replace trees lost in Hurricane Juan the same year.
