Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which chalk headland, near the Seven Sisters, is a notorious suicide spot in UK?

Answer: Beachy Head

Beachy Head is near Eastbourne in East Sussex and at 162 metres above sea level is the highest chalk sea cliff in Great Britain. The number of suicide attempts each year led to the formation of The Beachy Head Chaplaincy Team who patrol the area regularly to locate and try to stop potential jumpers.

They are assisted by staff at the pub, also called The Beachy Head, and local taxi drivers who will inform them if they observe potential jumpers. In 2006, the Coastguard Rescue Service said the reduction in suicides at Beachy Head was directly attributable to the Chaplaincy Team and their network.
2. Winners of the Mercury Music Prize in 2008, for which band is Guy Garvey the lead vocalist?

Answer: Elbow

The album "The Seldom Seen Kid" was the Mercury Music Prize winner and in 2009, the band also won an Ivor Novello award for Best Song, with the track "One Day Like This" from the album. "One Day Like This" was used by BBC during highlights of the 2008 Olympics and the band performed it live at the 2012 Olympics closing ceremonies. Also in 2009, the band won the Ivor Novello award for Best Contemporary Song with "Grounds For Divorce" from the same album, a track which has also featured in TV shows "Top Gear" and "House M.D." as well as several video games.
3. Which nickname did Australian model Elle Macpherson acquire?

Answer: The Body

The nickname was started by "Time" magazine after Macpherson's many appearances on the cover of the "Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Issue" and as a smart businesswoman she wasted no time taking advantage of it, producing a line of beauty products called The Body.

She has also dabbled in acting, appearing as the girlfriend of Bruce Wayne (George Clooney) in 1997s "Batman and Robin" and the girlfriend of Joey Tribbiani (Matt LeBlanc) in five episodes of "Friends" in 1999, the same year that she became the first model to appear on legal tender when Antigua and Barbuda issued postage stamps featuring her face.
4. Which UK politician and leader of the Labour Party 1980-83 became famous for wearing a donkey jacket?

Answer: Michael Foot

A donkey jacket is a thick black woollen coat with two large pockets, a poachers pocket inside and leather reinforcements along the back and shoulders, ideal for manual outdoor work and takes its name from the donkey engines used by Irish navvies on the construction of the Manchester Ship Canal. Foot was criticised for wearing one and accused of being disrespectful when he wore one to the Remembrance Day parade in 1981, but according to his wife, he was actually wearing, "a short, blue-green overcoat bought at considerable expense from Harrods."
5. Which infamous bootlegger of the prohibition era is popularly believed to have been murdered by the Albany police department?

Answer: Legs Diamond

Jack "Legs" Diamond, also known as Gentleman Jim, was no gentleman when it came to his choice of work, as he and his gang would frequently hijack the trucks carrying illegal alcohol of other bootleggers. Exploits such as this led to four attempts on his life in six years, all of which he survived.

After eventually being forced out of New York by rival gangs, he set up in Albany, where he met his death on December 18 1931 from three bullets in the back of the head. Officially, the identity of the assassins is unknown, and although it could have been members of a rival gang, it is widely believed that it was the local police department, determined to prevent organized crime in their city.
6. Which album by Dire Straits contained the tracks "Money For Nothing" and "Walk of Life"?

Answer: Brothers In Arms

As well as the two tracks in the question, the album also contained "So Far Away" and "Your Latest Trick" and the title track, all of which were released as singles and all of which found chart success in some corner of the globe. The album is one of the best selling ever with over 30 million copies sold and 20 years after its 1986 release won a Grammy award for "Best Surround Sound Album".
7. Sufferers of prosopagnosia have an inability to recognise what?

Answer: Faces

The word prosopagnosia is made up of a combination of the Greek for "face" and "lack of knowledge" and is also called face blindness. The severity can be quite acute, with some sufferers unable to even recognise their own faces, and inability to recognise gender or age is quite common among sufferers. It is often a condition one is born with, although it can also be a result of a head injury or stroke. Sufferers will often develop clever techniques to mask their issue such as recognising people through their voice or the way in which they walk, and find that following movie plots can be very difficult if not impossible.

Thanks to ninds.nih.gov for making the technical jargon so accessible and pointing me in the right direction.
8. Played in movies by Geoffrey Keen in 1950 and Michael Halsey in 1990, as well as appearing in video game "Assassin's Creed IV: Black Flag", who was Blackbeard's infamous second in command?

Answer: Israel Hands

Almost nothing is known of the early life of Hands, who was appointed captain of the "Adventure" when she was captured by Blackbeard. Together they intimidated many ships in the area of Vera Cruz, Mexico, before Blackbeard decided they should give up piracy and they retired to Ocracoke Island, off the shore of North Carolina.

However, being law abiding citizens didn't last long and they started doing quick piracy raids on passing ships before Blackbeard was captured and beheaded by the Royal Navy. Similar to his early life, little is known of Hands' later life following Blackbeard's death. Depending on whose account you believe, he died in the battle, he was pardoned for testifying against his fellow pirates or he ended up a penniless beggar in London.
9. "The kist and its contents will be sold for a guinea and not a bawbee less", according to the auctioneer in Bram Stoker's novel "The Mystery Of The Sea". What is a kist?

Answer: Chest

The kist is bought by Archibald in the novel and the auctioneer follows with "The kist is yours, good master; and that concludes the roup." The book is set in Aberdeenshire, Scotland, hence the colloquial language, such as kist. A bawbee was a Scottish coin worth threepence and a roup is an auction. Stoker is best known of course for writing "Dracula".
10. Who was the striped-pyjama-wearing keyboard player with the Boomtown Rats?

Answer: Johnnie Fingers

Fingers, real name John Moylett, co-founded the Boomtown Rats with Bob Geldof in 1975. When the Rats disbanded in 1986, he formed the band Gung Ho with drummer Simon Crowe, and later formed Greengate with Toshiaki Shibata, who released the album "Metaphysical Vibration" which probably isn't the best showcase of Irish/Japanese music.
