Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which American actress received an Oscar nomination for her role as Rayette Dipesto in the 1970 film "Five Easy Pieces"?

Answer: Karen Black

Karen Black's career began in 1959 and spanned five decades. Her brilliant portrayal of the trusting and rather dim-witted Rayette earned her a nomination for Best Supporting Actress. Other credits include roles in "Easy Rider", "The Great Gatsby" and numerous television shows.

The talented Ms. Black died on August 8, 2013 after a three year battle with cancer.
2. Sirius Black is a fictional character from which young adult book series?

Answer: Harry Potter

Sirius Black is first introduced in the third book of the series, "Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban". Although initially described as a villain, it's later revealed that Harry's godfather was the victim of a terrible miscarriage of justice. With the help of Harry and Hermione, Sirius manages to escape a horrible fate and becomes a beloved mentor and friend to his godson.
3. The small US mountain range known as the Black Hills is located primarily in what state?

Answer: South Dakota

The Black Hills region is rich in history and is home to several tourist attractions, including Mount Rushmore National Memorial. The town of Sturgis began hosting an annual motorcycle rally in 1938, and the event has become one of the largest of its kind in the world.
4. The term "Black Friday" refers to what day on the US calendar?

Answer: The day after Thanksgiving

The day after Thanksgiving marks the beginning of the Christmas shopping season and is traditionally the busiest day of the year for many retail stores. (The term refers to increased sales for merchants, thereby putting them "in the black".)

The stock market crash of 1929 is sometimes referred to as "Black Tuesday" and the Friday before Easter is "Good Friday". The Winter Solstice marks the day of the year with the shortest period of sunlight, but the date varies depending on hemisphere.
5. The American rock band Ram Jam had a "one hit wonder" in 1977 with what song?

Answer: Black Betty

Despite controversy over what many perceived to be racially offensive lyrics, the song did well on both the US and the UK charts.

"Black Dog" and "Back in Black" were recorded by Led Zeppelin and AC/DC, respectively. "Blackbird" was a Beatles recording and has been covered by Crosby, Stills & Nash, Sarah McLachlan, and several others.
6. The expression "blacklist" means to deny a person a certain privilege, such as employment or admission to social clubs. The term was widely used during the 1940s and '50s, when Senator Joe McCarthy attempted to prevent employment for a number of Hollywood celebrities by accusing them of what activity?

Answer: Having ties to Communism

The term has actually been used for hundreds of years but it was McCarthy's Hollywood blacklist that made headlines after the close of World War II. As a result of their refusal to testify in a series of Congressional hearings investigating Communist activity, several prominent actors and writers were barred (blacklisted) from employment.

Blacklisting has also been used to deny privileges such as credit, entrance to organizations, or medical treatment based on past behavior, race, religion or inability to pay for services.
7. The widow of US Navy Intelligence Officer Charles Alden Black became famous at a young age because of her accomplishment in what area?

Answer: Child film star

Shirley Temple made her screen debut in 1932 when she was just three years old. Her career included numerous films and television appearances.

She married Charles Black at the age of 22 and became involved in public service during the 1960s. She served as US Ambassador to both Ghana and Czechoslovakia and on various boards under several US presidents.

Shirley Temple Black died on February 10, 2014. She was 85 years old.
8. What is the definition of the term "black market"?

Answer: An economy that deals in illegal or counterfeit goods

The term can be used to describe any illegal sale, from counterfeit handbags to smuggling goods such as cigarettes from one state to another to avoid paying higher tax rates. Black markets are often created during war or as a direct result of a law, as in the case of liquor sales during Prohibition.

The "pirating" (unauthorized copying) of movies and music CDs is an example of a black market created by the rise of technology.
9. Clint Black is best-known in the music field as what?

Answer: A country and western singer
