Answer: Black Sabbath

The English rock band known as Black Sabbath was formed in 1968 by lead singer Ozzy Osbourne. Tony Iommi, Geezaer Butler and Bill Ward were the other original members of the band. With their release of "Paranoid" in 1970, they were instrumental in defining the music genre we know as heavy metal.
2. Name the author of the book "Black Hawk Down: A Story of Modern War".

Answer: Mark Bowden

In 1999, Mark Bowden's book "Black Hawk Down" was released. This book was adapted into a film, also titled "Black Hawk Down", in 2001, which was directed by Ridley Scott. The story focuses on the 1993 real-life attempt of the U.S.A. to capture Mohamed Farrah Aidid, a Somali warlord. In Mogadishu, a very intense battle took place between the American forces and the local Somali militia and its citizens. A UH-60 Black Hawk helicopter was downed and its crew was captured. The book and the movie depict the events which took place during the rescue attempt of the helicopter's crew.

Mark Bowden, a journalist, wrote his accounts of this battle in a narrative style which led to organizing the writings into a fiction novel, based on the actual events. Mark Bowden was born on the July 17, 1951 in St. Louis, Missouri, U.S.A. He studied at Loyola College in Maryland, U.S.A. and graduated in 1973. From 1979-2003 Bowden worked as a staff writer for "The Philadelphia Inquirer", winning many awards. Answer: Black or White

These lyrics are part of the Michael Jackson song "Black or White", which was released in 1991 on the "Dangerous" album. The song "Black or White" was a single from the album. Bill Bottrell performed along with Slash in the introductory riff. Bill Bottrell composed the rap lyrics, while Michael Jackson wrote the rest of the lyrics, composed and arranged the song.
4. Elizabeth Short was murdered in LA in January 1947. By which name was she better known?

Answer: Black Dahlia

Elizabeth Short was born on July 29, 1924 and died on January 15, 1947. She was brutally murdered, mutilated, and her body was severed and left in Leimert Park, Los Angeles, California, U.S.A.

Miss Short was given the nickname Black Dahlia only after she was murdered. There is controversy as to who created the nickname. The murder investigation involved hundreds of police officers. There were hundreds of suspects with nearly sixty people confessing to the crime. However there was no evidence to link anyone to this terrible murder. The case was never solved.
5. What does a black belt frequently represent in the field of martial arts?

Answer: Expert

The actual term "black belt" is most widely known as the description of an expert in martial arts. It is commonly accepted as the highest belt color, denoting a high degree of martial arts competence, in the Western world. The term is not an ancient custom at all, but dates more from the late 19th century.

The ranks and colors of various martial arts belts are not the same between different arts, styles and even within the same organizations. Some arts view the black belt as easy to get, while others see it as one of the hardest to achieve. In fact, some schools use embroidered bars on a black belt to show different levels achieved in black belt rankings.
6. What does a solid black flag signify in Formula One racing?

Answer: Immediate disqualification

In Formula One racing, the black flag means that the driver is immediately disqualified. In car racing, many colored flags are used to alert drivers to different situations. In most other types of racing, the solid black flag summons a driver to go to the pits for disobeying rules or because their vehicle has a dangerous mechanical problem, such as a loose hood or a communications radio not working.

Black flags can also be waved from all of the observation posts to order all of the drivers to clear the race track after the starter had first waved the red flag, most often due to a serious accident on the track.
7. Who was known as the "Man in Black"?

Answer: Johnny Cash

Johnny Cash was born on February 26, 1932 and died on September 12, 2003. His occupation was singer-songwriter, musician and actor. He began his musical career in 1955 and continued until his death in 2003. By the early 1970s, Cash became known as "The Man in Black" because he regularly performed dressed only in black, which was a complete contrast to most other major country singers acts during this era. The song "Man in Black" was then written by Cash, in 1971, to help explain why he wore black. The lyrics are as follows:

"I wear the black for the poor and the beaten down,
Livin' in the hopeless, hungry side of town,
I wear it for the prisoner who has long paid for his crime,
But is there because he's a victim of the times.

I wear the black for those who never read,
Or listened to the words that Jesus said,
About the road to happiness through love and charity,
Why, you'd think He's talking straight to you and me."
8. Edward Teach, better known as Blackbeard the Pirate, was notorious along the Caribbean Sea and the western Atlantic Ocean during the early 18th century. What is the name of his best-known flagship?

Answer: Queen Anne's Revenge

"Queen Anne's Revenge" was the flagship used by Blackbeard for less than a year, but was an effective ship during the time he used it. The "Queen Anne's Revenge" is believed to have gone aground in Beaufort Inlet, North Carolina in 1718. In late 1996, remains of what is believed to be the "Queen Anne's Revenge" were found in a marine recovery operation contracted to "Intersal" by the state of North Carolina.

The original name of the "Queen Anne's Revenge" was "Concord", built in 1710 by Britain. This ship was captured by the French and modified and renamed "La Concorde de Nantes". In November 1717, near Martinique, Captain Benjamin Hornigold captured the ship and gave it to Edward Teach (Blackbeard). After converting the ship into his own, Blackbeard attacked the British, Dutch and Portuguese ships along his voyages from the western coast of Africa all the way to the Caribbean.
9. Are the black plague (or Black Death) and the bubonic plague the same type of plague?

Answer: Yes

The bubonic plague is a manifestation of a bacterial disease caused by the Gram-negative bacterium called Yersinia pestis (once called Pasteurella pestis). This bacterium belongs to the family Enterobacteriaceae. It is an infection that enters through the skin and travels through all of the lymphatics, killing about half of all infected persons within three to seven days, if left untreated.

The Black Death, which swept through Europe in the 1340s, was also a bubonic plague. It was responsible for the death of tens of millions of people.
10. Who was the original singer of the song "Black is Black"?

Answer: Los Bravos

In 1966, Los Bravos released the song "Black is Black" composed by Tony Hayes and Steve Wadey. The song reached number two on the UK charts and reached number four in the USA. The band Los Bravos was formed in 1965 as a Spanish beat group based in Madrid, Spain. Mike Kogel (born April 25, 1945 in Berlin) was the lead singer of the group. Other group members included Antonio Martinez, Manuel Fernandez, Miguel Vicens Danus and Pablo Gomez. Other songs which released as singles were "I Don't Care" (1966) and "Bring a Little Lovin'" (1968).
