Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What US state is 7th in size?

Answer: nevada

This is apropos, as Nevada has statewide legalized gambling. And 7 is considered a lucky number by many.

The states larger than Nevada are (in order): Alaska, Texas, California, Montana, New Mexico, and Arizona. Colorado is the 8th largest, just smaller than Nevada.
2. Katherine Hepburn was nominated for an Academy Award twelve times for "Best Actress in a Leading Role", winning 4 of those times. Which movie was the seventh for which she was nominated but did not win?

Answer: "Suddenly, Last Summer" (1959)

"The Rainmaker" was her 7th nomination, but only the 6th she didn't win. "Guess Who's Coming to Dinner" was her 10th nomination and her 2nd win. "Long Day's Journey Into Night" was her 9th nomination, but her 8th she didn't win.

Interestingly, she won her first nomination for "Morning Glory" (1933), then had 8 nominations over the next 30 years without winning. She then had 3 more nominations, winning each of those for "Guess Who's Coming To Dinner", "The Lion in Winter", and "On Golden Pond".
3. The sixth longest river in the world is the _____ ?

Answer: Yellow River (China)

The Yellow River (or Huang He) is 2900 miles (4667 km) long. It drains an area of China of approximately three-quarters of a million square kilometers.

The name describes the nearly constant ochre-yellow color of the muddy water in the lower course of the river. The Chinese expression "when the Yellow River flows clear" is akin to the English expression "when hell freezes over."

FYI, the Amazon is the 2nd longest (3969 miles), the Mackenzie - Peace - Finlay is 11th (2635 miles), and the mighty Colorado (which carved The Grand Canyon) is 52nd, at only 1450 miles.
4. A one followed by 7 zeros is called (US designation):

Answer: Ten Million

In number form: 10,000,000.
5. True/False: In Washington, DC, you only need to dial seven numbers to make a local phone call.

Answer: False

At one time, you could call between Washington, DC and the nearest neighborhoods in Virginia and Maryland without even an area code. But when additional phone numbers were needed due to the advent of fax machines, modems, and cell phones, the phone systems were reprogrammed to require an area code (without a prefix of "1") to complete a call, even one that was within the same area code.

Now, the DC area is served by area codes 202 (DC), 703 and 571 (Virginia), and 301 and 240 (Maryland).
6. After Pluto's demotion from planet to dwarf planet in 2006, which planet is now the seventh from the Sun?

Answer: Uranus

Trick question: Uranus was always the 7th planet. However, in the late 20th century, Pluto was the 8th closest planet to the Sun when its eccentric orbit brought it closer than Neptune. It has gone back outside of Neptune's orbit, as well as been demoted to "dwarf planet".
7. The number 7 in sign language (USA) is made by touching which finger to the thumb and holding the other fingers out?

Answer: Ring

Pinkie: 6; Ring: 7; Middle: 8; and Index 9. For 3, the thumb, index, and middle finger are all held out, and the other two down. Using index, middle, and ring would look like 6 or W.
8. Vinyl records that were 7 inches in diameter were played at what speed?

Answer: 45 RPM

All were valid speeds for vinyl records. The 7", 45 RPM record was mainly used for single song recordings. Read the complex history of records and their evolution on The Straight Dope (http://www.straightdope.com/classics/a1_258b.html).
9. Which of the following is not one of The Seven Deadly Sins?

Answer: cowardice

The heptad was fixed by Thomas Aquinas in the 13th century.
The full list is: pride, envy, anger, sloth (laziness), avarice (greed), gluttony, and lust.
10. Who was the seventh actor to portray The Doctor in the BBC series "Dr. Who" (1987-1989)?

Answer: Sylvester McCoy

He was the seventh and last actor in the first run of the TV series to play the Time Lord.

There was TV movie in 1996 where he appeared as the Doctor at the beginning. The Doctor died and regenerated, with the actor Paul McGann playing this 8th incarnation.

McGann didn't make any TV episodes of "Doctor Who", but he provided the Doctor's voice in 70 audio dramas, as well as appearing in the 2013 mini-episode "The Night of the Doctor", where he died and regenerated as War Doctor, who didn't go by the name "Doctor" because he'd dedicated himself to being a warrior in the ongoing Time War with the Daleks.
