Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In the movie version of "The Wizard of Oz," which character, played by Judy Garland, wore the Wicked Witch of the East's magical ruby slippers?

Answer: Dorothy Gale

In the book, "The Magical Wizard of Oz by L. Frank Baum", the magical slippers are silver. For the movie, the change to ruby slippers (created by Gilbert Adrian who was MGM Studio's chief costume designer) was made to give the shoes a more dramatic effect, considering they were essential to the storyline.

When the movie went from black and white to color, the sequined, sparkling, bright red shoes did make quite an impression!
2. In the mid-1980s, Soleil Moon Frye played which character famous for wearing mismatched Chuck Taylor sneakers?

Answer: Punky Brewster

In the TV series, Punky Brewster is a young girl who escapes from an orphanage and is eventually adopted by a widower played by George Gaynes. Actress Soleil Moon Frye wore oddball outfits which became popular as the "Punky look" in children's fashions.

The outfits were comprised of lots of layers, mismatched clothing, and really bright colors. "Punky Brewster" was so popular, it was also a Saturday morning cartoon in the 80s.
3. What color are the "Pope's Burial Shoes"?

Answer: Red

The Pope, being the successor of the martyred St. Peter, wears the red shoes to symbolize martyrdom. The color is also worn as a symbol for burning love, and the fire of the Spirit.
4. Which fairy tale princess is well known for losing just one of her one-of-a-kind glass slippers?

Answer: Cinderella

In most versions of Cinderella, when the Fairy Godmother's magic spell is broken at midnight, all of the "gifts" return to their original form except for the glass slippers; one remains with the Prince and the other with Cinderella. There is usually no explanation for this idiosyncrasy.

However, in a few less common versions, Cinderella's slippers are a "gift" from her Fairy Godmother and are not part of the magic spell.
5. Which NBA player, who starred in the movie "Kazaam" in 1996, reputedly wears size 23 sneakers?

Answer: Shaquille O'Neal

Robin Lopez reportedly wears a size 20, while Channing Frye and Amar'e Stoudemire apparently both wear size 17. Shaquille O'Neal is 7'1" and weighs around 325 lbs., which explains the shoe size. Translated to inches, his shoe is a little over 15" long.
6. Which one of Fred Astaire's female dancing partners is famous for doing "everything that Fred Astaire did, but backwards and in high heels"?

Answer: Ginger Rogers

The quote referred to in my question is said to have originated in a 1982 Frank and Ernest cartoon as: "Sure he was great, but don't forget that Ginger Rogers did everything he did, backwards... and in high heels." Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers made a total of ten movies together between 1933 and 1949.

As dancing partners, their style was a mix of ballroom, tap, soft shoe, and sometimes even ballet and/or vaudeville.
7. Fred Gwynne, who played Herman Munster in the 1964 TV series "The Munsters", was quite tall at 6'5". In order to make his character appear even taller, what unusual footwear was Fred required to wear?

Answer: Enormous five inch platform boots

The Munsters TV series was made in 1964 and could have been filmed in color, but there would have been an added cost of $10,000.00 per episode. The studio was not willing to pay that much for color.
8. In the 2004 movie "Napoleon Dynamite", what kind of eccentric footwear is Napoleon wearing while out "to prove he's got nothing to prove"?

Answer: His comfortable Moon Boots

Moon boots first came out in the early 1970s and became quite a fashion trend. They had no designated left or right foot but they were so huge and "puffy" that it really didn't make a difference which foot you put them on. Believe it or not, they are still popular as apres-ski boots.
9. Nancy Sinatra demonstrated a particular kind of footwear while singing her 1966 signature hit "These Boots are Made for Walking". What kind of boots was she wearing?

Answer: White high-heeled "go-go" boots

Prior to go-go boots, women wore boots as needed for bad weather. Boots were not intended to be fashionable. The go-go boot was the trend which brought about the idea that boots could be part of an outfit.
10. In the unforgettable 1965 TV series "Get Smart", what was peculiar about Agent Maxwell Smart's shoes?

Answer: His right shoe was a "shoe phone" with an unlisted number.

Other spies of his time were extremely sophisticated, but Maxwell Smart played by Don Adams was a hilarious klutz. Not only was one shoe a "shoe phone", but both shoes contained various necessary "spy" items adapted for each episode. The idea for the shoe phone came from Mel Brooks, one of the writers on the show.
