Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. My travels have led me to the following places. Where do I need to go next? Great Pyramid of Giza, Hanging Gardens of Babylon, Statue of Zeus at Olympia, Temple of Artemis at Ephesus, Mausoleum at Halicarnassus, Colossus of Rhodes, and ___.

Answer: Lighthouse of Alexandria

These are the seven wonder of the ancient world as described by Heroditus. The Lighthouse of Alexandria was the first of its kind. It was huge and one of the first to use reflected light to guide ships to one of Alexandria's unique double harbors (separated by the "Island of the Pharaohs").

The Great Pyramid of Giza is the only remaining wonder left standing. Surely, if the Great Wall of China was well-known it would have made the list. Other lists have been made in the same spirit as the seven wonders of the ancient world and are recognized as "wonders".
2. I've decided to reflect on my life while traveling. I realize that I demonstrate the following conditions necessary to life, but what is another condition living things display? Homeostasis, organization, metabolism, growth, adaptation, reproduction, and ___.

Answer: Response to stimuli

According to biology, these are considered to be a guideline for something to be alive. Life is believed to have at least most of these characteristics. There are still several things that are controversial as to being defined as alive. One of them, for example, is a virus.
3. I have decided to take a horse ride to clear my mind. I know I don't want to go at the following gaits, so which gait would I go? Walk, trot, gallop, pace, ambling gait, and ___.

Answer: Canter

A canter is faster than a trot but slower than a gallop. It is a three-step gait that all horses naturally do. Ambling gaits are generally not natural to most horses.
4. I take a trip into the atmosphere and see the following layers. Which other layer did I see? Ozone layer, stratosphere, mesosphere, karman line, ionosphere, thermosphere, magnetosphere, exosphere, and ___.

Answer: Troposphere

These are all layers in the atmosphere. The troposphere is the lowest layer and the level most commonly occupied by people. It is in this layer that most of Earth's atmosphere is described using temperature, pressure and composition in an effort to predict weather patterns. Weather continues to be one of the most difficult patterns to model correctly.
5. Suddenly I was brought to the ground feeling all of the forces of nature, including which one? Strong nuclear force, weak nuclear force, electromagnetism, and ___.

Answer: Gravity

All forces known can be explained with one or a combination of the four fundamental forces. It is a constant struggle for physicists to more accurately describe these forces.
6. There will be a use for many different mechanisms along my travels. I will need to use the following machines in order to complete my journey: Lever, inclined plane, wedge, screw, wheel and axle, and ___.

Answer: Pulley

These are the six simple machines that make use of mechanical advantage. These machines were defined in the Renaissance and are generally considered to be the fundamental building blocks of all complicated machines we use today.
7. I have been able to label the organisms I've observed by describing them with the following, including which one? Kingdom, phylum, class, order, genus, species, and ___.

Answer: Family

This is the scientific notation for describing all organisms. The family would be described after order and before genus. The names are generally written in Latin and have a etymology that describes some aspect of the organism.
8. There have been many disputes along the way. The root cause of these arguments have been all of the following, including what? Lust, sloth, greed, pride, wrath, gluttony, and ___.

Answer: Envy

These are the seven deadly sins as described by the Catholic church. They are believed to be the root cause of all other sins.

Envy is essentially jealousy. It is a desire that others not have something that you want. Each sin is also paired with a demon that supposedly tempts that sin. The demon for envy is Leviathan.
9. I must have made several fallacies to be in such a predicament, including which one: Red herring, slippery slope, begging the question, post hoc, non sequitur, straw man, faulty cause, and ___.

Answer: Confirmation bias

The confirmation bias is people's tendency to associate evidence to support what they already believe. People are also less likely to believe evidence that negates what they believe. I've decided that if I made all those other fallacies, I must have made the confirmation bias as well... which is the confirmation bias! All wrong answers were fabricated.
10. While writing this, I've made none of the following sp-igures of f-eech except: Hypallage, syllogism, alliteration, malapropism, zeugma, syllepsis, tautology, hysteron proteron, acrostic, and ___.

Answer: Spoonerism

A spoonerism is a figure of speech where the first sounds of two words are interchanged. In this case I exchanged "figure of speech" to be "spigure of feech". This makes some nonsense words. It can also be made to make sense such as, "He's a smart feller" becomes "He's a fart smeller". This is often associated with slips of tongues.
